Assessing The Implicit Curriculum In Social Work Education: An Examination Of The University Of Northern Iowa Students' Experiences, Madison Motz
Honors Program Theses
As part of a social work program’s accreditation process, social work programs across the United States are now being asked to assess their implicit curriculum, defined as the educational environment in which the explicit curriculum is presented, as new evidence has shown that implicit curriculum plays an important role in the learning, development, and professional outcome of social work students. Following the wake of a series of student diversity-related injustices across the state of Iowa, our team set out to create an implicit curriculum survey tool shaped by the experiences, concerns, and feedback presented by students within the social work …

The Effects Of Adverse Childhood Experiences On Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder In Post 9/11 Combat Veterans, Rebecca Brown
The Effects Of Adverse Childhood Experiences On Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder In Post 9/11 Combat Veterans, Rebecca Brown
Annual Graduate Student Symposium
Objective: To determine whether Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) predicts the development of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) among post 9/11 combat Veterans who served in Iraq or Afghanistan. Rationale: PTSD is a diagnosis found among a high percentage of combat Veterans who experience trauma while deployed. As research shows, trauma during childhood can affect and increase the trauma related to deployment and combat. This research paper expands upon the current literature that demonstrates a relationship between childhood trauma and trauma experienced among combat Veterans while deployed, as the results may benefit military branches in improving mental health services to service members. …

The Use Of Meditation And Yoga As A Treatment Tool For Juvenile Offenders In Residential Treatment Centers For Relapse Prevention, Danielle K. W. Ballard-Green
The Use Of Meditation And Yoga As A Treatment Tool For Juvenile Offenders In Residential Treatment Centers For Relapse Prevention, Danielle K. W. Ballard-Green
Graduate Research Papers
Although crime has continued to decline over the last decade, the incarceration of minority youth happens at higher rates compared to their white counterparts. Incarcerated youth face trauma at high rates. Trauma can impact an individual's behavior and response to stress. Many incarcerated youth have substance use disorders (SUDs) and a relapse of substance use can result in a relapse of criminal behavior. When a youth is heavily immersed within the juvenile justice system, they are often placed within residential treatment centers (RTC). There are minimal treatment approaches that are successful within RTCs; they do not address the difficulty the …
Disability, Gender, And Employment Relationships In Africa: The Case Of Ghana, Augustina Naami
Disability, Gender, And Employment Relationships In Africa: The Case Of Ghana, Augustina Naami
Faculty Publications
The exploratory quantitative study sought to develop an understanding about the relationships among disability, gender and employment in Northern Ghana. A total of 110 individuals with disabilities (20–60 years) from various disability groups participated in the study. The results indicate that many persons with disabilities are unemployed, the majority being women. Discrimination is cited as the greatest barrier to the employment of persons with disabilities, particularly women. The majority of persons with disabilities, typically women, live in poverty; given that some are unemployed and those who are employed worked mostly in marginal, seasonal and menial jobs. Persons with disabilities also …

Influx Of Child Immigrants To The United States: Policy & Practice Implications, Megan Vogt
Influx Of Child Immigrants To The United States: Policy & Practice Implications, Megan Vogt
Graduate Research Papers
Beginning in 2012, an influx of immigrant children from the countries of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras arrived in the United States from their home countries searching for safety and security. As the federal government stepped in to help place the children throughout the states, the governor of Iowa made a stance refusing to provide funding to these children leaving non-profits and faith-based organizations to provide the necessary resources. This study examines the options, services, and resources the children have accessed or are capable of accessing after arriving in the United States. Through interviews with agencies, groups, and organizations in …

Rational Choice And Moral Decision-Making In Research, Anita M. Gordon
Rational Choice And Moral Decision-Making In Research, Anita M. Gordon
Faculty Publications
University psychology and sociology researchers rated the likelihood they would engage in misconduct as described in 9 research scenarios, while also making moral judgments and rating the likelihood of discovery and sanctions. Multiple regression revealed significant effects across various scenarios for moral judgment as well as shame and embarrassment on reducing misconduct. The effects on misconduct of the perceived probability of sanctions were conditioned on moral judgments in some scenarios. The results have implications for how universities address the prevention, detection, and sanctioning of research misconduct.

Stress And Coping Behavior : The Effects Of Poverty On Women And Children, Laura J. Sorensen Lyons
Graduate Research Papers
The following paper reviews research on poverty, its effects on women and their children, and how they cope with the increased level of stress. There are more single headed households now than ever, the majority headed by women. This adds an increased level of stress on both the women and the children they care for. Research also shows that a large number of these families are also coping with the special needs of their children. This stress leads many women and children to cope in some conventional and unconventional ways.
Schools are playing an increasingly larger role in the lives …
Trends In Family-Centered Early Intervention, Jody Lee Albertson
Trends In Family-Centered Early Intervention, Jody Lee Albertson
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Family-centered early intervention services have been evolving for quite some time, and the role of the family in intervention for children with disabilities has changed drastically. Part C of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) mandated the family-centeredness of early intervention services, which is evident in the services and supports a family receives, the Individualized Family Services Plan document, and service coordination activities. The Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) then conducts compliance monitoring to gauge whether states are in compliance with IDEA. State monitoring reports are available to the public online.
The purpose of this study was to …
