Bat Activity On West Virginia Mined Lands Restored Via The Forestry Reclamation Approach, Briana C. Snyder 2022 University of Kentucky

Bat Activity On West Virginia Mined Lands Restored Via The Forestry Reclamation Approach, Briana C. Snyder

Theses and Dissertations--Forestry and Natural Resources

The Forestry Reclamation Approach (FRA) is a practical guide to reforesting surface mined lands. Bats, as a unique group of species with declining populations, could benefit from this reforestation. In order to determine if the FRA is providing suitable bat foraging habitat, I surveyed bat activity at created depressional wetlands on 1-year old and 8-year old FRA restored lands (FRA1; FRA8), as well as at naturally formed wetlands in regenerating forest on traditionally reclaimed mined land (~40 years old; REGEN) and wetlands in mature forest not previously mined (MAT). I passively recorded echolocation calls for 12 nights across sixteen sites …

Nebraska Invasive Species Program

The purpose of the weed watch list is to collect data on the distribution of invasive plants found in various Nebraska counties. Counties were divided up into ‘ecoregions’ based on the Nebraska Game & Parks Commission’s Legacy Plan (map of regions below). The plants in the watch list have been identified based on their invasiveness in surrounding states and their increasing range in Nebraska. Data collected on watch list plant species distribution has been used to support the listing or delisting of noxious weeds. Plant species in the weed watch list are categorized based on early detection and rapid response …

Drought Responses Across Diverse Conifer Species, Habitats, And Competitive Gradients In Northern California, Gabriel J. Roletti 2022 CNRS

Drought Responses Across Diverse Conifer Species, Habitats, And Competitive Gradients In Northern California, Gabriel J. Roletti

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Frequent and intense drought events are rapidly altering stand dynamics in western North American forests. Climate, competition, and site characteristics can affect the growth responses of individual trees to drought stress. The ecological and geographical diversity of northern California provides a unique opportunity to measure these responses across species, habitat types, and levels of competitive pressure. This study used dendrochronological techniques and linear mixed-effects models to assess growth responses to drought in four montane and two coastal conifer species across 54 study sites (nine sites per species and 540 trees total) in northern California. Growth was evaluated from 2002-2018 and …

The Future Of The Big Sagebrush Ecosystem: Plant Community Response To Grazing, Wildfire, And Invasive Annual Grass In A Changing Climate, Margaret Eleanor England 2022 Marshall University

The Future Of The Big Sagebrush Ecosystem: Plant Community Response To Grazing, Wildfire, And Invasive Annual Grass In A Changing Climate, Margaret Eleanor England

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Climate change is increasingly affecting the plant communities across the world. In the Western United States, these changes are affecting plant communities and their risk of invasive species, as well as the frequency and severity of wildfire. Big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata Nutt.) ecosystems of the Western United States are facing threats of increasingly frequent wildfire and invasion of the annual grass cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum L.), which may be exacerbated by global climate change. Past studies have found cheatgrass to exhibit a positive feedback loop with wildfire, and climate change is expected to facilitate expansion of the cheatgrass …

Journal of Public Affairs and Development

Agricultural credit programs provide opportunities for farmers to acquire the necessary farm inputs and apply appropriate technologies. However, it remains a challenge for farmers to use the credit for what it was intended for. This study aimed to measure the factors affecting the utilization of borrowed capital of 233 randomly selected rice farmers from the province of Albay using binary logit as its analytical procedure. The factors influencing the utilization of borrowed capital are the type of the optimization behavior of the farmers, sex, family size, and farm size. The output maximizers and the male farmers have a higher probability …

Impact Of Drought Stress On Oak Stomatal Size And Density At Thompson Farm, Nh, Emily Chen 2022 University of New Hampshire, Durham

Impact Of Drought Stress On Oak Stomatal Size And Density At Thompson Farm, Nh, Emily Chen

Honors Theses and Capstones

Global climate change is likely to affect northeastern U.S. forests by increasing the frequency and severity of drought events. Historically, droughts rarely occurred in this region, so native tree species are not well-adapted to extreme moisture stress. In the future, the changing climate will likely cause unprecedented levels of low water availability which may have implications on future forest composition. It is hypothesized that trees can respond to these environmental changes by altering their functional traits, also referred to as phenotypic plasticity; for example, by producing leaves with fewer and smaller stomata.

