Health Consequences Of Low Energy Availability In Females And Their Underlying Physiological Mechanisms, 2023 Liberty University
Health Consequences Of Low Energy Availability In Females And Their Underlying Physiological Mechanisms, Grace Parry
Senior Honors Theses
Low energy availability (LEA) is a state in which energy intake is insufficient to support energy expenditure while maintaining energy balance, which has been shown to result in gastrointestinal distress, immunosuppression, reduced metabolic rate, menstrual dysfunction, diminished bone health, and impaired cardiovascular function in females. Alterations to the microbiome and mucosal lining may propagate gastrointestinal complaints and compromised immune function associated with LEA. The pathophysiology of LEA is otherwise largely driven by hormonal adaptations. Diminished production of thyroid hormones is known to contribute to reduced metabolic rate. Decreases in leptin and insulin and increases in ghrelin disrupt reproductive function through …

Introduction: Immune checkpoint inhibitors including PD-1 inhibitors, were initially approved for the treatment of metastatic melanoma but are now increasingly being used for different types of solid organ malignancies. Despite the important clinical benefits, they are associated with immune-related adverse events. The most critical endocrinopathy associated with PD -1 inhibitor is adrenal insufficiency (AI), which requires prompt diagnosis and management to avoid fatality.
Case presentation: We present the case of a 78-year-old woman with colon adenocarcinoma treated with Nivolumab (PD-1 inhibitor) after her pulmonary metastases progressed on chemotherapy. She presented to the hospital with progressive generalized weakness, fatigue, headache, lightheadedness, …

Drug associated cues are a common relapse trigger for individuals recovering from cocaine use disorder. Sex and ovarian hormones influence patterns of cocaine use and relapse vulnerability, with studies indicating that females show increased cue-induced craving and relapse vulnerability compared to males. In a rodent model of cocaine craving and relapse vulnerability, cue-induced cocaine seeking behavior following weeks of withdrawal from extended-access cocaine self-administration is higher in females in the estrus stage of the reproductive (estrous) cycle (Estrus Females) compared to both Males and females in all other stages (Non-Estrus Females). However, the neuronal substrates and cellular mechanisms underlying these …

Several mouse models have been developed to study polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), a leading cause of infertility in women. Treatment of mice with dihydrotestosterone (DHT) for 90-days causes ovarian and metabolic phenotypes similar to women with PCOS. We used this 90-day DHT treatment paradigm to investigate the variable incidence and heterogeneity in two inbred mouse strains, NOD/ShiLtJ and 129S1/SvlmJ. NOD mice naturally develop type 1 diabetes, and recent meta-analysis found increased androgen excess and PCOS in women with type 1 diabetes. 129S1 mice are commonly used in genetic manipulations. Both NOD and 129S1 DHT treated mice had early vaginal opening, …
