With Love, ; An Interdisciplinary And Intersectional Look At Why Creativity Is Essential, Theo Starr Gardner

Whittier Scholars Program

My Whittier Scholars Program self-designed major, Teaching Creativity, is a mixture of Art, Literature, and Education classes. My research and praxis classes have been focused on the ‘how?’s and 'why?’s of creativity, so it felt only right that my project should be a constructivist, generative project. The project I have been working on throughout my time at Whittier, and that has just fully come to fruition on April 11th, 2024, was a solo art gallery/open mic event entitled ‘With Love,’. With Love, was conceptually inspired by the research I’ve conducted on creativity and creative arts education over the past few …

Hospitality Highway Career Fair: An Exploratory Study, Lilly Miller

Human Nutrition and Hospitality Management Undergraduate Honors Theses

The goal of this creative project is to conduct research on career fairs and hospitality events to successfully host the first ever Hospitality Career Fair at the University of Arkansas. The lack of career advancement opportunities on the campus for hospitality management students continued to increase despite the rapidly growing industry across the community, so the creation of the career fair would allow improvement for the students and the companies. With a creative project, it allows more creativity and research to develop the overall plan for the event.

The project studies hospitality career events hosted at other universities to gain …

Exploring The Connection Between Self-Efficacy And Preparedness Among First-Year College Students, Marianne Hale 2024 Utah State University

Exploring The Connection Between Self-Efficacy And Preparedness Among First-Year College Students, Marianne Hale

All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present

The goal of the American education system is to prepare students for college. I wondered, “Do students feel ready?” That question led me to investigate the literature on the development, implementation, and effectiveness of our current standards. The gap I found was that the standards do not address an important aspect of student achievement, that of student self-efficacy. Self-efficacy in writing helps students have the confidence to engage in the task of writing, regardless of the situation. I focused my study of student writing self-efficacy on one English 1010 class. I administered a self-efficacy evaluation in class and conducted a …

English Language Learning At Tertiary Level In A Central Mexican Public University: A Case Study, Irasema Mora-Pablo, Edgar Emmanuell Garcia-Ponce

Higher Learning Research Communications

Objective: Our objective was to examine the perceptions regarding the teaching and learning of English of students in 16 undergraduate programs at a state public university in Mexico.

Method: In our qualitative case study, participating students responded to queries about their experiences learning English at the university, as well as their educational aspirations upon completion of their university studies.

Results: Despite their relevance to language immersion and competency, students struggle to combine prior experiences with current learning. Given Mexico’s English education system and past national initiatives, most participants say they still speak basic English. It is also clear that the …

“I Thought I Knew”: Teaching Graduate Students New Ways Of Understanding Meanings Of Diverse Social Identities, Maria S. Johnson 2024 Black Women and Girls Fund

“I Thought I Knew”: Teaching Graduate Students New Ways Of Understanding Meanings Of Diverse Social Identities, Maria S. Johnson

Feminist Pedagogy

Instructors should not assume that graduate students understand meanings of terms for various social identities. In this article, I highlight a teaching activity I created titled, “What’s in a name?” that requires graduate students to research historical and contemporary uses of various racial, ethnic, gender, sexuality, and immigration terms. The assignment helps graduate students develop inclusive vocabulary and deepen their understanding of their positionality. It also supports braver classroom contexts for students and instructors. The assignment is best facilitated by instructors informed of diverse social identities, open to difficult conversations, and aware of the influence of their own social identities …

Teachers' Experiences Of Using Play And Al's Pals To Teach Socio-Emotional Skills Through Coaching Support Models, Deborah Tamakloe, Elizabeth Powers, Alisa Landis, Lori Mccracken

Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning

Interactive teaching strategies provide opportunities for engaging children in discussing difficult concepts such as socio-emotional wellbeing and wide range of ideas about their social and personal lives. However, few studies have explored preschool teachers’ efficacy of using coaching through ‘Play and puppetry programs as approaches to developing children’s emotional regulation, socio-emotional learning and wellbeing. This paper reports on a “Labyrinth Project” aimed to gain in-depth understandings of preschool teachers’ experiences and perspectives pertaining to their efficacy of using play and puppetry as tools to promote children’s emotional learning and development. The results showed that despite early challenges with the use …

2024 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Poster Presentations

Insulin, naturally produced in the human body, is used in the treatment of diabetic patients. It is often given incorrectly resulting in a medication error. Around one-third of medication errors resulting in death within 48 hours involve insulin therapy. Insulin is expensive and many patients cannot afford the insulin they need which results in underdosing. Improper administration of insulin was observed during a clinical rotation at a large, urban teaching hospital. There is a need for evidence-based research to identify methods of improved insulin use. A thorough literature review was done on the topic of insulin administration. Common themes that …

BeetElite is a beet root extract product from the Human-n brand that has become widely popular among endurance athletes over the past few years. Dietary nitrates and nitrites are the active ingredients in the supplemental drink mix. Although there is research cited on the company's website, it is limited to one study that conducted a HIIT test on stationary bikes. To further test the company's claims on improved endurance and began proving its effectiveness with running, we created a treadmill test. Our testing is intended to supplement other testing that has been done and provide a basis for future tests …

Reproductive Cycle Of The Highland Shiner (Notropis Micropteryx) In Rockcastle County, Kentucky, Zoe Baker, Caitlyn Senters, David J. Eisenhour

2024 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Poster Presentations

The Highland Shiner, Notropis micropteryx, is a minnow species common in the Green, Cumberland, and Tennessee river drainages and usually inhabits rocky riffles (Eisenhour and Eisenhour 2004). Despite the Highland Shiner's prevalence in this area, little published information exists describing the life history of this minnow species. Although N micropteryx is a small fish, attention must be given to its biology, as changes in its abundance are likely to affect other members of its aquatic community. Population and life cycle fluctuations can also be a reliable indicator of greater ecosystem health.

Predicting The Reactions Of Cs2 ,Ocs, And Co2 With Group Iv And Group Vi Transition Metal Oxides, Marissa Blair, David A. Dixon, Zachary R. Lee

2024 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Poster Presentations

Overview:

• Electronic structure methods are being used to study the addition of CS2. OCS and CO2 to Group IV (MO2)n and Group VI (MO3)n (n = 1, 2, 3) nanoclusters, beginning with the MO2 and MO3 monomers according to a "bottom-up" approach.

• Physisorption is a process in which molecules bind through Van der Waals interactions. The enthalpies of these reactions are rather low, and these interactions are usually favored at lower temperatures.

• Chemisorption is adsorption in which chemical bonds are broken and/or formed therefore, an entirely new chemical species is formed.

• CS2 OCS and CO2 absorbed …

Growth And Reproduction Of The Popeye Shiner (Notropis Ariommus) In The Rockcastle River, Kentucky, Shelbie Black, Jared Vise, David J. Eisenhour

2024 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Poster Presentations

The Popeye Shiner (Notropis ariommus) occupies gravel runs and flowing pools of clear creeks and small rivers throughout the Ohio River basin, but has declined in many areas. The Popeye Shiner is a small silvery minnow with characteristically large eyes (Figure 1). Despite being a candidate for the endangered species list (Department of the Interior, 2011 ), little life-history data have been published, which are needed to make conservation management decisions.

Notropis ariommus is categorized by the American Fisheries Society as a vulnerable minnow species (Warren et al, 2000). These fishes were previously known from Alabama, Pennsylvania, and Indiana, but …
