Joseph Banks And The Continuing Influence Of European Colonisation On Australian Herbal Practice, Sue Evans 2010 Southern Cross University

Joseph Banks And The Continuing Influence Of European Colonisation On Australian Herbal Practice, Sue Evans

Dr Sue Evans

The practice of Western herbal medicine in Australia is characterised by a dependence on botanically exotic species rather than those which are native and indigenous to this country. Medicinal herbs were among the plants chosen by botanist Sir Joseph Banks to be transported from England for cultivation in the new Australian colony in 1788. While there are some records of the use of local medicinal plants by early settlers, evidence of this information originating from Indigenous Australians is absent and today very few native or indigenous plants are found in the materia medica used by Western herbalists in Australia. The Isleño Décima: Media And Memory In Spanish-Speaking South Louisiana, Jeanne Gillespie

JEANNE GILLESPIE

From the early fifteenth century to the end of the eighteenth century, the Spanish colonial process involved the settling of vast tracks of land. From their first colonial experiment in the Canary Islands in 1402, the Spanish administration learned that it was sometimes more effective to import assimilated settlers from already established colonial possessions than to attempt massive conversion and cultural assimilation. To shore up the vast spaces of the northern Gulf Coast, particularly "West Florida" and eastern Texas, the Spanish governors sent for colonists including groups of Canary Islanders who settled outposts along the Red River, as well as ...

Associate Prof. Dr. Noorzurani Robson

Background: Cigarette smoking causes significant morbidity and mortality and is a major public health concern worldwide. Primary care doctors are in a unique position that enables them to promote smoking cessation, as smokers are more aware of their health at the time of their clinic visit. It is thus important to offer effective treatment to help smokers stop smoking. Methods: A search of PubMed was done up to 16 December 2009, using the keywords “varenicline” alone, “varenicline” and “family medicine”, and “varenicline” and “primary care”. The search produced 426 articles on varenicline. The articles that were chosen were case reports ...

Nicotine-Replacement Therapy: A Proven Treatment For Smoking Cessation: Cpd, Noorzurani Robson Associate Prof. Dr.

Associate Prof. Dr. Noorzurani Robson

Smoking is a major cause of cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases and cancer. Despite the high prevalence of smokers worldwide, smokers are often neglected and not offered effective assistance with quitting their habits. In order to overcome this public health burden, effective treatment is needed to help smokers stop smoking. Among the pharmacological treatments available, nicotine-replacement therapy (NRT), when prescribed in combination with behavioural support, has been proven to be effective in helping a wide range of smokers to quit. NRT helps smokers during the withdrawal process by replacing a proportion of the nicotine formerly obtained from cigarettes. NRT is available ...

Looking For The Water From A Deeper Well : An Investigation Into Spirituality And Natural Medicine Education, Airdre Grant

Theses

This investigation addresses the importance attached to spirituality within the culture and curriculum of a select group of naturopathy training programs in Australia. The investigation is premised on a view that spirituality is foundational to the practice of naturopathy, which has as its inspiration a belief that an integrated balance between body, mind and spirit is essential to the attainment and maintenance of good health. This holistic view of health is not particular to natural medicine generally, but the practice of naturopathy relies heavily on this view for its uniqueness. Naturopathy has a lineage dating back to the ancient Greeks ...
