Building Relationships With Aboriginal People: A Cultural Mapping Toolbox, (Brian) Jim Stewart, Julaine Allan

This article describes a cultural mapping tool developed specifically for working with Aboriginal people experiencing mental health problems. The tool has broad scope, drawing from ecological and systems approaches. It will assist social workers to understand cultural and family obligations and build relationships with Aboriginal service users. Students learning about cultural diversity have expressed concern about asking culturally-sensitive questions. Australian human service workers typically state they feel inadequate in addressing Aboriginal culture in their practice approaches. n Victoria, recent reforms to the child and family welfare system, through the introduction of the Children Youth and Families Act (2005), have significantly strengthened the principle of the ‘‘best interests’’ of the child. Giving substance to the principle, this legislation defines a set of standards and a practice framework to guide its application. This article describes the work of the Circle of Courage, a cross– cultural group committed to improving the cultural competence of organizations providing services to Aboriginal populations in a midsized city in Canada. Rather than concentrating on indi- viduals’ cultural competence, the Circle targets mainstream orga- nizations. Many of its activities, therefore, require organizations to examine themselves and make systemic changes. Providing support to Aboriginal staff of mainstream organizations is a significant element of the Circle’s initiatives. The Experience Of Urban Aboriginals With Health Care Services In Canada, Ron Levin, Margot Herbert

This exploratory study investigates the experience of Cana- dian Urban Aboriginal persons as consumers of health care services. Re- sults highlight significant gaps in the training, skills, and knowledge of health care providers to optimally serve their Aboriginal patients. Also, sev- eral programs which are potentially most problematic for Aboriginal pa- tients are identified. The discussion outlines important roles for hospital social workers in improving the care provided to urban Aboriginal patients.
