"It is situated at the northern limit of New Hampshire's short 18-mile seacoast, a seacoast perhaps best known for its beaches at Hampton and Rye. It was founded in 1630 on the south bank of Piscataqua at a location where wild strawberries were common, and carried the name 'Strawbery Banke" until 1653 when its name was changed to Portsmouth. Today, New Hampshire's only seaport is actively engaged in preserving this heritage of more than three centuries and to retain an architectural charm rivaling that of any New England seaport community."

The advent of federal funding for rural social services during the late 1960s and 1970s brought about changes in the political organization of rural America. A host of new organizational actors, like Area Agencies on Aging and various local aging agencies were created in rural communities across the country, in the wake of Baker v. Carr with its “one man/one vote” principle and funding through programs like the Economic Opportunity Act and the Older Americans Act. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a small family counseling center as evaluated by the clients themselves. A questionnaire, designed and used by the National Family Service Association of America in 1970, was utilized as the measure for evaluation. A total of 46 clients comprised the sample group representing 25% of the population receiving questionnaires. Descriptive case data were collected and analyzed on the total population and compared to the sample. Results showed a marked deficiency in the number of minority and low-income groups both in requesting services and responding to the questionnaire. Agency services …

The York County Multiethnic Heritage project, administered by Dr. Joyce Pettigrew Berman of Winthrop’s English faculty, was made possible by a $38,000 grant from the Department of Health, Education and Welfare of the U.S. government. The purpose of the project was to study the total contributions of ethnic groups to the total cultural heritage of York County School District No. 3, the York County Nature Museum and the city of Rock Hill Recreation Department. The project, which began in July 1976, and ended June 30, 1977, focused on ethnic groups in the area: Southern Appalachian, African-American and Native American. The …