To determine the capacity to which oak trees …

Drivers And Controls On Soil Carbon Storage In Temperate Forest Soils, Adam Noel 2022 University of Vermont

Drivers And Controls On Soil Carbon Storage In Temperate Forest Soils, Adam Noel

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Elevated atmospheric CO2 levels pose a threat the global climate stability but large amounts of carbon can be held within soils worldwide. Forests function to capture carbon and eventually, through litter inputs and decomposition, add this carbon to soil systems. This process is driven by climate, landscape conditions, forest and soil characteristics, that have complex interactions with one another across spatial scales. In this dissertation, I examine drivers of carbon contributions to the mineral soil, via litter decomposition and forest floor carbon pools, and how these contributions vary with forest composition and soil conditions. First, using data from a 10-year …

Investigating Seed Maturation And Mortality: A Mechanism For Post-Fire Regeneration In Non-Serotinous Conifers, Madeleine A. Lopez 2022 Cal Poly Humboldt

Investigating Seed Maturation And Mortality: A Mechanism For Post-Fire Regeneration In Non-Serotinous Conifers, Madeleine A. Lopez

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Climate warming and associated dry conditions are contributing to increased fire frequency, severity, and size, for many regions in western North America. These changes in fire activity have prompted concern over the long-term persistence of some conifer species, specifically those not adapted to withstand high-severity fire. However, regeneration of non-serotinous conifer species is possible if the timing of fire occurs following seed maturation, and within a heat range that seeds can withstand, in a regenerative mechanism termed “facultative serotiny.” To address this mechanism, I determined the timing of conifer seed maturation using viability testing for four California conifer species: ponderosa …

Eight-Year Regeneration Response To Gap-Based Irregular Shelterwood Practices In Oak Dominated Stands Near Berea, Kentucky, Brooke Elizabeth Gauthier

Theses and Dissertations--Forestry and Natural Resources

This research examined regeneration dynamics following gap-based irregular shelterwood practices in intermediate productivity oak (Quercus)-dominated stands located in Berea College Forest, Berea, KY, USA. Established in 2012, the study includes 12 experiment units comprising a circular harvest gap (30 m radius) and a matrix zone delineated around the circumference of the gap, which extended 30 m from the gap edge into the adjacent forest. A midstory removal treatment was performed within six of the experiment units’ matrices, while six matrices were left untreated (control). Belt transects extending 60 m from gap center to the end of the matrix zone were …

Coupled Structure-Function Responses To Disturbance: High Structural Complexity Resistance Supports Primary Production Resistance, Kerstin M. Niedermaier 2022 Virginia Commonwealth University

Coupled Structure-Function Responses To Disturbance: High Structural Complexity Resistance Supports Primary Production Resistance, Kerstin M. Niedermaier

Theses and Dissertations

The capacity of forests to resist structural change and retain material legacies–the biotic and abiotic resources that persist through disturbance–is crucial to sustaining ecosystem functioning after disturbance. However, the role of forest structure as both a material legacy and feature supporting carbon (C) cycling stability following disturbance has not been widely investigated. We used a large-scale disturbance manipulation to ask whether LiDAR-derived canopy structures as material legacies drive 3-year responses of NPP to a range of disturbance severity levels. As part of the Forest Resilience Threshold Experiment (FoRTE) in northern Michigan, USA we simulated phloem-disrupting disturbances at a range of …

Public Procurement Practices And Policies: Implications For Public Research And Development In The Philippines, Nelson Jose Vincent B. Querijero, Rhea L. Gumasing, Arlene C. Gutierrez, Ruth Anne T. Ruelos, Charina Krissel D. Tingson

Journal of Public Affairs and Development

This study examines procurement practices and policies that hinder or facilitate public research and development. An online survey and interviews with key informants in 44 research development institutions (RDIs) in the Philippines were conducted. Participants include Project Leaders, members of the Bids and Awards Committee (BAC), the BAC secretariat, chief accountants, technical working groups, and suppliers. The results show that some procurement policies, workflows, and capacities of the procuring entities contribute to procurement delays. A lack of qualified or suitable suppliers and a limited market of highly specialized and scientific equipment are also factors affecting procurement efficiency. It is recommended …

Ecological Effects Of Prescribed Burning, Mechanical Cutting, And Post-Treatment Wildfire For Restoration Of Pinus Albicaulis, Enzo Paolo Martelli Moya 2022 University of Montana, Missoula

Ecological Effects Of Prescribed Burning, Mechanical Cutting, And Post-Treatment Wildfire For Restoration Of Pinus Albicaulis, Enzo Paolo Martelli Moya

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The field of ecological restoration is growing rapidly, increasing the need for reliable and generalizable information on the impacts of management interventions aimed to be restorative. Prescribed burning and mechanical cutting have been proposed as primary strategies for restoration. However, there is limited information on their efficacy and effects in subalpine forest types, suggesting that monitoring to inform adaptive management is a priority need. I used data from a 15-year, replicated before-after-control-impact (BACI) study on Pinus albicaulis (whitebark pine) restoration to assess the ecological effects of prescribed burning and mechanical cutting, with and without subsequent unplanned wildfire, as well as …
