Experiences With Environmental Gentrification: Evidence From Chicago, Tania Schusler, Amy Krings, Richard T. Melstrom Aug 2023

Experiences With Environmental Gentrification: Evidence From Chicago, Tania Schusler, Amy Krings, Richard T. Melstrom

School of Environmental Sustainability: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Environmental contamination and limited access to green spaces disproportionately burden communities of color with negative impacts on residents’ health. Yet, cleaning up contamination and creating green spaces has in some cases been associated with displacing long-term residents as the neighborhood becomes desirable to more affluent, often Whiter, populations through environmental gentrification. We used mixed methods to investigate environmental gentrification in the city of Chicago, IL, USA. We examined quantitatively the relationship between green areas, brownfield cleanups, and indicators of gentrification, including race and ethnicity, income, households without children, and home ownership. We explored through qualitative interviews how key informants perceive …

Having achieved nearly complete coverage of non-urban and suburban markets, mega-retailer Wal-Mart has turned its attention to urban expansion. Evaluations of Wal-Mart’s impact on urban retail businesses and local employment are necessary to inform policy makers, scholars, and community activists looking to improve economic opportunities for inner-city residents. This study focuses on the Wal-Mart store that opened on the West Side of Chicago in September 2006.

Lessons In Philanthropy: A Case Studies Approach, Center For Urban Research And Learning, Louis T. Delgado Jun 2007

Lessons In Philanthropy: A Case Studies Approach, Center For Urban Research And Learning, Louis T. Delgado

Center for Urban Research and Learning: Publications and Other Works

Over the past twenty years, academic institutions have increasingly developed programs of study on the nonprofit sector, most of which emphasize nonprofit management or fundraising. The study of organized philanthropy in general, and foundation giving specifically, is still at a relatively early stage of development. Accordingly, the development of research and teaching materials available for use in formal academic settings is largely an unmet need. There are numerous experiences in the grant making process that simply go unreported and unavailable for educational purposes. These experiences, however, can prove extremely educational and should not be overlooked. The cased studies that follow …

We use data from the Cook County Assessor to document the decline in Chicago apartments and growth in condominium units from 1989 to 2004. While the total number of housing units in Chicago remained approximately constant at a little over one million, we find that at least 44,637 and perhaps as many as 97,894 apartment units were removed from Chicago’s housing stock during this period. Over the same period 102,408 condominium units have been added to the housing stock. We provide tables and maps that show the changes by in small apartments (less than six units), large apartments (7+ units) …

As the Chicago metropolitan area continues to grow, a number of plans have been authored by a variety of regional civic organizations. “Regional equity” and “smart growth” have been suggested as organizing principles in some, while economic growth and public revenues have been the focus of others. However, the ongoing role of local community voices in past, present, and future plans is a critical matter. The extent to which future direction of our city and suburbs is informed by local needs partially hinges on the integration of local communities in regional policy debates on both comprehensive plans and specific policy …

Neighborhood Voices: Getting It Together -- Connecting Local Neighborhoods And National Advocates, Anne Pasmanick, National Neighborhood Coalition

Center for Urban Research and Learning: Publications and Other Works

This report, focusing on the national relationship to local organizations, local and regional coalitions, and the forging of complementary relationships, shows that the work of advocates based in Washington can be bolstered by a renewed immersion in the day-to-day challenges of "local" groups. The frustrations of the "local" groups can be mitigated with a deeper appreciation of the constrained realities of federal advocacy in a period of devolution, retrenchment in social services and relentless assault on the role of government in providing basic supports for people and their communities. The evaluation was constructed using a total of 216 surveys that …

This is a story of two groups of determined people with intersecting interests. Group one: a dozen leaders within United Power for Action and Justice who set out to prove their conviction, that homelessness is one symptom of a complex of issues that destabilizes individuals and communities. In 2000, a cluster of leaders within United Power organized member institutions in the north and northwest suburbs of Chicago, and initiated a relationship with Congressman John Porter …

Saving Our Homes: The Lessons Of Community Struggles To Preserve Affordable Housing In Chicago's Uptown, Center For Urban Research And Learning, Philip Nyden, Joanne Adams

Center for Urban Research and Learning: Publications and Other Works

Over the past 25 years we have witnessed declining federal investment in affordable housing at the same time as there has been growth in low-income households. During this same quarter of a century we have seen a shift from a national "War on Poverty" to federal policies that treat poor adults and children as hopeless, undeserving citizens. In this new era of fiscal constraints there is no talk about meeting basic nutritional, housing, health care, and educational needs. A chorus of new conservative leaders claims to be speaking for the suffering middle class. The media increasingly talk of the "haves" …
