Biological Sciences Open Textbooks
2nd Edition: Revised by Kalina Manoylov, Allison Rick VandeVoort, Christine Mutiti, Samuel Mutiti and Donna Bennett in 2017.
This course uses the basic principles of biology and earth science as a context for understanding environmental policies and resource management practices. Our planet is facing unprecedented environmental challenges, from oil spills to global climate change. In ENSC 1000, you will learn about the science behind these problems; preparing you to make an informed, invaluable contribution to Earth’s future. I hope that each of you is engaged by the material presented and participates fully in the search for, acquisition ...

Love: A Biological, Psychological And Philosophical Study, University of Rhode Island
Love: A Biological, Psychological And Philosophical Study, Heather M. Chapman
Senior Honors Projects
The concept of love has been an eternally elusive subject. It is a definition and meaning that philosophers, psychologists, and biologists have been seeking since the beginning of time. Wars have been waged and fought over it, while friendships have been initiated and have ended because of this idea. But what exactly is love, and why is it important to define this enigma?
In order to help define this idea of love, several books and numerous research articles were consulted, and interviews were conducted with faculty of The University of Rhode Island. Dr. Nasser Zawia was interviewed, in order to ...
Human Anatomy And Physiology Preparatory Course, CUNY Bronx Community College
Human Anatomy And Physiology Preparatory Course, Carlos Liachovitzky
Open Educational Resources
The overall purpose of this preparatory course textbook is to help students familiarize with some terms and some basic concepts they will find later in the Human Anatomy and Physiology I course.
The organization and functioning of the human organism generally is discussed in terms of different levels of increasing complexity, from the smallest building blocks to the entire body. This Anatomy and Physiology preparatory course covers the foundations on the chemical level, and a basic introduction to cellular level, organ level, and organ system levels. There is also an introduction to homeostasis at the beginning.
Black Soldier Fly Larvae Manual, University of Massachusetts Amherst
Black Soldier Fly Larvae Manual, Haeree H. Park
This manual is a resource for fisheries, hatcheries, and farms of all types that wish to exercise a sustainable management system utilizing black soldier fly larvae through the minimization of waste. Although black soldier fly larvae can be fed to small livestock such as chickens and rodents, this project and manual are tailored specifically to freshwater fish in hopes of closing the significant gap and inefficiencies of fish management and subsequent waste throughout the New England coastal area. There is an evident opportunity to harness black soldier fly larvae’s extraordinary bioconversion of organic matter that can lead to not ...

Stochastic Evolutionary Game Dynamics, University of Pennsylvania
Stochastic Evolutionary Game Dynamics, Dean Foster, Peyton Young
The concept of an evolutionary stable strategy (ESS) is a useful tool for studying the dynamics of natural selection. One of its limitations, however, is that it does not capture the notion of long-run stability when the system is subjected to stochastic effects. We define the concept of stability in a stochastic dynamical system, and show that it differs from both the traditional ESS and the concept of an attractor in a dynamical system. The stochastically stable set may be computed analytically using recent advances in potential theory.
The Effect Of Concentration Of Co2 On The Average Rate Of Photosynthesis In Spinach Leaf Disks, Heathwood Hall Episcopal School, Columbia, SC
The Effect Of Concentration Of Co2 On The Average Rate Of Photosynthesis In Spinach Leaf Disks, Amelia Robinson-Brown
Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science
The purpose of this experiment was to determine the effect of carbon dioxide concentration on the rate of photosynthesis in spinach leaves. Small circular disks were cut out of the spinach leaves using a standard hole puncher. Then solutions of differing concentrations of carbon dioxide, 0.2%, 0.4%, 0.6%, 0.8%, and 1.0%, were all prepared, and each solution was spread equally among five cups. There was also a control solution that contained only water. Any gases within the leaves were then sucked with a syringe, using a specific technique to create a vacuum. For each solution ...
Termite Trail-Following Behavior Elicited By Ballpoint Pen Ink, Arcadia University
Termite Trail-Following Behavior Elicited By Ballpoint Pen Ink, Ariel M. Kershner
Faculty Curated Undergraduate Works
Termite trail-following behavior occurs because of pheromones produced in the sternal gland of the termites and secreted when the sternal gland touches a substance. 2-phenoxyethanol, a chemical found in ballpoint pen ink, is structurally similar to the trail-following pheromones and causes the termites to respond with trail-following behavior. This study investigated the difference in trail-following behavior between ballpoint pen ink, which contains 2-phenoxyethanol, and Sharpie ink, which does not contain 2-phenoxyethanol. The termites were placed on a square drawn with either ballpoint pen ink or Sharpie pen ink. Time spent on each of the squares was measured. We predicted that ...
The Impacts Of Climate Change In Coastal Marine Systems, University of California - Davis
The Impacts Of Climate Change In Coastal Marine Systems, Christopher D.G. Harley, A. Randall Hughes, Kristin M. Hultgren, Benjamin G. Miner, Cascade J.B. Sorte, Carol S. Thornber, Laura F. Rodriguez, Lars Tomanek, Susan L. Williams
Anthropogenically induced global climate change has profound implications for marine ecosystems and the economic and social systems that depend upon them. The relationship between temperature and individual performance is reasonably well understood, and much climate-related research has focused on potential shifts in distribution and abundance driven directly by temperature. However, recent work has revealed that both abiotic changes and biological responses in the ocean will be substantially more complex. For example, changes in ocean chemistry may be more important than changes in temperature for the performance and survival of many organisms. Ocean circulation, which drives larval transport, will also change ...
