Background: With the needs of patients in modern healthcare becoming increasingly complex, providers may benefit from using adaptive skills to develop therapeutic alliance in patient-centered care. This review examined the potential application and benefit of theatrical improvisational skills in healthcare generally and in the allied health profession of speech-language pathology specifically.

Methods: A literature search was completed across 6 databases. Search terms included “clinical improvisation,” “medical improvisation,” and “applied improvisation.” Searches were limited to journal articles published in English from November 2011 through November 2021. It is a powerful tool for collecting rich data to explore and build theory in new areas of research with limited existing theory. Ehlers Danlos Syndromes (EDS) are collagen-based hereditary connective tissue disorders characterized by decreased tissue integrity. Historically, the musculoskeletal and dermatological manifestations have been emphasized. However, EDS is associated with symptoms and conditions affecting nearly all body systems, including swallowing (dysphagia). A Cohort Discovery analysis at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) revealed that 14.9% ± 0.3% of patients with an ICD-10 diagnosis of EDS also have an ICD-10 diagnosis of dysphagia in their medical record. Despite only one article in the current literature, the prevalence of dysphagia in EDS is not insignificant and warrants further investigation. Our long-term hypothesis is …

In order to excel in school, all students need to learn how to spell. Students who are D/deaf and hard of hearing (d/hh) often struggle with spelling due to most methods of spelling education involving connecting spoken/heard sounds to letters, syllables, and words. Eye movements reflect cognitive-linguistic processing of neurotypical readers. Numerous reading related eye movement measures are associated with language processing, including saccades, fixations, word skipping, and regressions. Eye movements have also been used to examine language processing and reading in disordered populations including persons with aphasia. This study examined whether eye movement measures (i.e., fixation duration, gaze duration, total viewing time, skipping rate, saccade amplitude, regression path duration) obtained from connected text paragraph reading were associated with language severity (WAB-R) and reading comprehension skills (RCBA-2) in persons with various subtypes of aphasia as well as whether those same eye movement measures …

Real-world conversations are often accompanied by some sort of interference that challenges the clarity of the speaker’s message, causing listeners to exert more effort to understand speech. Previous research has demonstrated that when listening to speech becomes difficult, various regions of the brain are recruited beyond those which engage during optimal listening conditions. However, the neural correlates that underly listening effort are not fully understood. Importantly, the pupillary response can be used to index listening effort, such that pupil size increases with increasing cognitive demand. This retrospective study quantified normal LVC (laryngeal vestibular closure) variance and how influential factors (age category, sex, and swallow task) influence normative ranges. A total of 195 healthy, non-dysphagic participants, including 85 males and 110 females from the ages of 21 to 89 years, participated in a modified barium swallow study. Seven swallow tasks, with varying viscosities and volumes, per participant were analyzed to measure two temporal LVC measures: LVCrt (reaction time) and dLVC (duration). Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have difficulty perceiving subtle social cues such as tone of voice, facial expressions, body language, and physical boundaries. These difficulties are well-established in the literature and lead to the social communication challenges characteristic of the disorder. Although the detection of subtle social cues is critical to all human interaction, there are other processes at play as humans relate and interact on a day-to-day basis.
