Toledo made national headlines in the mid-1940's when the legendary industrial designer, Norman Bel Geddes, was commissioned to develop a plan for the city's future.  Using archival work and field observation, this research analyzes the plan, and reflects on its impact on Toledo and on the design of American cities today.

Elisa Addlesperger’s map, created as part of a final project for GEO 243 Remote Sensing, shows the impact of development on availability of farmland in four collar counties in northeastern Illinois: Kane, Kendall, Will and McHenry. Landsat 5 multi-band spectral images from 1987 and 2007 were processed to create classes showing development density in each respective year. Open or agricultural land is indicated with a bright green. Based on this visual analysis, substantial amounts of arable land have been lost to development in Chicago’s collar counties. Toledo, Ohio, once a thriving manufacturing center, is emblematic of cities in the U.S. industrial Midwest that are reeling from the effects of precipitous economic decline.  In Toledo’s case, the city’s population has dropped from a peak of 385,000 in 1980 to under 300,000.  Against this backdrop, we are using Toledo as a case study, and by documenting a critical architectural and urban planning history of the city, we argue that the traditional model that linked architecture and capital no longer holds.
