Content Analysis: Media Representation Of Infant-Feeding Practices Of Adolescent Mothers, Mary Elizabeth Pate-Bennett

Masters Theses

Background: The American Academy of Pediatrics considers breastfeeding to be the optimal form of infant nutrition 1,2 and Healthy People 2020 objectives target increasing breastfeeding rates 3. Though national rates have improved, those among several subgroups have not. Adolescent mothers initiate breastfeeding only 58% of the time, which is lower than the national objective of 81.9%3. Research focusing on other health behaviors indicates that media may play an important role in developing these behaviors in adolescents. However, knowledge of media-influences on infant-feeding decisions and attitudes among adolescents is insufficient.

Objective: The objective of this study was to …

Eating Pathology, Supplement Use, And Nutrition Knowledge In Collegiate Athletes, Holly Beth Lapota 2013 University of Nevada, Las Vegas

Eating Pathology, Supplement Use, And Nutrition Knowledge In Collegiate Athletes, Holly Beth Lapota

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Eating pathology (e.g., body dissatisfaction, binge eating, purging, restrictive eating) and substance use (e.g., dietary supplements, legal and illegal drugs) proliferate university settings in the United States. Within university settings, athletes appear to be at particularly high risk for eating pathology and supplement use due to the external pressures to be attractive, the need to perform at optimal levels, and the specific characteristics of sports in which they participate. Furthermore, the degree to which athletes understand what constitutes healthy eating and exercise habits is understudied and may relate to eating pathology and supplement use. To build on existing research, the …

Holocarboxylase Synthetase Represses Long Terminal Repeats Through Epigenetic Synergies Between Biotin And Methyl Donors, And Activates Immune Response By Catalyzing Biotinylation Of Heat Shock Protein 72, Jing Xue

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Holocarboxylase synthetase (HLCS) is the sole human protein biotin ligase in the human proteome. Other than its role as a coenzyme to the five carboxylases in intermediary metabolism, HLCS and biotin are involved in epigenetic gene regulation and immune response. Previously, it was shown that (1) HLCS physically interacts with histone methyl transferase EHMT-1 which creates histone H3 lysine 9 methylation (H3K9me) marks and biotinylates lysine (K) 161 in EHMT-1, thereby strenghtening the HLCS/EHMT-1 interaction; (2) biotin depletion and HLCS knockdown cause a loss of H3K9me marks leading to de-repression of long terminal repeats (LTRs) and chromosomal abnormalities; and (3) …

Molecular Mechanisms Underlying The Early Life Programming Of The Liver, Gurjeev Sohi 2013 The University of Western Ontario

Molecular Mechanisms Underlying The Early Life Programming Of The Liver, Gurjeev Sohi

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Clinical studies have demonstrated that intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) offspring, faced with a nutritional mismatch postpartum, have an increased risk of developing the metabolic syndrome. The maternal protein restriction (MPR) rat model has been extensively studied to investigate the adverse effects of a nutritional mismatch in postnatal life of IUGR offspring. Previous studies have demonstrated that MPR leads to impaired function of the liver, an important metabolic organ. However the underlying mechanisms which predispose these offspring to the metabolic syndrome remain elusive. In the following studies, low protein diet during pregnancy and lactation led to IUGR offspring with decreased liver …

Pancreatic Β-Cell Death In Response To Pro-Inflammatory Cytokines Is Distinct From Genuine Apoptosis, J. Jason Collier, Susan J. Burke, Mary E. Eisenhauer, Danhong Lu, Renee C. Sapp, Carlie J. Frydman, Shawn R. Campagna

Nutrition Publications and Other Works

A reduction in functional β-cell mass leads to both major forms of diabetes; pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin-1beta (IL-1β) and gamma-interferon (γ-IFN), activate signaling pathways that direct pancreatic β-cell death and dysfunction. However, the molecular mechanism of β-cell death in this context is not well understood. In this report, we tested the hypothesis that individual cellular death pathways display characteristic phenotypes that allow them to be distinguished by the precise biochemical and metabolic responses that occur during stimulus-specific initiation. Using 832/13 and INS-1E rat insulinoma cells and isolated rat islets, we provide evidence that apoptosis is unlikely to be the …

The Putative Role Of Resveratrol In Sirt-1 Mediated Modulation Of The Vitamin D Pathway, Angelika Dampf Stone, Shane F. Batie, G. Kerr Whitfield, Mark R. Haussler, Peter W. Jurutka 2013 Arizona State University

The Putative Role Of Resveratrol In Sirt-1 Mediated Modulation Of The Vitamin D Pathway, Angelika Dampf Stone, Shane F. Batie, G. Kerr Whitfield, Mark R. Haussler, Peter W. Jurutka

American Association for the Advancement of Science Pacific Conference

The nuclear vitamin D receptor (VDR) modulates gene transcription in 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25D) target tissues such as kidney, colon, and bone. The 1,25D hormone is derived from vitamin D in the skin or from the diet, and binds to and activates the VDR. We have previously shown that resveratrol, an antioxidant found in the skin of red grapes, has the ability to activate the VDR signaling pathway. Moreover, cells treated with both resveratrol and 1,25D resulted in an additive or even synergistic stimulation of VDR-mediated transcription compared to cells treated with 1,25D alone. Based on these initial results, experiments were …
