Measuring The Outcomes Of Therapeutic Listening In Children With Learning And Developmental Disabilities, Hannah Tashjian, Donielle Hair, Phoebe Taasan
Master's Theses and Capstone Projects
Anecdotal reports of the Therapeutic Listening ®-Quickshifts (TL-Q) technique report positive effects on child behavior but the individualized approach requires further supporting evidence. TL-Q is an individualized sound-based program used to facilitate sensory processing skills and is believed to improve interpersonal, social, and cognitive skills (Frick & Hacker, 2001). This study examines the use of a standardized protocol to measure the specific outcomes of the TL-Q program using a practice-based evidence (PBE) approach for the purpose of aggregating data for clinical practice. The protocol was used to measure the outcomes of the TL-Q program in a convenience sample of 23 children ...
The Healing Garden Institute (Hgi): Promoting An Integrated Approach To Disease Management For Vulnerable Inner-City Communities Of Worcester, Ma, Thidi Tshiguvho
Community Engagement and Research Symposia
The prevalence of chronic diseases is increasing at an alarming rate globally. About half of adults in the USA have a chronic condition (CDC 2009). Disparities in chronic diseases prevalence based on race, ethnicity and residence have been well document. Many of these diseases are a result of poor access to health care, behavioral risk factors, family history and other socio-economic determinants. In Worcester, Massachusetts, inner-city residents seem to suffer disproportionally from chronic diseases. Chronic diseases management emphasizes treatment of symptoms, dietary and lifestyle changes, and daily self-management practices. Self-management is challenging for vulnerable populations because of their burdening daily ...

Attitudes And The Practice Of Documentation Of Indigenous Knowledge By The Traditional Health Practitioners In Kwara State, Nigeria., A. O. Issa Dr., Peter Olufemi Owoeye Mr.., Olubunmi O. Awoyemi Barr.
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This paper examines the attitudes and the practice of documentation of indigenous knowledge by the traditional health practitioners (THP) in Kwara State, Nigeria. Indigenous knowledge has been playing significant roles most especially in the primary health of the people in rural areas. This important knowledge is prone to attrition due to non-documentation and the World Bank has warned that if the knowledge is not documented, it will be lost. The study adopted descriptive survey research design and utilized questionnaire to collect data for the study. 30 traditional health practitioners were purposively selected based on their experience for the study. Simple ...

Background: Patients admitted to intensive care units (ICU) with acute respiratory failure (ARF) face chronic complications that can impede return to normal daily function. A mobile, collaborative critical care model may enhance the recovery of ARF survivors.
Methods: The Mobile Critical Care Recovery Program (m-CCRP) study is a two arm, randomized clinical trial. We will randomize 620 patients admitted to the ICU with acute respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation in a 1:1 ratio to one of two arms (310 patients per arm) – m-CCRP intervention versus attention control. Those in the intervention group will meet with a care coordinator after ...

