Unequal exposure to urban air pollution in North American cities continues to challenge even leaders in sustainability like Seattle. In 1994, the city developed the first US comprehensive plan for sustainability but after two decades, progress on air quality remains uneven. Some neighborhood residents endure more than double the rates of childhood asthma hospitalizations in the city and disproportionate air pollution exposures. Spatial Stigma And Health In Postindustrial Detroit, Louis Graham, Mark Padilla, William Lopez, Alexandra Stern, Jerry Peterson, Danya Keene

An emerging body of research suggests that those who reside in socially and economically
marginalized places may be marked by a stigma of place, referred to as
spatial stigma, which influences their sense of self, their daily experiences, and their
relations with outsiders. Researchers conducted 60 semistructured interviews at
partnering community-based organizations during summer 2011 with African
American and Latina/o, structurally disadvantaged youth of diverse gender and
sexual identities who were between 18 and 26 years of age residing in Detroit,

The story behind the move toward marijuana’s legality is a story of disruptive forces to the incumbent legal and physical landscape. It affects incumbent markets, incumbent places, the incumbent regulatory structure, and the legal system in general which must mediate the battles involving the push for relaxation of illegality and adaptation to accepting new marijuana-related land uses, against efforts toward entrenchment, resilience, and resistance to that disruption.
