Children with velocardiofacial syndrome (VCFS) have a variety of complex needs. Research shows that VCFS is characterized by a combination of medical problems, developmental delays, and learning disabilities, which vary from child to child. This syndrome also puts adolescents at a higher risk for developing psychiatric and psychotic disorders. The complexity of symptoms that can arise from VCFS can influence the ability of these children to communicate, socialize, and learn effectively. Tight junctions in mammals and septate junctions in insects are essential for epithelial integrity. We show here that, in the Drosophila intestine, smooth septate junction proteins provide barrier and signaling functions. During an RNAi screen for genes that regulate adult midgut tissue growth, we found that loss of two smooth septate junction components, Snakeskin and Mesh, caused a hyperproliferation phenotype. By examining epitope-tagged endogenous Snakeskin and Mesh, we demonstrate that the two proteins are present in the cytoplasm of differentiating enteroblasts and in cytoplasm and septate junctions of mature enterocytes. Reports in the media by celebrities have sparked an interest in a phenomenon being called “selfie-wrist,” in which smartphone users develop symptoms traditionally associated with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). There has been no research to date which investigates the claims of “selfie wrist.” The primary aim of this study was to address the validity of “selfie wrist” claims. The secondary aim of this study was to further investigate the effects of texting on musculoskeletal health, taking into account the differences between texting one-handed versus two-handed, and the effect of using a grip device while texting.

Research has suggested that exercise has an effect on memory function. Studies have also shown that exercise mitigates the effects of stress. The relationship between exercise and stress in regard to memory function is noteworthy. There has been little research on this relationship in young adults. This thesis discusses the effects of acute exercise on the episodic memory of young adults when they are exposed to a psychosocial stressor. The results of the research study show that acute aerobic exercise before memory encoding or consolidation was not associated with memory function after exposure to a stressor. The Anatomy Academic Assistant (AAA) practicum is a peer-mentoring program that helps participants further develop leadership skills. The goal of this research was to analyze leadership qualities through participant perspective and analyze the effectiveness of the AAA practicum in enhancing these leadership qualities. A 25-question survey, measuring participant perspective, was designed to include both rating-scale questions and free response questions. Rating-scale questions used a Likert scale with a corresponding assigned value. Free response questions also provided qualitative data that was grouped into overarching themes in a generated word cloud. With the increased numbers of certified veterinary radiologists and animal imaging facilities, best practices in 3D model design and printing can be explored. This project was two-fold. A common method of treating skeletal muscle injury is temperature therapy. Temperature affects one of the initial aspects of skeletal muscle healing, the increasing of vascular permeability. Previous data accumulated from the Ursinus College Skeletal Muscle Lab suggests that vascular permeability following temperature therapy is different between the anatomically intact male and female mice. Perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) surrounds blood vessels, is thermogenic, and secretes adipokines that can be vasoprotective. During aging and obesity, PVAT loses its thermogenic capacity, shows increased inflammation, and secretes proatherogenic cytokines. Our collaborative research has previously shown that dietary methionine restriction (MetR) in mice can decrease adiposity, improve glucose sensitivity, and induce PVAT to become more thermogenic. Irradiation therapy continues to be an accepted medical treatment for many cancers, yet patients are at increased risk for bone deterioration and other skeletal-related events. Irradiation (IR) negatively affects trabecular architecture through increased osteoclast activity and decreased osteoblast activity. Additionally, IR induces increased bone marrow (BM) adipocyte expansion, which may compound IR-induced bone disease. Antibodies to sclerostin (Scl-Ab) increase bone mass and strength by increasing bone formation and reducing bone resorption. Parathyroid hormone (PTH) analogs are the main anabolic pharmacological agent for osteoporosis. PTH is an endogenous hormone. Its amino acids 1-34 bind the parathyroid hormone receptor (PTH1r), a G-coupled protein receptor expressed in kidney, fat, and bone. PTH increases trabecular bone mass by promoting the differentiation of the mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) into the osteogenic lineage. The Zinc Finger Protein 467 (Zfp467) is a potential downstream target of PTH1r and an important mediator of the MSC into the adipogenic lineage. Suppression of endogenous gonadal function is an important goal of transgender hormone therapy in both female-to-male (FTM) and male-to-female (MTF) patients. Current recommendations include exogenous hormone therapy in the form of testosterone (T) for FTM or estradiol (E2) for MTF, in addition to a GnRH agonist or progestin to effectively suppress endogenous gonadal activity. Osteoblasts generate bone by secreting collagen and mineralizing it in response to various signaling cues. We have previously identified bioenergetic pathways that are active during osteoblastogenesis. We showed that a majority of ATP generated by differentiated osteoblasts is through glycolysis in contrast to undifferentiated cells that are oxidative phosphorylation dependent. To identify mechanisms involved in this shift we hypothesized that increased mitochondrial turnover through mitophagy reprograms metabolism towards glycolysis. Atherosclerosis is an inflammatory disease characterized by arterial wall thickening and plaque accumulation, and is a major cause of death worldwide. Vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC), which have the unique ability to transition from mature contractile cells to myofibroblasts and macrophagelike foam cells, and adopt a proinflammatory state contribute to atherogenic microenvironment (1). We aimed to investigate how Spry1, a regulator of receptor tyrosine kinase signaling, affects hypercholesterolemia induced plaque formation in mice by manipulating Spry1 expression specifically in VSMC.

Background: Vascular occlusive diseases, such as atherosclerosis, underlie ischemic heart disease and stroke, the leading causes of death worldwide. We are interested in vascular smooth muscle cells (SMC) in the pathogenesis of disease, as they contribute to plaque formation and may determine susceptibility to rupture upon switching from a quiescent/contractile phenotype to a proliferative/migratory one. Notch signaling is implicated in vascular disease progression, and we previously identified a Notch receptor-specific regulatory role in SMC proliferation and contractile phenotype. We thus hypothesize that Notch signaling within vascular SMC can regulate plaque morphology.
