Comparative Evaluation Of Apical Extrusion Debris And Irrigant During Calcium Hydroxide Removal And Endodontic Instrumentation Using Three Types Of Instrumentation Systems, Selen İnce Yusufoğlu, Esma Saricam
Journal of Dentistry Indonesia
Many root canal preparation techniques and instruments produce apically extruded materials to a certain extent depending on the preparation system adopted. The extrusion of debris from the apical foramen during chemomechanical preparation may cause postoperative pain and failure of endodontic treatment. Objective: This study evaluates the differences in the apical extrusion of debris and calcium hydroxide (CH) during endodontic instrumentation by using Reciproc Blue (RB), WaveOne Gold (WOG), and F6 Skytaper (F6). Methods: Six experimental study groups (n = 13) were established. The root canal procedures for all groups were prepared with different methods: Group I: One Shape (OS) instrumentation, …

Effect Of Salivary Ph On Water Absorption And Solubility Of Enhanced Resin- Modified Glass Ionomer, Yosi Kusuma Eriwati, Muhammad Dhiaulfikri, Ellyza Herda
Journal of Dentistry Indonesia
The influence of immersion period and liquid pH on water absorption capacity and solubility of the resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) raises the question of whether the critical pH of hydroxyapatite and fluoroapatite influences the water absorption capacity and solubility of enhanced resin-modified glass ionomer (ERMGI). Objective: This study was designed to investigate the effects of immersion periods and various pH levels of artificial saliva on the water absorption and solubility of RMGIC and ERMGI. Methods: Fifty-four disc-shaped specimens (15 mm x 1 mm) of enhanced RMGI (ACTIVATM BioACTIVE-RESTORATIVE, Pulpdent, Watertown, MA, USA) and 54 disc-shaped specimens (15 mm x …

The orthopantomogram (OPG) is a common dental screening radiograph that has multiple implications. However, lateral cephalogram is the investigation of choice for the assessment of vertical facial pattern. Objective: The aim of the current study was to investigate the validity of an OPG parameter i.e. panoramic gonial angle (PGoA) for the assessment of the vertical facial pattern. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on the pretreatment OPG and lateral cephalograms of 200 orthodontic patients aged 15-40 years. The PGoA was measured on both sides and an average was used for statistical analysis. The Pearson’s correlations of PGoA were measured with …

Bleaching is a well-known esthetic dental treatment performed to lighten the tooth shade. Among different cosmetic dental procedures, including direct and indirect tooth-colored restorations, bleaching is likely the most conservative approach. Bleaching has been accepted well by patients and proven as a safe and effective approach. Objective: Tooth bleaching can be conducted at home or in offices. This study was performed to compare the enamel microhardness before bleaching and one and eight weeks after the application of different bleaching agents. Methods: Forty human premolars were randomly divided into four groups, and their buccal surface underwent a Vickers microhardness test …

Nanotechnology is a branch of science focusing on the manipulation of materials measured on the nanoscale (size = 1–100 nm). Recent advances in the field of nanodentistry have resulted in the development of alternative treatment plans for common dental problems, bringing about a paradigm shift in dentistry. Nanorobots, also known as “nanites” or “nanomachines,” are theoretical microscopic devices that may be used for the diagnosis and treatment of oral health problems. This paper aims to discuss the latest innovations in the field of nanodentistry.

Localized gingival overgrowths (LGOs) are relatively common clinical findings. These lesions can be associated with chronic irritation, infections, or they can represent benign or malignant tumors that can either be primary or metastatic. The etiology of these lesions is multifactorial, but the most prevalent cause is reactive hyperplasia and inflammation induced by dental plaque. Objective: This study presents the prevalence of LGOs in Northeast Thailand and identifies the most common LGOs in the region. Methods: A series of 218 LGO cases was studied. Results: Pyogenic granuloma (PG), gingival squamous cell carcinoma (GSCC), and peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) were the three …

In the oral cavity, anxiety is often associated with the etiology of parafunctional habits. Anxiety can be measured using self-administered instruments, such as the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and Short-Health Anxiety Inventory (SHAI), which is specifically used in the medical setting. Objectives: We are describing a case of HIV positive patient with health anxiety who presented to the oral medicine clinic in our hospital with a complaint of …

Management Of Atypical Symmetrical Ankylosis Of Maxillary Deciduous First Molars With Permanent Successors: A Single Case Report, Kemal Gulduren, Aylin İslam
Journal of Dentistry Indonesia
Dentoalveolar ankylosis is the union between the tooth root and the dentoalveolar bone. Clinically, the affected tooth is unsuccessful to erupt, exhibits an infraocclusal position within the dentoalveolar arch, elicits a metallic sound on percussion, and has reduced or absent mobility. Objective: This single case report illustrates the management of idiopathically ankylosed maxillary deciduous first molars. Case report: The patient was a 6-year-old female with maxillary deciduous first molars in infraocclusal position due to idiopathic ankylosis. The ankylosed deciduous teeth were monitored regularly. After a 27-month follow-up, the infraocclusion became severe. No vertical deficiencies in other alveolar regions were detected. …

Implementation Of A Standardized Oral Screening Tool By Pediatric Cardiologists, Shelley Mccargar
Nursing Graduate Publications and Presentations
Background: An examination of procedure cancellations found that the lack of preprocedural oral screening was a preventable cause, for children with congenital heart disease. The purpose of this study was to implement an oral screening tool within the pediatric cardiology clinic, with referral to pediatric dental providers for positive screens. The target population were children age ≥ 6 mo. to < 18 yr. old, being referred for cardiac procedures. Methods: The Quality Implementation Framework method was used for this study design. The multimodal intervention included education, audit and feedback, screening guidelines, environmental support, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Baseline rates for oral screenings were determined by retrospective chart audit from January 2018 to January 2019 (n=211). Adherence to the oral screening tool was the outcome measure. Positive oral screens, resulting in referral to the pediatric dental clinic, were measured as a secondary outcome. Provider compliance rates were used as a process measure. Results: Data collected over 14-weeks showed a 29% increase in documentation of oral screenings prior to referral, as compared to the retrospective chart audit. During the study period 13% of completed screenings were positive (n=5). Provider compliance for the period averaged 70%. Conclusion: A substantial increase in preprocedural oral screenings by pediatric cardiologists was achieved using the Quality Implementation Framework, and targeted interventions.

Integrating Oral Health In Primary Care To Reduce Early Childhood Caries (Ecc): Evidence-Based Guidelines And Recommendations, Alyssa Heiser
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
Early childhood caries (ECC) is the most common chronic disease affecting children, despite being almost 100% preventable. ECC has become associated with a multi-factorial etiology including poor feeding practices, enamel hypoplasia, oral colonization by cariogenic bacteria, and demineralized tooth structure due to metabolism of sugars by tooth-adherent bacteria. ECC can lead to school absences, poor school performance, difficulty sleeping, attention problems, slower social development, and poor overall health. According to U.S. Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) guidelines, all children are at potential risk for developing ECC beginning at the time of first tooth eruption. While there are no validated multivariate …
