The Arroyofest Project: Building Capacity And Connecting Diverse Communities, Marcus Renner

On June 15, 2003, at four different locations, from Lincoln Heights in the City of Los Angeles to the freeway entrance-way at Glenarm in Pasadena, more than 3,000 bike riders and several thousand walkers descended on the Historic Arroyo Seco Parkway, better known as the 110 or Pasadena Freeway. This event, ArroyoFest, was part of a broader agenda for building capacity and connecting the diverse communities along the Arroyo Seco corridor. This Report provides the background to ArroyoFest, the multiple activities that preceded it, and the plans for the future of the type of community building it generated.

Putting The Pleasure Back In The Drive: Reclaiming Urban Parkways For The 21st Century, Robert Gottlieb, Anastasia Loukaitou-Sideris

Studying the history and current troubles of the Arroyo Seco Parkway, which connects Pasadena to downtown Los Angeles, will bring to light a nationwide parkway problem. Like many parkways, the Arroyo Seco began in the pre-World War II era when transportation needs and traffic patterns were vastly different than they are today. In the tradition of East Coast parkways that featured wide, gently curving roads and were surrounded by landscaped areas-themselves inspired by the wide boulevards of Paris and Berlin-the Arroyo Seco was designed for pleasurable drives at moderate speeds.
