Prior research has indicated that the incorporation of computer-based peer review into writing instruction increases student engagement, improves student performance, and increases student perceptions of self-efficacy. This study used a quasi-experimental untreated control group design to examine the impact of computer-based peer review on student performance and perceived self-efficacy in an undergraduate agricultural graphic design course. The impact of participation in computer-based peer review on performance scores was investigated using a MANOVA. After two rounds of peer review, students improved their overall course performance by one-half letter grade. The creation and educational impact of a reciprocal travel exchange program for student groups in horticulture and allied sciences between Iowa State University (ISU) and the University of Costa Rica (UCR) are described. The program, called the “Intercambio,” (“exchange,” in English), has facilitated group travel for 10- to 12-day periods to farms and agricultural research centers in the host country annually since 1999. The article explores how the Intercambio began and factors that have helped to sustain it, to provide ideas for educators interested in initiating similar exchanges. Identifying Challenges Pre-Service Teachers Encountered When Teaching Curriculum For Agricultural Science Education (Case) Coursework During Student Teaching, Trent Wells, Mark S. Hainline, Scott W. Smalley
Student teaching is the capstone experience in an agricultural teacher preparation program (Edgar, Roberts, & Murphy, 2011). During student teaching, pre-service teachers work with cooperating teachers to learn to effectively deliver instruction (Feiman-Nemser & Buchmann, 1987) on topics such as agriscience, agricultural mechanics, horticultural science, and so forth, to secondary students. School-based agricultural education (SBAE) also includes instruction in applied academic content (Stubbs & Myers, 2015). Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education (CASE) has emerged in recent years to provide engaging, academically-reinforced coursework for SBAE teachers and students across the United States (CASE, n.d.a). Thus, it is reasonable to expect pre-service teachers may be responsible for teaching CASE coursework at their student teaching placement sites. We sought to identify challenges that pre-service teachers may encounter when teaching CASE coursework. Through two face-to-face focus group interviews conducted at both the mid-semester and end-of-semester student teacher meetings, we identified three primary themes: 1) accessibility to resources; 2) influence of cooperating teachers; and 3) applicability of coursework based on local needs. We concluded these pre-service teachers encountered both positive and negative experiences related to teaching CASE coursework and recommended that pre-service teachers be adequately prepared to engage in CASE coursework prior to student teaching.

Educational campaigns are more complicated when members of our audiences hold scientific misconceptions related to new technologies. Our prairie strips research and education team produced a brief, focused video aimed to dispel a misconception related to the effect of prairie strip plants' roots on agricultural drain tiles in the Midwest. Our "Field Tile Investigation" video was based on the conceptual change framework from science education and featured a discrepant event. The goal was to move farmers, landowners, and their advisors to an understanding of prairie strips that was more compatible with the scientific standard.

The goal of this workshop was to demonstrate existing institution research and strategically propel further PLF development and industry adoption. The purpose of this study was to determine the socio-ecological influences on dry grain pulse consumption (beans, peas, lentils, chickpeas) among low-socioeconomic women in Iowa. Seven focus groups were conducted, with 36 women who qualified for income-based federal assistance. Data were collected from October 2017 to January 2018. Participants completed a survey that gathered individual demographics, assessed perceptions of dry grain pulses, and level of food security. Fifty-eight percent of the women were non-Hispanic white, and 39% were African American, all with an average age of 34.7 years. A quality program is the ultimate goal for many secondary agricultural education programs. To ensure quality agricultural education programs, standards were established to measure the extent agricultural education programs in Iowa were implementing standards. Utilizing Ajzen’s Theory of Planned Behavior, researchers incorporated the Iowa Council on Agricultural Education standards as an evaluation tool. The purpose of this quantitative study was to describe the people and factors that influenced new students’ decisions to attend the colleges of agriculture at two Midwestern land grant universities. Athletics was identified as the most common pre-collegiate activity. Students identified their parent as the most influential person in selecting their college. The top factor which influenced students' college decision was pursuing a career that interested them. The findings from this study can guide recruitment efforts at land-grant universities by allowing institutions to be more intentional with their recruitment efforts. Colleges aim to increase student achievement, which has been linked to motivation and engagement, as well as increase global partnerships. There is also an increasing demand from students for international programs (IPs) that prepare them to be global citizens. This study aimed to compare student motivation for continuing college and student engagement in the classroom before and after an IP.
