Nebraska is a state that is not often viewed as affected significantly by mobility and migration. As a state, the net migration rate of 1.1 from 2015 to 2016 is fairly low compared to others like Florida (16.0) or Nevada (14.4). However, data from this report suggests that there is, in fact, substantial movement of people moving in and moving out; as well as pockets within the state where there is higher than average influx of both domestic and international migrants.

Landsat 5 multi-band spectral images from 1987 and 2007 were processed to create classes showing development density in each respective year. While an emphasis on housing submarkets has been proposed as a new construct for modeling housing prices, its use in analyzing residential segregation has been limited. This chapter explores spatial patterns and processes of residential segregation in St. Louis and Cincinnati using spatial analytical methods. Mapping Blacks by the location quotient and local Moran’s I shows that Blacks are more spatially clustered in St. Louis, and are more concentrated in Cincinnati. Spatial housing submarkets, local market segments with the distinct preference structure, are delineated using multivariate techniques; results demonstrate that St. Louis has more divided and polarized housing markets than Cincinnati. This chapter is an empirically-informed discussion of relevant social theory for examining the phenomenon of lifestyle migration in the United States in both rural and urban settings. Specifically, the chapter explores key explanatory models born of research into so-called non-economic migration occurring since the early twentieth century—models that may be characterized as primarily either production or consumption oriented in their emphasis—as a context for outlining an integrated approach. And communities have been called to participate in the process of attaining that ideal. Community-based organizations (CBOs) can benefit from using GIS in building community assets and developing sustainability initiatives. However, GIS, has not been used widely for these purposes in CBOs yet. This paper presents the results of ethnographic research conducted with several environmental justice (EJ) organisations in Latino communities of Los Angeles, California. Traditional EJ politics revolves around research and advocacy to reduce discriminatory environmental exposures, risks, and impacts. Policy-related decision making requires that potential sustainability measures meet three key requirements; (i) sustainability metrics need to be comprehensive such that they reflect the experience of representative households; (ii) sustainability indices need to be comparable across different geographic scales, and; (iii) measures of sustainability need to be economically meaningful, ideally tying into the larger system of national accounts. Residential segregation has important implications for social mobility, namely through achievement gap by neighborhoods. The endeavor to unravel processes leading to residential segregation can benefit from empirical analysis of housing submarkets. This paper discusses how spatial analysis of housing submarkets might be useful in exploring patterns and processes of residential segregation. As a case study, housing submarkets in St. Louis and Cincinnati are empirically delineated using fuzzy clustering, and differences in spatial pattern of residential segregation in these two metropoiltan areas are discussed.

Libya, which is well over 80% urban, is placed in the upper echelons of the most urbanized countries in the world as the majority of its citizens now live in urban areas of different sizes and functions. However, when rapid urban growth trends were examined more closely, serious problems come to the fore, depicting key challenges to the sustainability of both urban landscapes and elements of the natural environment. Specifically, unregulated urban growth and the proliferation of scattered housing in the urban fringe areas of many cities have resulted in land use conflicts and serious ecological problems.

Why did newly freed slaves and their descendants wait a half a century before migrating in large numbers to the superior economic opportunities in the North? Census lifetime migration data on both movers and stayers are examined intertemporally for both whites and blacks. Regression analysis reveals that before 1920 Southern blacks had a very strong affinity for the "Southern way of life."
