Peer-Led Education Expedites De-Prescribing Proton Pump Inhibitors For Appropriate Veterans, Mary H. Bowman 2020 University of San Diego

Peer-Led Education Expedites De-Prescribing Proton Pump Inhibitors For Appropriate Veterans, Mary H. Bowman

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts

Costly proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) have been widely prescribed since the 1990’s for prevention and treatment of ulcers and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Evidence published since 2012 demonstrates risks associated with taking PPIs longer than eight weeks. Primary care providers (PCPs) mostly de-prescribe PPIs for persons not meeting criteria for long term use. Many patients resist discontinuation.

A three-month evidenced based practice (EBP) education project was conducted by a nurse practitioner to improve PCP peer de-prescribing successes with appropriate patients in an outpatient California based veteran Primary Care Clinic. Fifteen PCPs were pretested about usual care practices between two ...

Methods: Focus groups were used to gather qualitative data about the acceptability and feasibility of plant-based diets in the target population. The researcher conducted interviews with Food Pharmacy program leaders to learn ...

Recruiting And Retaining Np Preceptors, Angelica Renteria 2020 The University of San Francisco

Recruiting And Retaining Np Preceptors, Angelica Renteria

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

It is estimated that by 2020, the shortage of primary care providers will reach over 20,000. This has led to a surge of nurse practitioner (NP) programs across the nation. Recruiting and retaining preceptors is of paramount importance. Barriers and incentives to precepting must be identified in order to maximize teaching capacity. More effective ways of training NP students (NPs) need to be explored to capitalize on the time preceptors invest with students. The adoption of the OMP teaching model may facilitate training for the preceptor and improve the learning of NPs due to its simplicity and efficiency.

Animal Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of extended-release eprinomectin against horn flies, face flies, and fecal egg counts of parasitic nematodes in crossbreed replacement beef heifers. Fifty-four heifers were randomly placed into three treatment groups (N=18 heifers/treatment). Group 1 was administered the labeled dosage of extended-release eprinomectin on day 0. Group 2 acted as the negative control. Group 3 received the anthelmintic injection once a quarter of the heifers in the group reached the threshold treatment level for horn flies (N=200 flies/animal; day 41). Nematode infections were measured via fecal egg counts ...

This case example focuses on a feminist therapist’s work with a young woman who has both SMI and complex PTSD, resulting in struggles across several domains. Feminist therapeutic interventions of developing an egalitarian relationship, exploration of intersectional multicultural dynamics, building ...

The Biased Media And Their Utilization Of Propaganda: The True Obstructionists Of World Events And Our Minds, David B. Ross, Gina Peyton, Melissa Tara Sasso, Rande Matteson, Cortney Matteson 2019 Nova Southeastern University

The Biased Media And Their Utilization Of Propaganda: The True Obstructionists Of World Events And Our Minds, David B. Ross, Gina Peyton, Melissa Tara Sasso, Rande Matteson, Cortney Matteson

Dr. Melissa Tara Sasso

Propaganda is a widely controversial issue, especially when it collides with the media and politicians. This complex system creates tension between those who have a personal agenda to disseminate false statements to advance their plan to manipulate the minds of the public. Based upon 24/7 cable news and social media, there seems to be a miscommunication and disconnect from the truth regarding how the media reports world events, politics, environment, and how politicians were elected to help their constituents, not their own personal agendas. This chapter will address the concern for a better system of reporting the facts and ...

Nurse-Driven Protocol To Reduce Urinary Catheter Infections: A Quality Improvement Project, Sara Burrington 2019 The University of San Francisco

Nurse-Driven Protocol To Reduce Urinary Catheter Infections: A Quality Improvement Project, Sara Burrington

Master's Projects and Capstones

Costs of healthcare are astronomical, not only in the financial sense, but in many aspects of life for both patients and healthcare providers. Costs include those accompanying healthcare associated infections (HAI), where as a result of environmental factors, a patient acquires an infection during their admission. Since 2008, Medicare and Medicaid no longer reimburse hospitals for infections deemed ‘reasonably preventable.’ The biggest offender of this type of HAI is overwhelmingly, catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) (Kennedy, Greene & Saint, 2013). With approximately 31% of the inpatient population requiring an indwelling catheter at some point throughout their stay, risk of infection ...

A Formal Hcahps Teaching Program Targeting Communication Improves Hcahps Scores, Bobbie Davis 2019 University of San Francisco

A Formal Hcahps Teaching Program Targeting Communication Improves Hcahps Scores, Bobbie Davis

Master's Projects and Capstones

The Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey given to patients after discharge from an inpatient unit is a validate tool used to determine the level of patient experience. Organizations across the country, including the Northern California Academic Medical Center, have implemented many initiatives aimed at improving these scores. HCAHPS scores for the hematology/oncology unit at this medical center remain low even after previous education efforts. The aim of this quality improvement project was to improve the patient experience, as evidenced by HCAHPS scores, with the implementation of an HCAHPS teaching program for nursing staff, focusing ...

