Academic Center Tiered Operating Room Strategy (Action): Comparing A High Efficiency Or To The Conventional Or, Moaz Bin Yunus Chohan

Canadian healthcare system is under immense economic pressure. In an attempt to resolve the problem, outpatient surgical services were offered to patients presenting with orthopaedic surgical complaints. An observational cohort study was carried out, comparing the conventional surgical setup to the newly designed high-efficiency setup that provided similar care, with a significantly lower operating cost. A total of 200 patients were enrolled in the study. Standardized and unstandardized questionnaires were used to evaluate pre-operative and post-operative patient data that reflected quality of life outcomes. Background: Operating room delays decrease health care system efficiency and increase hospital costs. Data on delays in a multihospital system are sparse.

Purpose: In an effort to improve our operating room efficiency, we investigated operating room delays, the causes and the impending financial impact.

Methods: A retrospective analysis on first case-of-the-day surgeries at three hospitals during 2013 was conducted. Delays were defined as in-room time being after scheduled surgery start time. Length of delay and causes were recorded. At present, over 215 million people live outside their countries of birth, many of which are referred to as diaspora—those that live in host countries but maintain strong sentimental and material links with their countries of origin, their homelands. The critical shortage of Human Resources for Health (HRH) in many developing countries remains a barrier to attaining their health system goals. The website of a long-term care home is the face of the organization, providing not only a snapshot view of the home’s programs and services, but also an insight into the organization’s vision, mission, policies, and culture. The website provides information—either purposefully or inadvertently—about the manner in which the organization responds to diversity among its residents. Guided by an intersectional analysis, this study uses content analysis to examine websites of long-term care homes run by companies, municipalities, and not-for-profit organizations in two provinces in Canada to understand how these websites demonstrate inclusion towards ethnoculturally diverse and LGBTQ older adults. Operational Transformation

Oral care is an essential part of preventative medicine as it minimizes risk for pneumonias and other infections. In nursing home settings, often oral health care is not routinely provided due to a number of issues. A health care system that either owns or contracts nursing home facilities initiated a performance improvement plan to address this patient care concern.

Readmission Rates And Their Impact On Hospital Financial Performance: A Study Of Washington Hospitals, Soumya Upadhyay, Amber L. Stephenson, Dean G. Smith

This longitudinal study examines whether readmission rates, made transparent through Hospital Compare, affect hospital financial performance by examining 98 hospitals in the State of Washington from 2012 to 2014. Readmission rates for acute myocardial infarction (AMI), pneumonia (PN), and heart failure (HF) were examined against operating revenues per patient, operating expenses per patient, and operating margin. Using hospital-level fixed effects regression on 276 hospital year observations, the analysis indicated that a reduction in AMI readmission rates is related with increased operating revenues as expenses associated with costly treatments related with unnecessary readmissions are avoided. Introduction: A review of the medical device adverse events submitted to the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA) Manufacturer and User Facility Device Experience (MAUDE) database was undertaken to determine the major sources of the information.

Methods: The reporter’s occupation and source of the medical device report were determined for acquisition dates Jan 1, 1997 to Dec 31, 2018. A total of 7,766,737 adverse event records were analyzed.

Results: 96.6% of reports originated with the manufacturer. Patients (patients/family/friend) were the most frequent submitter of reports directly to the FDA, almost five times as often as physicians. Nurses submitted reports …

This performance improvement project aimed to increase the communication competency of nurses during intraprofessional interactions at patient handover. An educational program focused on optimizing communication among nurses was implemented in a community-based, not-for-profit, rural hospital.
