Research on the portrayals of Latinos and mental health allows for the conceptualization of a long-lasting social issue. This project identifies the different film and television content that erroneously depicts Latinos with mental illnesses. This study takes a qualitative approach to help describe what roles Latino characters play in the media and how mental health is portrayed by such characters. We selected a purposive sample of cases where Latino roles were played by Latino actors, non-Latino actors, or actors with an “ambiguous” ethnic identity. This article describes a final research project for use in social research and/or sociology methods courses. The assessment is based in principles of project-based, cooperative, and process-oriented learning. The article includes a summary of the pedagogical frameworks that guide the assessment; a description of the assessment; instructions, rubrics, and materials for use in the classroom; and a plan for instructors to evaluate the effectiveness of the assessment.

Background: Food insecurity amongst South Asian Americans is a major public health issue. The South Asian American (SAA) community is the third largest Asian community in the United States. Despite this fact, very few specific studies have been conducted to investigate the food needs and barriers that exist within the SAA community so as to successfully help them improve dietary habits.

Methods: This study utilized a mixed methods convergent parallel design, where both qualitative and quantitative methods were conducted and analyzed separately and compared and contrasted at the end.

The political economy of communication (PEC) situates media systems and practices in their structural and historical contexts; however, PEC scholars rarely articulate or justify their research methods. To address this oversight, this article explains how PEC scholars use trade publications to study media industries, practices, policy making, and discourses thereof. Following a critical realist approach, PEC researchers “burrow down” in trade press advertisements and reports and “listen in” to the frank, insider discussions therein. This article evaluates the trade press against Scott’s four “quality control criteria” for documentary sources—authenticity, credibility, representativeness, and meaning. There are few museums in the western half of the United States that provide an opportunity to educate the public about the history of mental health care. Recently, a mental health museum and archive of artifacts, photographs, and documents was established on the grounds of Patton State Hospital in Highland, California. The purpose of this paper is to reflect on the establishment of this museum and archive and to provide an account of the 125 year history of Patton State Hospital.
