This research provides relevant, data-driven insights on competitive industries in the Northeast Ohio (NEO)1 economy over the 2013-2017 period. This report informs the reader on industries that over the last five years outperformed their national counterparts in wealth creation. These industries employ a significant amount of regional workforce, create sizable output, and have a regional competitive advantage. This research updates previous research conducted by the Regional Economic Competitiveness Strategy in 2011 and provides up-to-date insights into the future growth areas of NEO’s regional economy.

Public policy and planning decisions require glimpses into the future, to assess how the social-ecological systems we plan for might evolve with or without policy intervention. To do so, one approach gaining currency is using anticipatory tools rather than predictions. Anticipation entails generating a range of possible systems futures (scenarios), instead of attempting to predict the one that will prevail. We use here a scenario-generating model, to anticipate where in a region businesses are likely to locate in time. Using data for Northeast Ohio, including the Cleveland–Akron–Lorain– Elyria, Ohio Combined Statistical Area, we estimate the model parameters. We evaluate its …

Cleveland’s Slavic Village (and Broadway) is a neighborhood on the southeast side of Cleveland bordering the industrial valley. It grew with the arrival of European immigrants attracted by the jobs in the factories in the adjacent valley. Centered at Broadway and East 55th Street, the bustling neighborhood had commercial strips and churches serving a growing population. The total population peaked at 60,257 in 1950. As de-industrialization occurred in post-World War II Cleveland, so too did it affect Slavic Village as jobs left. By 2000, its population was about half (30,524) of what it had been half a century earlier. However, …

This report relates the results of an investigation into market conditions for a proposed microgrid in downtown Cleveland, Ohio, as well the potential for additional jobs, income, and tax revenues that might accompany such an enterprise. Power interruptions have been estimated to cost commercial and industrial customers more than $100 billion each year in the United States.1 Because microgrids can reduce or eliminate power disruptions, the proposed microgrid could position Cleveland to capture growth among those industries that experience relatively greater losses when power outages occur. This includes momentary interruptions, which account for a “substantial portion”2 of such costs. The …

This report identifies and describes national trends in the progression of agricultural cooperatives since 1913 with an emphasis on 2000s. As the number of agricultural cooperatives in the U.S. has declined, their size, represented by business volume and the number of members, increased. Based on 1976-2016 data, cooperatives’ total assets and equity have been increasing and were projected to grow in 2017. On average, 2% of cooperatives in the U.S. merged or were acquired . Average incidence rates of mergers and acquisitions during 2000-2012 (33 incidences) were lower than during 1980-1999 (83 incidences). Over time, the number of grain cooperatives …

Increasing the resiliency of the electrical utility system in a region has numerous benefits to the residents, companies, and public entities operating in that region ranging from improved safety to financial impacts. However, attracting political interest and capital for such a major infrastructure improvement project requires an expectation from the potential participants that the project will be technically possible and economically attractive for investors. Performing a feasibility study is an important first step to ensure that a project is worthy of pursuit from both a technical and economic viewpoint.

This report analyzes the potential economic impact of La Villa Hispana’s construction and operation proposed in the Clark‐Fulton neighborhood of Cleveland, the home to the densest population of Hispanic residents in the State of Ohio. We separately estimate the economic impact of El Mercado, one of the foundational projects of the La Villa Hispana development. The economic impacts are assessed on the City of Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, and the State of Ohio.

Economic impact is an analytical approach used to estimate the benefits generated by an entity for an affected region. This study uses an input-output (I-O) model to estimate the effect of NASA Glenn Research Center’s spending on the economies of Northeast Ohio (NEO) and Ohio. This analytical tool measures economic impact in terms of growth in output (sales), value added (output less intermediary goods), number of new and supported jobs, labor income, and tax revenues. Volunteers enable nonprofit organizations to reach more clients and more effectively fulfill their missions. However, the good done by these volunteers may be offset by their careless behavior. Rising fears that resulting lawsuits and monetary damages would deter potential volunteers from volunteering caused Congress to enact the Volunteer Protection Act. This research studies court decisions to ascertain whether the law fulfills its purpose and considers the implications of these interpretations for nonprofit managers. It also tests the usefulness of the hermeneutical approach to legal interpretation and to determine how the Act has changed as a result of these court decisions.

The 2018 report on the economic impact of companies funded and/or assisted by the Northeast Ohio Entrepreneurial Services Provider Program (ESP) shows findings and evidence of the growth of the supported firms over time. These companies not only have a significant workforce and expenditures, they also have a total of 2,313 issued patents and 6,777 patents pending. In 2017 alone, there were 891 issued patents and 920 patents pending.

BorderLight International Theater Festival is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit established to launch a summer festival of contemporary international theater in Cleveland beginning in July 2019. Co-directors Dale Heinen and Jeffrey Pence have spearheaded BorderLight’s inception and programming. BorderLight is conceptualized in its debut form as a four-day international theater festival located in Cleveland, Ohio.1 It will include curated performances by international, national, and local artists—as well as an independent fringe festival—and will focus on engagement with underserved audiences and communities.2 This makes BorderLight a bifurcated theater festival, which is a combination of a curated and uncurated festival whereby some content is …

• The Cleveland metro has the densest health science labor market in the nation, with 14.5% of the region’s workforce employed in high-skilled healthcare delivery. Cleveland is ahead of Philadelphia (14.1%) and Boston (14.1%).
• Since 2002, healthcare and social assistance jobs in Cuyahoga County increased from approximately 104,500 to 131,700, with the aggregate income from those jobs growing from an inflation-adjusted $4.8 billion to $6.9 billion in 2016.

This study outlines the economic and fiscal impacts of the redevelopment of the Variety Village District, comprised of the Variety Theatre Complex, a new public parking lot, and 40,000 square feet of new retail along Lorain Avenue. In addition, as shown in the full report, a portion of the location decision for at least three local industries which are moving to, or expanding their enterprise in, the immediate Westown neighborhood, can be attributed to the catalytic effect of the Variety Village District redevelopment.

American cities are facing an affordable housing crisis. While the housing situation varies among U.S. cities, there is a national crisis (Stein, 2018). In March, 2018, the National Low-Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC)(nlihc.org) issued its report The Gap: A Shortage of Affordable Housing which reported a shortage of 7.2 million affordable and available rentals for extremely low-income renter households. 71% of the lowest income renters are severely house cost-burdened, spending more than half of their limited incomes on housing. The report identified the following five cities as having the most severe shortages of affordable housing: Las Vegas, Orlando, Los Angeles, Houston …
