In the age of internationalization, global citizenship education has become an important concept, particularly in regards to worldwide curriculum reform. Different institutions around the world have been promoting the concept of global citizenship education by diversifying programs and curricula so as to prepare students with potent skills and knowledge for future challenges. International Service-Learning (ISL) is unique in itself in that it integrates community services and academic learning on a global platform. In recent years, many scholars have brought attention to ISL in higher education and provided insight on conducting research on this kind of learning experience. These scholars agree …

2013 Conference Report: The Social Practice Of Human Rights, Mark Ensalaco

Mark Ensalaco

Universities have new importance in the global human rights movement. This was the resounding message the University of Dayton heard at its global conference on human rights advocacy in October 2013. The human rights movement is experiencing dramatic changes. Dynamic new NGOs in the global South are resetting the human rights agenda. Popular movements inspired by human rights ideals are arising around the world to demand justice. New information technologies are creating the possibility of real global solidarity. The movement must adapt. Human rights organizations must imagine new strategies to address poverty and other root causes of human rights violations. …

Addressing Campus Sexual Assault Awareness Through Service Learning, Eileen J. Coussens

VA Engage Journal

ABSTRACT

This essay focuses on a Service Learning project which a group of students from my Advanced Composition class at Old Dominion University participated in regarding sexual assault awareness on college campuses. Throughout our class, we learned what Service Learning projects consist of and used what we learned to form our own proposals for projects that would reach from the classroom to the surrounding area to address community issues. We have written about our experiences with this Service Learning project in a reflective essay which acts as our final exam. In doing this, we also have attained our course goals …

Implementing The Sociocultural Theory While Teaching Esl, Michele S. Lee

SPACE: Student Perspectives About Civic Engagement

Abstract: Previous literature presents there is a demand to teach adult learners English due to the amount of non-English speaking citizens. Therefore, educators have responded to the need for programs that teach adult learners English. English as a Second Language (ESL) classes help adults by providing a foundation of comprehension for the English language, this foundation helps adults navigate their lives. Previous educational research states that Vygotsky’s (1978) Sociocultural Theory is a theory practiced in the ESL classroom because the Sociocultural Theory consists of cultural approach in addition to an educational approach. The Sociocultural Theory and has been beneficial for …

Power, Housing, And The Powerhouse Of Engaged Learning, Sarah C. Valoven Sep 2015

Power, Housing, And The Powerhouse Of Engaged Learning, Sarah C. Valoven

SPACE: Student Perspectives About Civic Engagement

This paper navigates an engaged learning internship experience at a social justice organization during its effort to preserve affordable housing within their community. Affordable housing availability in Chicago has diminished over the decades in the wake of gentrification and economic development, causing the displacement of lower-income occupants. As a student traversing the inner workings of society, the engaged learning course surfaced questions about power, policy and community organizing through the direct exposure to social justice issues. The goal of this course was to inspire students to become civically engaged through active community service with local organizations, and seek answers to …

Senior Companion Program Volunteers: Exploring Experiences, Transformative Rituals, And Recruitment/Retention Issues, Jason S. Ulsperger, Jericho Mcelroy, Haley Robertson, Kristen Ulsperger

Faculty Publications - Behavioral Sciences

Senior Companion Programs (SCPs) help the homebound elderly. They operate through local Area Agencies on Aging, but any nonprofit institution can apply for funding and operate a SCP. Program volunteers are 55 and older. They visit qualified elderly clients, which includes people who do not have the ability to fully care for themselves. Volunteers provide social interaction to clients, but they also provide a minimal level of services, such as grocery shopping, light housekeeping, and respite for caregivers. Examining the experiences of volunteers in these programs can help us better understand why actively engaging with others is important as we …

The Social Practice Of Human Rights, Joel Pruce Aug 2015

The Social Practice Of Human Rights, Joel Pruce

Joel Pruce

The Social Practice of Human Rights bridges the conventional scholar-practitioner divide by focusing on the space in between. In capturing this cutting edge research program, the volume proposes a perspective that motivates critical self-reflection of the strategies that drive communities dedicated to the advocacy and implementation of human rights. The social practice of human rights takes place not in front of a judge, but in the streets and alleys, in the backrooms and out-of-the-way places where change occurs. Contributors to this volume investigate the contexts and efforts of activists and professionals devoted to promoting human rights norms. This research takes …

2013 Conference Brochure: Be A Part Of The Human Rights Movement's New Frontier, Joel R. Pruce, Maureen E. Schlangen

Joel Pruce

Why must we explore the social practice of human rights? In the 65 years since the U.N.’s Universal Declaration on Human Rights, the human rights community has become a standard-bearer of normative behavior, influencing development and humanitarian organizations, multinational corporations and philanthropists. Though the movement is viewed as honorable and admirable, the certainty of its mission can inhibit introspection; a natural tendency is to prioritize rather than challenge prevailing assumptions. Are the good intentions of human rights advocates enough? No. Research and dialogue can help propel the human rights community forward by facilitating introspection to improve both advocacy and action: …
