Salty: A Diffractive Inquiry Of Visceral Knowing And Embodied Aesthetics, Mei Ling Chua
Salty: A Diffractive Inquiry Of Visceral Knowing And Embodied Aesthetics, Mei Ling Chua
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation takes a diffractive, onto-epistemological approach to everyday practices with salt in order to articulate an expanded understanding of meaning making and knowledge production. This research reckons with and challenges dominant modes of knowing that engage a Cartesian perspective to situate knowing as the exclusive domain of the mind in both form and topic of inquiry. This research acts simultaneously as both a direct practice of and metacognition about knowledge production by examining 1. the embodied (including sensory and emotional aspects) and 2. the relational (including interpersonal and socio-cultural) dimensions of experience as visceral knowing. This articulation of …
From Extractivism To Adjacency. A Research Manifesto, Margarita Palacios, Anette Baldauf
From Extractivism To Adjacency. A Research Manifesto, Margarita Palacios, Anette Baldauf
Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis
This essay concerns with the ways in which extractivism continues to be reproduced in academic frameworks despite innumerous initiatives of decolonization. Engaging with artistic research and embracing a materialist approach that emphasizes embeddedness and embodiment, as well as acknowledging the affective-aesthetic flows that accompany research, the authors locate the heart of the problem at the disjuncture between critical epistemology and research practices. This disavowed space of knowledge production, they argue, is where the logics of extractivism and its racialized epistemic dualism are reproduced. The authors put forward the notion of adjacency, as in their view, dwelling on the power of …
Queer Ecologies: A Final Syllabus/Zine Product Of Our Independent Study, Yeh Seo Jung, Ray Craig
Queer Ecologies: A Final Syllabus/Zine Product Of Our Independent Study, Yeh Seo Jung, Ray Craig
Crossings: Swarthmore Undergraduate Feminist Research Journal
This zine is the product of our independent study course Queer Ecologies, which is an exploration of bio-social systems using a queer and feminist theoretical lens. We aim to look critically at knowledge formation and construct alternative visions for more just and sustainable relationships between science, nature, and ourselves. While queer theory most directly interrogates the normative structure of heterosexuality both in humans and in biology more broadly, these studies include analyses of hierarchy, power, and value. Queer Ecology can be used to examine phenomena such as climate change, extinction, pollution, species hierarchies, agricultural practices, resource extraction, and human population …
Seeing And Unlearning Whiteness: A Mindfulness Workshop For Racial Justice, Emily Haranas
Seeing And Unlearning Whiteness: A Mindfulness Workshop For Racial Justice, Emily Haranas
Mindfulness Studies Theses
Racism is a deeply embedded, foundational aspect of American society. However, because the privilege of Whiteness insulates White individuals from the workings of systemic injustice and oppression and enables them to choose the conditions of their accountability in the movement for racial justice, many remain painfully blind to this fact. As such, there is a significant need for those who have been racialized White to develop a critical awareness of the powers and privileges ascribed to their racial identity. The working premise of this thesis is that mindfulness can assist White individuals in unlinking the socialized habits of mind that …
Theoretical Modeling For Curious Leadership And Instrument Development And Validation For Measuring Curious Leader Capacity, Lisa M. Gick
Theoretical Modeling For Curious Leadership And Instrument Development And Validation For Measuring Curious Leader Capacity, Lisa M. Gick
Antioch University Full-Text Dissertations & Theses
When curious, we admit we do not know. With the contemporary workplace emerging through increased complexity, leaders are compelled to shift mindsets and practices from more traditional methods to those more in service to the uncertainty of the day. The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to generate an integrated theoretical framework for curious leadership, a validated scale for its measurement, and practical methods for engaging differently in the context and practice of leading. Drawing from the literature review of relational leadership, adaptive leadership, complexity leadership, growth mindsets, and curious behavior, and from my practice, 12 sub-constructs were identified as …
Reviving Knowledges Through Play And Resistance: The Case Of Navajo Conceptions Of Space, Daniel Ness, Richard D. Sawyer
Reviving Knowledges Through Play And Resistance: The Case Of Navajo Conceptions Of Space, Daniel Ness, Richard D. Sawyer
Northwest Journal of Teacher Education
The authors explore a possible cause of epistemicidal predispositions of the dominant Eurocentric curricula. They posit that one way to determine a plausible contributing factor of this increasing devastation is to consider epistemicide through the lens of intellectual development. To do this, the authors examine parallel patterns of behavior in the domains of developmental and cognitive psychology. The authors then discuss an alternative framework to the Western conception of space within formal K-12 education by presenting the Navajo conception of space and play. Throughout the paper, the authors argue that all students—and especially those living in poverty in commercially constructed, …
The Ring Quarry Mining Complex: A Preliminary Archaeological Investigation Into Ancient Native American Sites In Northwestern New Jersey, Joseph D. Cusack
The Ring Quarry Mining Complex: A Preliminary Archaeological Investigation Into Ancient Native American Sites In Northwestern New Jersey, Joseph D. Cusack
Theses and Dissertations
The Ring Quarry Mining Complex (RQMC) in northwestern New Jersey is an archaeological, Pre-Contact Native American mining and habitation complex. The RQMC was a primary source of tool stone in the Vernon Valley of New Jersey for thousands of years. Evidence of human occupation within the study area extends from the Paleoindian through the Contact Period. This study focuses on the ancient chert quarry and surrounding sites across a landscape making up a habitational complex.
