The Effects Of Increasing Running Speed On Vgrf And Asymmetry, 2020 East Tennessee State University
The Effects Of Increasing Running Speed On Vgrf And Asymmetry, Kaela M. Hierholzer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Biomechanical and physiological parameters related to running performance are usually studied separately. However, evaluating both aspects together could be beneficial in improving athletic performance. The purpose of this study was to observe the change in peak vGRF and asymmetry as speed increases, while observing physiological responses during a O2maxtest. Data from athlete monitoring of 12 cross-country and triathlon athletes were analyzed. The athlete monitoring protocol included three unweighted countermovement jumps and a O2maxtest performed by the athletes. The athletes had an average O2maxof 53.4 ± 7.7 mL/kg/min, while their average vGRF ...

"A Comparison Of Variable Selection Methods Using Bootstrap Samples From Environmental Metal Mixture Data", Paul-Yvann Djamen 4785403, Paul-Yvann Djamen
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
In this thesis, I studied a newly developed variable selection method SODA, and three customarily used variable selection methods: LASSO, Elastic net, and Random forest for environmental mixture data. The motivating datasets have neuro-developmental status as responses and metal measurements and demographic variables as covariates. The challenges for variable selections include (1) many measured metal concentrations are highly correlated, (2) there are many possible ways of modeling interactions among the metals, (3) the relationships between the outcomes and explanatory variables are possibly nonlinear, (4) the signal to noise ratio in the real data may be low. To compare these methods ...

Type One Diabetes Mellitus In Immigrant And Minority Pediatric Populations, Kristina Nielson
Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is a prevalent chronic illness affecting children and adolescents. Globally, it is estimated that at least 1 million children under the age of 19 years are affected by T1DM. Immigrants and minorities have worse diabetic outcomes than the majority population. The purpose of this article is to identify common challenges in children with T1DM who are part of immigrant or minority populations. Major health challenges for children with T1DM who are immigrants or minorities include issues regarding access to healthcare, communication, and cultural adaptation. Access of children with T1DM to high-quality healthcare and new diabetes ...
Peer-Led Education Expedites De-Prescribing Proton Pump Inhibitors For Appropriate Veterans, 2020 University of San Diego
Peer-Led Education Expedites De-Prescribing Proton Pump Inhibitors For Appropriate Veterans, Mary H. Bowman
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts
Costly proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) have been widely prescribed since the 1990’s for prevention and treatment of ulcers and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Evidence published since 2012 demonstrates risks associated with taking PPIs longer than eight weeks. Primary care providers (PCPs) mostly de-prescribe PPIs for persons not meeting criteria for long term use. Many patients resist discontinuation.
A three-month evidenced based practice (EBP) education project was conducted by a nurse practitioner to improve PCP peer de-prescribing successes with appropriate patients in an outpatient California based veteran Primary Care Clinic. Fifteen PCPs were pretested about usual care practices between two ...

Master's Projects and Capstones
Purpose: This project aimed to measure the acceptability and feasibility of plant-based diets among low-income individuals with type II diabetes at the Samaritan House Food Pharmacy and to create a user-centered pilot program to encourage the adoption of a plant-based diet.
Background: Plant-based diets are effective for preventing, treating, and reversing type II diabetes, but there is not much evidence about the acceptability and feasibility of these diets.
Methods: Focus groups were used to gather qualitative data about the acceptability and feasibility of plant-based diets in the target population. The researcher conducted interviews with Food Pharmacy program leaders to learn ...
Recruiting And Retaining Np Preceptors, 2020 The University of San Francisco
Recruiting And Retaining Np Preceptors, Angelica Renteria
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
It is estimated that by 2020, the shortage of primary care providers will reach over 20,000. This has led to a surge of nurse practitioner (NP) programs across the nation. Recruiting and retaining preceptors is of paramount importance. Barriers and incentives to precepting must be identified in order to maximize teaching capacity. More effective ways of training NP students (NPs) need to be explored to capitalize on the time preceptors invest with students. The adoption of the OMP teaching model may facilitate training for the preceptor and improve the learning of NPs due to its simplicity and efficiency.

The Efficacy Of Extended-Release Eprinomectin For The Reduction Of Horn Flies, Face Flies, And Fecal Egg Counts Of Parasitic Nematodes In Replacement Beef Heifers, Sophia F. Landers
Animal Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of extended-release eprinomectin against horn flies, face flies, and fecal egg counts of parasitic nematodes in crossbreed replacement beef heifers. Fifty-four heifers were randomly placed into three treatment groups (N=18 heifers/treatment). Group 1 was administered the labeled dosage of extended-release eprinomectin on day 0. Group 2 acted as the negative control. Group 3 received the anthelmintic injection once a quarter of the heifers in the group reached the threshold treatment level for horn flies (N=200 flies/animal; day 41). Nematode infections were measured via fecal egg counts ...

Reaching The Summit: From Exposure To Immersion In Quality Improvement In Physical Therapy Education, Tami Struessel, Nicole M. Sleddens, Katherine J. Jones
Posters and Presentations: Physical Therapy
Following the release of its 2001 report, Crossing the Quality Chasm: A New Health System for the 21st Century, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) convened a summit of 150 interprofessional healthcare educators to reform health professions education. As a result, in 2002, the IOM established an overarching vision to achieve care that is safe, effective, patient-centered, timely efficient, and equitable: “All health professionals should be educated to deliver patient-centered care as members of an interdisciplinary team, emphasizing evidence-based practice, quality improvement approaches, and informatics.” Physical Therapy educators have expanded curricula to teach three of these five competencies. We routinely teach ...
Direct And Indirect Treatment Effects In Multilingual People With Aphasia, 2020 The Graduate Center, City University of New York
Direct And Indirect Treatment Effects In Multilingual People With Aphasia, Aviva Lerman
All Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Background: Successfully assessing and treating aphasia in multilingual people requires a detailed understanding of the mechanisms underlying language processing in the multilingual population, and the potential impairments to those mechanisms. The balance between spreading activation of language processes via treatment and controlling interference of competing items within the lexico-semantic networks appears to be a key factor in determining whether treatment effects generalise within and across languages in multilingual people with aphasia (Kiran, Sandberg, Gray, Ascenso, & Kester, 2013).
This balance can be exploited through treatment, which, if carefully chosen, should maximise potential within- and cross-language generalisation. One treatment that has been ...

Genetic And Functional Approaches To Understanding Autoimmune And Inflammatory Pathologies, Abbas Raza
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Our understanding of genetic predisposition to inflammatory and autoimmune diseases has been enhanced by large scale quantitative trait loci (QTL) linkage mapping and genome-wide association studies (GWAS). However, the resolution and interpretation of QTL linkage mapping or GWAS findings are limited. In this work, we complement genetic predictions for several human diseases including multiple sclerosis (MS) and systemic capillary leakage syndrome (SCLS) with genetic and functional data in model organisms to associate genes with phenotypes and diseases.
Focusing on MS, an autoimmune inflammatory disease of the central nervous system (CNS), we experimentally tested the effect of three of the GWAS ...
