Do Physicians Contribute To Economic Growth? An Empirical Analysis, Mary Reilly 2012 University of Connecticut - Storrs

Do Physicians Contribute To Economic Growth? An Empirical Analysis, Mary Reilly

Honors Scholar Theses

Physicians may contribute to economic growth in two distinct, opposite ways. On the one hand, an efficient number of physicians may keep people healthy, which raises the productivity of laborers and allows them to return to work quickly after an illness. This type of profit-seeking behavior by physicians should raise the growth of the economy. On the other hand, too many physicians may exist in a market area, which leads to supplier-induced demand (SID). The SID may keep laborers out of work for longer periods and thereby negatively impact the growth of the economy. Moreover, the extra number of physicians …

Book Review: Dream Of Ding Village By Yan Lianke, Mike Frick 2012 Asia Catalyst

Book Review: Dream Of Ding Village By Yan Lianke, Mike Frick

The China Beat Blog Archive 2008-2012

Unsurprisingly, the Chinese government levied a “three nos” ban—no sales, no distribution, and no promotion—against Dream of Ding Village after its publication in 2005. Though the storytelling relies heavily on dream sequences, Yan takes little poetic license when exposing the depth of the state’s culpability in spreading HIV among poor, medically-naïve farmers. He is just as uncompromising when detailing how officials denied responsibility for the ensuing AIDS epidemic, even as they profited from its human tragedy. No one in Ding Village receives medical care, mental health counseling, food assistance, or a chance to hold the blood heads legally accountable. Cast …

The Impact Of A Direct Care Training Program On The Self-Efficacy Of Newly Hired Direct Care Employees At State Mental Health Facilities, Marcus Wayne Lewis 2012 University of Southern Mississippi

The Impact Of A Direct Care Training Program On The Self-Efficacy Of Newly Hired Direct Care Employees At State Mental Health Facilities, Marcus Wayne Lewis

Dissertations

Self-efficacy has been shown to be an important element in the success of individuals in a variety of different settings. This research examined the impact of a two week new employee orientation training program on the general and social self-efficacy of newly hired direct care employees at state mental health facilities. The research showed that the training program did not have a statistically significant impact on the social self-efficacy of the new employees after the training or after one month on the job. The research also showed that the two week new employee orientation program did not have a statistically …

A Consideration Of The Potential Side Effects Of Health Insurance Coverage, Melanie Jane Cozad 2012 University of Tennessee, Knoxville

A Consideration Of The Potential Side Effects Of Health Insurance Coverage, Melanie Jane Cozad

Doctoral Dissertations

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) is federal health care reform legislation that represents the most significant health insurance expansion since Medicare and Medicaid were created in 1965. In this dissertation, I focus on how health insurance expansion affects the supply side of health care markets as well as health expenditures. While health insurance expansion potentially increases the demand for care, it also creates uncertainty, thereby impacting health care utilization, delivery, and input decisions. In my first chapter, I examine whether changes in health insurance coverage rates impact state-level health care delivery efficiency. Health care providers may vary …

Comparison Of Peak Power On Four Cycling Modes, James O. Olsen 2012 Utah State University

Comparison Of Peak Power On Four Cycling Modes, James O. Olsen

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

There has been a vast amount research conducted concerning many different aspects of cycling performance. This is, in part, due to the relative ease with which variables can be isolated and tested. The equipment used for cycling research is generally compact, stationary, and relatively inexpensive, which make cycling a convenient method to test a variety of variables. In a laboratory setting, researchers often utilize cycle rollers, ergometers, and trainers to best simulate road cycling. Rollers allow subjects the familiarity of using their personal bicycles, and the ability to experience typical factors of cycling such as angular and lateral movement. Trainers …

Complex Adaptive Systems As A Model For Evaluating Organisational Change Caused By The Introduction Of Health Information Systems, Kieren Diment Mr, Ping Yu, K. Garrety

Karin Garrety

This paper documents the preliminary development of a framework for evaluating organisational change processes during the implementation of an electronic nursing documentation system in residential aged care facilities. It starts with a brief outline of organisational change processes. This is followed by a more detailed exposition of the principles underlying complex adaptive systems (CAS) theory, where we explain how mathematical concepts can be used to illuminate qualitative research approaches. Finally we present some preliminary findings on the facilitators and barriers for the introduction of the electronic documentation system, explained with reference to the CAS theory, based on analysis of interviews …

Patterns Of Interaction In Public Health Research Networks: Insight From Network Analysis, Glen P. Mays 2012 University of Kentucky

Patterns Of Interaction In Public Health Research Networks: Insight From Network Analysis, Glen P. Mays

Health Management and Policy Presentations

OBJECTIVES: Studies from the past three decades have found evidence of wide variation in public health practices and policies across states and communities despite an expanding evidence base of efficacious public health strategies, suggesting gaps in implementation and translation processes. Practice-based research networks (PBRNs) are expected to accelerate research participation and translation. This study uses social network analysis methods with twelve Public Health PBRNs to study processes influencing the implementation and translation of research within diverse public health settings.

DATA and METHODS: A cross-sectional network analysis survey was validated and fielded with participants in two cohorts of public health PBRNs …

Ehrs Connect Research And Practice: Where Predictive Modeling, Artificial Intelligence, And Clinical Decision Support Intersect, Casey C. Bennett, Thomas W. Doub, Rebecca Selove

Center for Prevention Research Publications

Objectives

Electronic health records (EHRs) are only a first step in capturing and utilizing health-related data—the challenge is turning that data into useful information. Furthermore, EHRs are increasingly likely to include data relating to patient outcomes, functionality such as clinical decision support, and genetic information as well, and, as such, can be seen as repositories of increasingly valuable information about patients’ health conditions and responses to treatment over time.

Methods

We describe a case study of 423 patients treated by Centerstone within Tennessee and Indiana in which we utilized electronic health record data to generate predictive algorithms of individual patient …