The Need To Return The Values Of Human Inquiry To Scholarly Communication With Emily Ford, Emily Ford
The Need To Return The Values Of Human Inquiry To Scholarly Communication With Emily Ford, Emily Ford
PDXPLORES Podcast
Corresponding published article https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/ulib_fac/346/.
In this episode of PDXPLORES, Emily Ford, a professor in the Millar Library at Portland State University, discusses the lived experiences of peer review, a small but landmark part of scholarly communications. Ford argues that proprietary publishing has influenced many of the processes in the scholarly publishing ecosystem, resulting in a need to reapply the values of human inquiry to scholarly communications. Drawing from her research, Ford suggests how the academic community might address this need.

Public Acceptance Of Medical Screening Recommendations, Safety Risks, And Implied Liabilities Requirements For Space Flight Participation, Cory J. Trunkhill
Public Acceptance Of Medical Screening Recommendations, Safety Risks, And Implied Liabilities Requirements For Space Flight Participation, Cory J. Trunkhill
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The space tourism industry is preparing to send space flight participants on orbital and suborbital flights. Space flight participants are not professional astronauts and are not subject to the rules and guidelines covering space flight crewmembers. This research addresses public acceptance of current Federal Aviation Administration guidance and regulations as designated for civil participation in human space flight.
The research utilized an ordinal linear regression analysis of survey data to explore the public acceptance of the current medical screening recommended guidance and the regulations for safety risk and implied liability for space flight participation. Independent variables constituted participant demographic representations …
Rethinking Ethical Questions In Life-History Interview Research, Anne Rothe
Rethinking Ethical Questions In Life-History Interview Research, Anne Rothe
The Qualitative Report
Having interviewed Germans who emigrated to Israel and, in most cases, converted to Judaism, I experienced a paralyzing sense of ethical conflict when I began analyzing the first order discourse my participants and I had co-constructed to transform it into the second-order discourse of research publications. So, I set out to rethink the ethics of life-history interview research. My quest into our ethical responsibilities began with rule-based deontological and consequentialist ethics and the guidelines in the social sciences they inform. It led me to reconsider such core notions as informed consent, privacy, and risk-benefit analysis. I came to realize that …
Scrutinizing Precarity: In Search Of Emancipatory Potential, Jaime Aznar Erasun
Scrutinizing Precarity: In Search Of Emancipatory Potential, Jaime Aznar Erasun
Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis
This paper provides a review and discussion on the emancipatory potential of the notion of ‘precarity’. Since the 1980s, the notion of ‘precarity’ has been used increasingly by scholars and activists to account for variegated grievances. Specifically, it has been used to address issues related to the transformations of labour in the XXIst century: neoliberal reorganization of labour markets, increasing unavailability of stable jobs, increased personal debts, debilitating labour unions or the lack of accessible housing among other issues. However, beyond structural grievances voiced by everyday workers, precarity can also serve as an analytical tool to pin down socially induced …
Reducing The Digital Divide: Why Culturally Relevant Ehealth Interventions Can Reduce Latino Health Disparities, Blanca Flor Garcia-Silva
Reducing The Digital Divide: Why Culturally Relevant Ehealth Interventions Can Reduce Latino Health Disparities, Blanca Flor Garcia-Silva
Master's Projects and Capstones
Objectives: This paper systematically reviews the recent literature on incorporating culturally relevant material in electronic health (eHealth) tools for Latinos. Latinos are a fast-growing ethnic population set to reach 119 million individuals by 2060 (Velasco-Mondragon et al., 2016). Latinos are also disproportionately affected by comorbidities and other poor health outcomes. Developing a culturally sensitive eHealth tool can lead to positive health outcomes among Latinos. Methods: Peer-reviewed articles and analyses were extracted to identify whether eHealth was associated with positive health outcomes among Latino adults. Four literature databases were used to extract English-language articles published from 2001 to 2022. …
Behind Closed Doors: A Look Into Access To Supportive Resources And Women Experiencing Intimate Partner Violence (Ipv), Ashley Lauren Holloway
Behind Closed Doors: A Look Into Access To Supportive Resources And Women Experiencing Intimate Partner Violence (Ipv), Ashley Lauren Holloway
Master's Projects and Capstones
Introduction Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a preventable health disparity that remains an underrepresented health issue due to survivors' comfortability in reporting violence within their most intimate relationships; in addition to providers' comfortability in addressing intimate partner violence. The high prevalence of IPV-related incidents highlights the importance of early intervention to prevent victims from experiencing violence again and dying.
Methods A systematic review was conducted to look into intimate partner violence against women. Key words such as intimate partner violence or domestic violence, women, utilization of care services or services, socioecological model were searched through pubmed and other scholarly search …
Grandchildren Of Ottomans Vs. Children Of Atatürk: A Script On Turkey's Emerging Political Identities Towards 2023, İrem Taştan, Ezgi Karanfil
Grandchildren Of Ottomans Vs. Children Of Atatürk: A Script On Turkey's Emerging Political Identities Towards 2023, İrem Taştan, Ezgi Karanfil
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
The aim of this script is to take the initiative to open an updated discussion of the ways in which the global ideological market is shaping the collective political identities in the context of contemporary Turkey. We craft two seemingly opposing yet deeply connected political identities, namely the "grandchildren of Ottomans" and the "children of Atatürk", to critically explore the future possibilities for Turkey's contested ideological market.
