Connecting Cleveland: Economic Impact Of Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority, Iryna Lendel, Obed Pasha, Dro Sohrabian, Matthew B. Ellerbrock

Urban Publications

The Center for Economic Development (the Center) produced this economic impact report for the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) to illustrate how their operations, infrastructure, and services contribute to Cuyahoga County’s economy. Cleveland is fortunate among the Midwestern metropolitan areas to have a rich transit history and infrastructure which is actively updated and shapes regional life. Among similar metro transit authorities in the region (Detroit, Cincinnati, and others), GCRTA was second only to Pittsburgh’s Port Authority of Allegheny County in terms of ridership and vehicle-revenue miles in 2017.

With 2,300 full-time employees in 2017, GCRTA is ...

Writing—humans documenting our history in the form of the “written word”—has been one of the largest transitive forces through time. The act of becoming an author, however—of moving away from the mere transcription of events to becoming the voice and translator of events—has changed how we examine ourselves, society, and life. Most of us remember the first novel that drew us into its story, thus changing how we looked out at the world, contributing to our emotional acumen, enriching our overall intelligence, and giving us a new perspective on our view of life. This is the ...

The Nasa Glenn Research Center: An Economic Impact Study Fiscal Year 2017, Iryna Lendel, Jinhee Yun

Urban Publications

Economic impact is an analytical approach used to estimate the benefits generated by an entity for an affected region. This study uses an input-output (I-O) model to estimate the effect of NASA Glenn Research Center’s spending on the economies of Northeast Ohio (NEO) and Ohio. This analytical tool measures economic impact in terms of growth in output (sales), value added (output less intermediary goods), number of new and supported jobs, labor income, and tax revenues. For FY 2017 study, the Center used a methodology to measure NASA Glenn’s impact on the economies of Northeast Ohio and Ohio, as ...

The MetroHealth System (“MHS”) Board of Trustees endorsed a campus transformation plan for an $855 million capital project, which includes cost projections for various aspects of the project, including design, construction, and equipment. The transformation plan covers a period of nine years spanning 2015 to 2023. The project involves several new buildings, including a 12-story hospital, a large parking garage, and a central utility plant. Practitioner Guidebook: Measuring Entrepreneurial Ecosystems, Merissa Piazza

Urban Publications

This study, with support from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, focuses on two major empirical questions: 1) Does the theoretical model established by Stangler and Bell-Masterson (2015) quantitatively hold for regions? Meaning, when the theoretical model is empirically evaluated, will the same data groupings emerge? and 2) What are the key indicators which entrepreneurs and the economic literature view as essential for entrepreneurial ecosystem vibrancy?

Measuring Entrepreneurial Ecosystems, Caroline Taich, Merissa Piazza, Kara Carter, Alexa Wilcox Dec 2016

Measuring Entrepreneurial Ecosystems, Caroline Taich, Merissa Piazza, Kara Carter, Alexa Wilcox

Urban Publications

Examining entrepreneurial ecosystem measurement is an interesting and important research activity for several reasons. First, there is a significant amount of taxpayer investment in play through public financing of small businesses and early stage companies. Second, practitioners and funders are currently seeking ways to expand entrepreneurial activity in order to increase regional prosperity.

The goal of this research study is to quantitatively and qualitatively explore the indicators of entrepreneurial ecosystems. This study, with support from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, focuses on two major questions: 1) what are the indicators of an entrepreneurial ecosystem, and which of these best reflect ...

High-Growth Firms: Delineating Definitions, Industries, And Business Cycle Performance, Merissa Piazza, Ziona Austrian, Iryna Lendel, Serena Alexander, Ellen Cyran, Deborah D. Hoover, Ray Leach May 2016

High-Growth Firms: Delineating Definitions, Industries, And Business Cycle Performance, Merissa Piazza, Ziona Austrian, Iryna Lendel, Serena Alexander, Ellen Cyran, Deborah D. Hoover, Ray Leach

Urban Publications

There are strong reasons to believe that public policy affects the prevalence and success of entrepreneurial firms, and there is consensus in the literature that high-growth firms (HGFs), a specific subset of entrepreneurial firms that have a propensity to be employment generators in the economy, contribute significantly to employment growth (see, for example, Acs & Mueller, 2008; Acs, Parsons, & Tracy, 2008; Birch & Medoff, 1994; Choi, Robertson, & Rupasingha, 2013, Clayton, Sadeghi, Spletzer, & Talan, 2013; Kirchhoff, 1994; Mason & Brown, 2013; Stangler, 2010; Thurik, 2009). Moreover, authors have called for policy makers to provide HGFs with the resources they need in order to grow (Mason & Brown, 2013; Shane, 2009). However, due to the lack of agreement in the literature on how ...

Fiscal And Economic Impact Analysis Of Proposed Nexus Natural Gas Pipeline On The City Of Green, Ohio, Robert A. Simons, Andrew R. Thomas, Iryna Lendel, Bryan Townley

Urban Publications

In 2014 Spectra Energy (“Spectra”) and DTE Energy announced plans to build a high-pressure natural gas transmission pipeline (called “Nexus”) that would run from the Utica-Marcellus region near eastern Ohio across northern Ohio, into Michigan, and ultimately into Chicago and Ontario, Canada. The stated purpose for building the proposed pipeline is to take anticipated “growing” gas supplies produced from the Appalachian Basin to the “high demand” markets in Ohio, Michigan, Chicago and Ontario. Nexus proposes 250 miles of high pressure, 36 inch diameter pipeline capable of carrying around 1.5 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day.

However the ...

Ohio Historic Preservation Tax Credit Economic Impact Study, Iryna Lendel, Candi Clouse, Ellen Cyran, Tatyana Guzman, Merissa Piazza, Stephanie Ryberg Webster, Charlie Post, Kenneth Kalynchuk

Urban Publications

In the sunset of the 1990s and beginning of the Millennium, historic designation of properties has become an important tool increasingly used to preserve cultural heritage, revive central-city neighborhoods, and stimulate community economic development. Many academic studies illustrated that historic preservation has a positive impact on property values (Zahirovic-Herbert and Chatterjee, 2010; Leicheanko et al., 1999; Clark and Herrin, 1997; Schaeffer and Millerick, 1991).1 Since 2005, historic preservation became part of the sustainable growth concept emphasizing property values, the reuse of historic buildings, integration of culture and multi-functional landscapes, and environmental stewardship. There is a scarcity of literature measuring ...

The Need For Cleveland Promise, Merissa Piazza, Marcus Notaro, Nikki Glazer, Ziona Austrian

Urban Publications

Many cities throughout the United States have created educational “promise” campaigns. Cities such as Kalamazoo and Pittsburgh have offered students money to attend college if they were enrolled in an urban public school and met other specific curriculum goals. These policies were created based on economic development research that cities and regions benefit from having population with education beyond high school. Studies have shown that the more educated a city’s population is, the more rapidly the city will experience growth. Moreover, cities with a diverse mix of jobs and a high concentration of human capital will attract employers, other ...
