A Dual Approach To Evaluating The Physical And Perceptual Impact Of Exterior Lighting Renovations On Denver's Historic 16th Street Mall, Shelby White

Civil Engineering Graduate Theses & Dissertations

Denver's 16th Street Mall was first introduced as the retail and commercial heart of the city in the 1980’s through the distinctive design of I.M. Pei and Partners. However, in recent years, the need for a revitalization through an ambitious urban renewal plan has become apparent as years of "wear and tear" combined with rapid urban growth and development have begun to take a toll on the beloved mall. In recent years, the City of Denver has allocated funds to renovate this Central Denver corridor, in an effort at revitalizing this urban area. One of the central ...

Expanding The Role Of Design: Developing Holistic Food Systems, Jasmine Singh Jan 2015

Expanding The Role Of Design: Developing Holistic Food Systems, Jasmine Singh

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Post World War II, technological and political factors prioritized economic efficiency in food production, distribution and access. Although this currently delivers benefits such as the doubling of caloric production and food availability despite geographic constraints, the food system is becoming implicated both directly and indirectly with a host of environmental and social issues.

This thesis re-frames food system issues as "wicked problems" (Buchanan, 1992, 15) and develops a framework of design tactics . The framework is used as a matrix for analyzing past and current theory and practice based design approaches that engage the food system and two university food systems ...

The Effect Of Airport Servicescape Features On Traveler Anxiety And Enjoyment, Vanja Bogicevic

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The physical attributes of the service setting are critical differentiators among service providers that significantly influence customers' emotional responses. Following the changes in the airport industry and addressing the gap in the existing research, this study aims to investigate the relationship between physical servicescape elements, emotional responses of enjoyment and anxiety and word-of-mouth in the context of airport environment.

Aesthetically Designed Maps: Development And Perception, Catherine Wang Mar 2014

Aesthetically Designed Maps: Development And Perception, Catherine Wang

Graphic Communication

This research explored the creative element of subway map creation in light of its effectiveness. Printed subway maps, used often for metropolitan cities and areas, are limited in physical dimension and scale, carrying minimal information. The New York, San Francisco Bay Area, Tokyo, Paris, London and Moscow subway maps highlight similar design and abstraction that fulfill the basic necessary elements for subway patrons. Over the years since the first metro map for each city was created, maps have become more simplified by removing physical land features and reference points to make way for expanding and new subway lines, stations, and ...

Green Roof Biodiversity In Design: Influence Of Local And Contextual Attributes On Bird Usage, Henry Narigon Jan 2013

Green Roof Biodiversity In Design: Influence Of Local And Contextual Attributes On Bird Usage, Henry Narigon

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This purpose of this research is to identify how species of birds use urban green roofs in Iowa with the intent to eventually develop a set of guidelines for optimizing habitat on green roofs. Ten green roofs were observed for bird usage five times each between May to August, 2013 for a total of fifty observations. Birds were identified by species and their behavior was recorded during the duration of the observations. Data shows that birds use green roofs for a number of uses including foraging and gathering nest material. Bird diversity data was then compared with both green roof ...

Opportunities And Challenges Of Citywide Main Street Programs: Examining The Urban Environment, Coordinating Structures And Political Realities In The Application Of The Four Point Approach, Ryan Rinn

Theses and Dissertations

The Main Street Four Point Approach to commercial revitalization has been applied successfully in thousands of communities across the U.S. Starting in 1995, citywide coordinated programs began applying the balanced points of organization, design, economic restructuring and promotion to urban environments. This thesis focuses on the opportunities and challenges present in five citywide Main Street programs in Boston, Baltimore, Washington D.C., Orlando and Portland through quantitative inquiry and interviews with program administrators. This thesis discusses density, capacity, volunteerism, vernacular culture, and politics as emergent themes of the urban application of the Main Street Approach and recommends expanding the ...

Feng Shui And Neighborhood Development, Kevin Allen Walters Jan 2006

Feng Shui And Neighborhood Development, Kevin Allen Walters

Theses and Dissertations

Planning is a rational process where we rely on training and our five senses, but not so much on our instincts. How can we reclaim this missing element and balance the rational with the intuitive? Feng Shui provides a method for enhancing the current planning process by evaluating the physical form through observation and management of the movement of ch'i energy. The Feng Shui Neighborhood Evaluation checklist, created in Excel, allows the planner to examine the form of a neighborhood to assess the quality of the ch'i. Individual ratings are input for each evaluation point within a category ...
