This study focuses on Ohio companies with an Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs) - the most common form of employee ownership in the U.S. Literature on the positive impacts of employee ownership at the individual and company level has grown in recent decades finding that individual employee-owners have longer tenure, more household wealth, higher wages, larger retirement accounts, and opportunities to participate in company decisions. At the company level research finds that employee-owned companies perform better than conventional companies on several performance metrics including overall survival rates, productivity, employment growth, and sales. Dr. Iryna Demko, Research Associate at the Center for Economic Development, testified at the hearing of the U.S. House Committee on Small Business on the Paycheck Protection Program. The Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) has been one of the largest economic stimulus programs in U.S. history. In 2020 and 2021, the SBA disbursed over $800 billion in Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans to help small businesses keep their employees on payroll during the Covid-19 pandemic.

A recognized leader in transportation research and innovation since 1974, the Transportation Research Center Inc. (TRC), with its 4,500-acre testing facility and expert technical team, created more than $127 million total in economic output in 2019 and supported over 670 total jobs with almost $36 million in wages and benefits throughout Ohio, the study determined. Testing and research on behalf of TRC clients, including many of the world’s leading automotive manufacturers and systems innovators, generated more than $1.3 million in taxes to local government entities, $1.3 million to the state government and $2.3 million to the federal government. Ohio is home to 452 cooperatives, including some of the largest agricultural co-ops in the country, and is the birthplace of rural electric cooperatives in the U.S. However, prior to this analysis there was little information about the economic impact of those cooperatives on the state’s economy. The research team used various public sources and interviews to gather data on 58 agricultural and food cooperatives and 25 rural electric cooperatives in Ohio. This study found that agriculture, food, and rural electric cooperatives supported an estimated 12,910 full-time and part-time jobs in the state, attained $875 million in labor income, and …

The global COVID-19 pandemic has had sweeping impacts on our society; some of the most dire are economic in nature. In Ohio, stay-at-home orders enacted by Governor DeWine in March 2020 resulted in many Ohioans losing work, in part or altogether. The shutdowns also shifted consumption patterns, with more spending online and at grocery stores taking the place of entertainment, travel, and accommodations. The Center for Economic Development (the Center) produced this economic impact report for the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) to illustrate how their operations, infrastructure, and services contribute to Cuyahoga County’s economy. Cleveland is fortunate among the Midwestern metropolitan areas to have a rich transit history and infrastructure which is actively updated and shapes regional life. Among similar metro transit authorities in the region (Detroit, Cincinnati, and others), GCRTA was second only to Pittsburgh’s Port Authority of Allegheny County in terms of ridership and vehicle-revenue miles in 2017.

This report identifies and describes national trends in the progression of agricultural cooperatives since 1913 with an emphasis on 2000s. As the number of agricultural cooperatives in the U.S. has declined, their size, represented by business volume and the number of members, increased. Based on 1976-2016 data, cooperatives’ total assets and equity have been increasing and were projected to grow in 2017. On average, 2% of cooperatives in the U.S. merged or were acquired . Average incidence rates of mergers and acquisitions during 2000-2012 (33 incidences) were lower than during 1980-1999 (83 incidences). Over time, the number of grain cooperatives …

The 2018 report on the economic impact of companies funded and/or assisted by the Northeast Ohio Entrepreneurial Services Provider Program (ESP) shows findings and evidence of the growth of the supported firms over time. These companies not only have a significant workforce and expenditures, they also have a total of 2,313 issued patents and 6,777 patents pending. In 2017 alone, there were 891 issued patents and 920 patents pending.

The MetroHealth System (“MHS”) Board of Trustees endorsed a campus transformation plan for an $855 million capital project, which includes cost projections for various aspects of the project, including design, construction, and equipment. The transformation plan covers a period of nine years spanning 2015 to 2023. The project involves several new buildings, including a 12-story hospital, a large parking garage, and a central utility plant. In 2014 Spectra Energy (“Spectra”) and DTE Energy announced plans to build a high-pressure natural gas transmission pipeline (called “Nexus”) that would run from the Utica-Marcellus region near eastern Ohio across northern Ohio, into Michigan, and ultimately into Chicago and Ontario, Canada. The stated purpose for building the proposed pipeline is to take anticipated “growing” gas supplies produced from the Appalachian Basin to the “high demand” markets in Ohio, Michigan, Chicago and Ontario. Nexus proposes 250 miles of high pressure, 36 inch diameter pipeline capable of carrying around 1.5 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day.

Filming in Ohio has increased since the adoption of the Ohio Motion Picture Tax Credit. After the blockbusters Spiderman 3 and The Avengers were filmed in the Cleveland metropolitan area, the city saw another comic book hero come to town when it doubled as Washington, D.C. for Captain America: Winter Soldier. Cleveland’s reputation as a sports town came to the forefront in the film Draft Day, highlighting the Cleveland Browns football franchise which, but for the Ohio Motion Picture Tax Credit, would have been about the Buffalo Bills. These large-scale movies bring an influx of outside money to the state.
