The purpose of this report is to create a shared definition and understanding of the bioscience industry across the state of Ohio. Bioscience is a relatively small industry, but it is growing both globally, nationally, and in Ohio. It is also linked to many other industries through its technologies, suppliers, and customers. This report will not only develop a deeper knowledge of the industry and its role in the economy, but we will suggest selected standards on how to study this industry and how to track its progress over time. This study describes the impact of GRC on the State of Ohio and on Northeast Ohio, where GRC is located. Northeast Ohio includes the eight counties in the Akron and Cleveland metropolitan areas.1 This report is an expansion and update of an earlier study, published in February 1996.2 As before, this study employs two methods to determine GRC’s influence on the state and local economies. The first method uses quantitative models to estimate the effect of GRC on the studied economies. The Ohio New Establishments Dynamics data (O-NED) is a new data set, developed by the College and Center. O-NED tracks employment and number of establishments for establishments that first started employing people between the 2nd quarter of 1997 and the 1st quarter of 2008. The report “New Establishment Dynamics: Business Formation and Survival Trends in Ohio” summarizes how trends in employment growth and establishment survivorship differ across sectors of the economy and various regions of Ohio. This new data set allows us to analyze the number of establishments born in a specific year called “birth cohort” and document their survival …

This report describes the findings from the third study of Dashboard indicators using the framework that was developed in the previous two studies. The framework resulted in a set of indicators that explains the dynamics of regional economic growth for large and mid-sized metropolitan areas in the United States. The objective of this study is to continue monitoring the performance of Northeast Ohio metropolitan areas over time and in comparison to other metropolitan areas across the United States.

This report was prepared for Ohio’s IT Alliance, a statewide network of six regional IT groups located throughout Ohio and headquartered in Dayton. The study was conducted by the Ohio Economic Development Information Network, better known as the ES202 Network. The ES202 Network is a statewide group of ten urban and rural universities that develops and maintains a database of employment, payroll, and establishments at the zip code level throughout Ohio. ES202 Network researchers are engaged in industry and labor force research that utilizes this unique database.

The objective of this study is to continue monitoring the economic performance of Northeast Ohio’s (NEO) metropolitan areas over time and in comparison to other metropolitan areas across the United States, particularly leading metropolitan areas and other large metro areas located in the Midwest. The study monitors economic conditions prior to the current recession. This fourth study of dashboard indicators describes the findings using the framework that was developed in previous studies. It uses the same four measures of economic growth and nine dashboard indicators and their underlying variables for 136 metropolitan areas with population between 300,000 and 3.5 million. …

This report describes trends in the high-tech sector in Northeast Ohio, focusing on the 2004-2006 time period. It is the first update to a baseline report released in February 2007 that analyzed trends between 2000 and 2005. This study follows the baseline report in that it examines the high-tech sector in Northeast Ohio from three perspectives — high-tech industries, high-tech occupations, and research and development activity. It assesses the strengths and weaknesses of high-tech industries in terms of employment, average wage, gross regional product (output), and productivity. This study is an update of two previous reports commissioned by the Northeast Ohio technology Coalition (NorTech) that examined the high-tech sector in Northeast Ohio (NEO). It focuses on two time periods: 2004-2007, the last recovery period, and 2006-2007, the latest one-year change.