The Magic Wand: A Case Study Of Chronic Neck Pain, 2018 James A Haley VA Hospital
The Magic Wand: A Case Study Of Chronic Neck Pain, Sandra L. Winkler
The Qualitative Report
Medications used to manage chronic pain have documented side effects including drug dependency, drug interaction, and adverse systemic reactions. This case study used Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis to understand how one individual experienced chronic neck pain including pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical interventions. Convenience sampling identified Ms. P, an individual with a 10-year history of chronic pain. The research questions were: “How does one individual with chronic neck pain describe their experience living with neck pain?” and “How does one individual with chronic neck pain manage their pain?” Three super-ordinate themes emerged: pain pervades everything, finding relief, and recovery. Findings suggest that living ...
Veterans With Chronic Back Pain Managed In Primary Care: Patient Aligned Care Team, 2018 Walden University
Veterans With Chronic Back Pain Managed In Primary Care: Patient Aligned Care Team, Bonnie Grimes
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Chronic pain affects approximately 100 million adults in the United States annually, and costs exceeding $635 billion. Pain is the most common complaint in primary care, and chronic pain accounts for up to 16% of emergency room visits. Additionally, chronic pain accounts for 25% of missed workdays annually. Veterans are particularly vulnerable to chronic pain and have an increased incidence of chronic non-cancer pain. Chronic pain for veterans cost the Veterans Administration (VA) about $385 billion each year. This project evaluated the Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) model to manage chronic lower back pain (CLBP) at a VA primary care ...
Evidence-Based Strategies And Practices To Manage Veterans' Noncancer Pain: A Systematic Review, 2018 Walden University
Evidence-Based Strategies And Practices To Manage Veterans' Noncancer Pain: A Systematic Review, Janice D. Ivery
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Opioid therapy is widely used to treat veterans with chronic noncancer pain (CNCP) despite evidence indicating patient safety concerns with the treatment. Although there is a place for opioid therapy in chronic pain management, opioids are not recommended as the first line of treatment for CNCP because of the risk for accidental overdose and death. The purpose of this project was to examine alternative practices for managing CNCP through a systematic review of the literature guided by the conceptual model of the Joanna Briggs Institute method for systematic reviews (JBIM-SR). A critical appraisal of the literature was conducted, and data ...
Effects Of Micronutrients On The Status Of Hiv-Infected African American Women, 2018 Walden University
Effects Of Micronutrients On The Status Of Hiv-Infected African American Women, Veronica Alicia Graham
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Weight loss among HIV-infected African American women (AAW), results in the fall of the cluster of differentiation (CD4) cell count and an increase in the viral load. There are 48,126 HIV-infected AAW who reported weight loss within the first year. AAW who report more than 10% weight loss within the first year progress to AIDS due to a deficiency in micronutrients and poor linkage to care. The phenomenon that occurs with individuals living with HIV does not necessarily occur among individuals who have cancer, heart disease, or some other life-threatening illness, and this phenomenon indicates a direct threat to ...

Master's Projects and Capstones
The Institute of Medicine noted patient centered care as one of the six priority areas of improvement for the U.S. healthcare system. Recognizing that patients in hospice require specialized care to address the physical, emotional and spiritual needs that are associated with a terminal illness, the focus of this project is to improve the hospice nurses’ knowledge of and confidence in the use of aromatherapy for symptom management. There is recognition within the field of healthcare that patients are interested in having options for treatment. With little to no side effects, aromatherapy has been shown to be an effective ...

The Appearance And Effects Of Music Therapy In The Solid Organ Transplant Unit, Tracey J. Elliott
The Downtown Review
Patients admitted to the solid-organ transplant unit face a plethora of physical, emotional, and psychological challenges. Risk of infection, perception of pain, depression, surgery complications, and exhaustion are just a few hardships that a patient may face while hospitalized. Patient need areas thus serve as goal areas for the hospital support staff. While intervention is provided to patients in a variety of forms, music therapy is an effective means of treatment due to its multi-faceted nature; a music therapist can address a variety of goal areas with any given patient. The first section of this paper will briefly outline the ...

People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice
Animal-assisted interventions (AAI) have developed considerably in the last half century, prompting various private and public realities dealing with AAI worldwide to work on and establish standards and best practice. However, AAI are still far from being regulated harmoniously. In this context, Italy offers a unique example at world level: here the spread of AAI has set in motion an ethical and legal reflection that led to the creation of the Italian National Reference Centre for AAI (NRC AAI) by ministerial decree in 2009 and the approval of National Guidelines for AAI in 2015. The Italian legislation on AAI is ...

Interior Design Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity
Background Children spend a significant portion of their days in sedentary behavior (SB) and on average fail to engage in adequate physical activity (PA). The school built environment may influence SB and PA, but research is limited. This natural experiment evaluated whether an elementary school designed to promote movement impacted students' school-time SB and PA.
Methods Accelerometers measured SB and PA at pre and post time-points in an intervention group who moved to the new school (n = 21) and in a comparison group experiencing no school environmental change (n = 20). Difference-in-difference (DD) analysis examined SB and PA outcomes in these ...