Offering Medical Providers Capacity And Competence In Caring For Transgender And Non-Binary Patients: Evaluation Of A Pilot Digital Training Program, Lexis Manzara 2019 The University of San Francisco

Offering Medical Providers Capacity And Competence In Caring For Transgender And Non-Binary Patients: Evaluation Of A Pilot Digital Training Program, Lexis Manzara

Master's Projects and Capstones

Purpose: Stigma and discrimination in health care settings contribute to health disparities for transgender and non-binary (TGNB) people. Evidence suggests that a lack of training on the care for transgender and non-binary TGNB patients in medical school curricula has contributed to providers feeling unprepared to provide quality care for this population. Health care providers have the opportunity to play a key role in the reduction of health disparities for TGNB patients.

Methods: Twenty-five health care providers completed the eight-module digital training program. Pre- and post-tests assessed provider knowledge, self-efficacy, preparedness, and behavior. Paired samples t-tests were conducted to compare pre-and ...

Burnout, Depression And Suicide Prevention For Nursing Staff In High-Intensity Settings, April Ritchie 2019 The University of San Francisco

Burnout, Depression And Suicide Prevention For Nursing Staff In High-Intensity Settings, April Ritchie

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Nurses working in high-intensity settings experience burnout at higher rates than in other nursing areas. Burnout in healthcare is a problem estimated as high as 70% by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Burnout can lead to depressive symptoms, which can lead to suicidal ideation in affected healthcare providers, which makes early identification and treatment of utmost importance to the mental and physical wellbeing of these nurses.

The purpose of this project is to examine burnout in nursing staff working in high-intensity areas of the hospital in order to help identify burnout and/or depressive symptoms before they lead ...

Ulnar Collateral Ligament Reconstruction With Traditional Docking Compared To Novel Surgical Techniques, Kayley D. Guy, Brendon P. McDermott, Kaitlin Gallagher, Tyrone Washington 2019 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

Ulnar Collateral Ligament Reconstruction With Traditional Docking Compared To Novel Surgical Techniques, Kayley D. Guy, Brendon P. Mcdermott, Kaitlin Gallagher, Tyrone Washington

Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses

Background: Ulnar Collateral Ligament Reconstruction (UCLR) is a surgical procedure on one of the main ligaments that provides normal stability for the elbow joint against excessive valgus stress. Damage to this ligament is common in athletes performing overhead throwing activities, primarily baseball players, due to excessive valgus stress during the throwing motion. The most common form of treatment for this type of injury is reconstructive surgery of the ligament, especially if athletes wish to return to sport participation. This type of surgery is extremely invasive and requires extensive post-operative rehabilitation in order to facilitate return to play. To date, many ...

Identifying The Risk Factors To Postpartum Depression, Jannica Bondoc Santos 2019 Dominican University of California

Identifying The Risk Factors To Postpartum Depression, Jannica Bondoc Santos

Senior Theses and Capstone Projects

A woman’s life instantly changes after the birth of their child. Furthermore, culture influences the stigma that a mother is the primary caregiver of their children and are accountable for the health and upbringing of the child. Giving birth to a baby and taking up the responsibility of another human life is a great impact in a female’s existence. In addition to the new tasks that come with motherhood, women are also challenged to cope with their emotional and mental state after giving birth. The most chronic mental illness that can develop after labor is postpartum depression (PPD ...

Flowers Or Flora?: Understanding The Effects Of Probiotics On Depression, Nicole Collopy 2019 Dominican University of California

Flowers Or Flora?: Understanding The Effects Of Probiotics On Depression, Nicole Collopy

Senior Theses and Capstone Projects

The human gut is populated with hundreds of types of bacteria and fungi. In North America, both intestinal and mood disorders are prevalent, presenting health problems that challenge health care professionals and patients alike. A scholarly literature review was conducted to explore this important relationship.

The investigation of the literature revealed that there is an association between gut health disorders and mood disorders, mainly anxiety and depression. This is due to bi-directionality between the brain-gut pathways, meaning that gastrointestinal health may have an effect on mental health and vice versa.

This connection between gut and mood can have substantial implications ...

The Effectiveness And Effects Of Alcohol Regulation: Evidence From India, Dara Lee Luca, Emily Owens, Gunjan Sharma 2019 University of California

The Effectiveness And Effects Of Alcohol Regulation: Evidence From India, Dara Lee Luca, Emily Owens, Gunjan Sharma

WCBE Faculty Publications

We provide quasi-experimental evidence on the effects of alcohol regulation on alcohol consumption and associated public health outcomes using detailed individual level and aggregate data from India, where state-level laws regulating the minimum legal drinking age generate substantial variation in the availability of commercially produced alcohol across people of different ages. We find that despite significant law evasion, men who are legally allowed to drink are substantially more likely to consume alcohol. Further, men who are legally allowed to drink are significantly more likely to commit violence against their partners, suggesting a causal channel between alcohol consumption and domestic violence ...

Use Of Processing Fluid Samples For Longitudinal Monitoring Of Prrs Virus In Herds Undergoing Virus Elimination, Giovani Trevisan, Eva Jablonski, Jose Angulo, Will A. Lopez, Daniel C. L. Linhares

Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine Publications

This was an observational study that prospectively followed 29 breeding herds for 65 weeks in the U.S.A. that became infected with porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSv). The herds operated in a four-week batch farrowing system and adopted a load-close-expose strategy using a modified-live virus vaccine to achieve PRRSv stability. The purpose of this study was to describe time to stability (TTS) based on RT-qPCR testing for PRRSv RNA on processing fluid samples in herds undergoing PRRSv elimination, after implementing herd closure and mass exposure to a PRRS modified-live virus (MLV) vaccine. For the purpose of this ...
