Background: Dental caries is a common chronic disease among children and adults alike, posing a substantial health burden. Caries is affected by multiple genetic and environmental factors, and prior studies have found that a substantial proportion of caries susceptibility is genetically inherited.

Methods: To identify such genetic factors, we conducted a genome-wide linkage scan in 464 extended families with 2616 individuals from Iowa, Pennsylvania and West Virginia for three dental caries phenotypes: (1) PRIM: dichotomized as zero versus one or more affected primary teeth, (2) QTOT1: age-adjusted quantitative caries measure for both primary and permanent dentitions including pre-cavitated lesions, and …

Mesenchymal Stem Cell (Msc) Spheroid Constructs Containing Microfluidic Bmp2-Plga Microcapsules In Bone Tissue Engineering., Bhavendrasinh Sayania 2017 University of Pennsylvania

Mesenchymal Stem Cell (Msc) Spheroid Constructs Containing Microfluidic Bmp2-Plga Microcapsules In Bone Tissue Engineering., Bhavendrasinh Sayania

Dental Theses

Recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) is a clinically available osteogenic growth factor. In its current form, approved for clinical use, however, the growth factor is delivered in excessively high doses, resulting in unpredictable bone growth and unwanted clinical side effects. In this study, we evaluated a novel system, slow-release hybrid delivery system for PLGA- rhBMP-2 microcapusles in combination with BM MSC spheroids, and assess if it can lead to improved BMP-derived bone formation. The first aim of this study is to evaluate the osteogenicity of 3D cell spheroids as compared to 2D cultured cells, as we used primary cells …

Oral health is integral to general health and essential for well-being, and therefore, should be prioritized in pediatric nursing education. The purpose of this pilot study was to examine if an oral health education intervention with an Interprofessional Education (IPE) component delivered to third-year baccalaureate nursing students would improve their knowledge of pediatric oral health care. Nursing students (n=99) from a Bachelor of Nursing program in a mid-Western Canadian university completed a survey before and after receiving the educational intervention which included a two-hour lecture from a Dentistry faculty member and a one-hour clinical lab in which nursing students learned …

Fluoride Varnish Application In The Pediatric Population, Ellen Gnaedinger 2017 University of Massachusetts Amherst

Fluoride Varnish Application In The Pediatric Population, Ellen Gnaedinger

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Purpose: The United States (U.S.) has a persistent problem of dental caries in primary teeth with a greater prevalence of dental caries found in minority and poor children. The majority of children in the U.S. experience dental caries in their primary teeth by age eight. This problem could be addressed by primary care providers applying fluoride varnish (FV) to children's teeth starting at the age of primary tooth eruption. The causes of dental caries in children’s primary teeth are multifactorial and therefore require multiple interventions. Around the world providers are utilizing FV as an effective and easily administered strategy. This …

Effects Of Flash-Free Technique On Plaque Retention, White Spot Lesions, And Bracket Failure: A Randomized Clinical Trial, Payam Ishani Afousi 2016 University of Nebraska Medical Center

Effects Of Flash-Free Technique On Plaque Retention, White Spot Lesions, And Bracket Failure: A Randomized Clinical Trial, Payam Ishani Afousi

Theses & Dissertations

A side effect of orthodontic treatment is the development of white spot lesions (WSLs). This thesis attempted to evaluate the effects of the use of APC™ Flash-Free (FF) and conventional adhesives in bonding of orthodontic brackets on plaque formation and retention, WSL development, and bracket failure in-vivo. This was accomplished by collecting plaque samples from around orthodontic appliances and analyzing them using ATP-driven bioluminescence; scanning enamel surfaces using the Canary System™ to evaluate WSL development, and counting the number of spontaneous debonding of brackets of the 4 maxillary incisors in the first 6 months of treatment. It was found …
