The Cities Do Need Help, Chester Smolski Dec 1986

The Cities Do Need Help, Chester Smolski

Smolski Texts

"The lead editorial in the Providence Sunday Journal of December 7, 1986 is completely off the mark and deserves to be answered. The attitude expressed by the writer conveys the specious view that because our nation's cities are not being burned down or torn apart by race riots at the present time then things are not really all that bad in our urban centers."

Catching Glimpses Of Life On Westminster Mall, Chester Smolski Dec 1986

Catching Glimpses Of Life On Westminster Mall, Chester Smolski

Smolski Texts

"It is the best place to see what this country is about. It is the one place where people mix freely, whether rich or poor, black or white, young or old. And it is the one 'neighborhood' where residents from all other city neighborhoods meet on a common turf. This meeting place of residents, visitors, college students and workers is, of course, the downtown, or, in professional parlance, the central business district (CBD)."

Preliminary Study Of The Homeless In Omaha-Douglas County, Jeff Luke

Publications

Homelessness is not a new phenomenon. The period between the Civil War and World War I, for example, witnessed a large increase in predominantly male transients who followed an active labor market and formed a highly visible subcommunity called skid row. Today's homeless population, however, includes more women, children, and minorities and fewer single men and drifters than previous populations. In addition to changes in the demographic composition of the homeless population, most experts agree that the problem of homelessness is increasing.

Demographic Trends In Boston: Some Implications For Municipal Services, Margaret O'Brien

New England Journal of Public Policy

The City of Boston is gaining in population during the 1980s, after several decades of loss. During the current decade and beyond, population trends will bring increases in the number of children, adults between the ages of twenty-five and forty-four, and those aged seventy-five and over, along with declines among the older teenagers and college-age population, the more mature adults, and the younger elderly. A recent analysis of the income distribution indicates that while there were more well-to-do residents in Boston in 1985 than there were in 1980, there were also more poor and near poor. Average family income has …

Socioeconomic Indicators Of Women's Status In Developing Countries, 1970–1980, Constantina Safilios-Rothschild

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

From 1970–1980, several conferences were held and publications produced regarding the need to improve data collection on indicators of women’s status, as well as a number of publications offering concrete proposals for such improvements. During this period, the disaggregation of statistics by sex has expanded in many countries and indicators, and such disaggregated statistics are presented with increased frequency in international data compiled by United Nations specialized organizations. In addition, two major sets of statistics on the status of women have appeared. These statistics on socioeconomic indicators of the status of women in developing countries include statistics on men as …

Learning About Women And Urban Services In Latin America And The Caribbean, Marianne Schmink, Judith Bruce, Marilyn Kohn Jan 1986

Learning About Women And Urban Services In Latin America And The Caribbean, Marianne Schmink, Judith Bruce, Marilyn Kohn

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

In 1978 when the Population Council formulated a program to learn more about low-income urban women’s access to services, the dearth of information was striking, particularly in contrast to the emerging body of information delineating access to credit, extension, membership in rural institutions, and representation in local governments. Access to services was much less well-defined owing to the diverse cultures that meet in the urban environment, the mobility of city life, and the fluidity of households. Urban development planners, researchers, and those involved in community action projects in a number of South American cities were approached to find out what …
