Victim And Offender Correlates Of Elder Abuse And Mistreatment: Research For Future Prevention, Howard M. Henderson
Victim And Offender Correlates Of Elder Abuse And Mistreatment: Research For Future Prevention, Howard M. Henderson
Howard M Henderson
Elder abuse is a crime that is often misunderstood, under detected, and improperly processed. While definitions of this abuse are clear within most states, the knowledge that most elder abuse occurs at the hands of those the victim most trusts–their friends and family–is seldom understood by the public. Further, many professionals lack the training to effectively assess and detect elder abuse. Most underlying indicators of such abuse have specific correlates based on both victim and offender characteristics. Persons in various human service professions must be trained on those characteristics and the dynamics that tend to enable an abusive relationship to …

Bullying And Aggression On The School Bus: School Bus Drivers' Observations And Suggestions, Ellen Delara
Bullying And Aggression On The School Bus: School Bus Drivers' Observations And Suggestions, Ellen Delara
Ellen deLara
Every school day bus drivers are responsible for transporting children safely over many miles, yet they are rarely polled for their opinions or contributions to school safety. School bus drivers are in a unique position to inform the discussion on aggressive behavior during the school day. This exploratory study collected information from school bus drivers about student behavior on their buses and drivers’ perceptions of school administrators’ interest in their input. Thirty bus drivers from suburban and rural school districts in upstate New York participated in this action-research inquiry. Data were gathered from surveys and semistructured individual interviews. Participants provided …

Developing A Philosophy About Bullying And Sexual Harassment: Cognitive Coping Strategies Among High School Students, Ellen Delara
Ellen deLara
Bullying or harassment are a part of the everyday experience of many school children in the U.S. Bullying can take many forms and, while not acceptable, is considered almost inevitable. Despite exposure to various anti-bullying programs instituted in the schools, bullying persists and students must figure out how to deal with this phenomenon. This exploratory study investigated the views of secondary school students on bullying and harassment as well as their strategies for handling this form of peer interaction. One hundred twenty-two students (N = 122) from three rural high schools participated in this action research inquiry. The data were …

during the last years of life that focuses on the emotional, spiritual, and practical aspects of life and relationship completion and closure. This study evaluated the effectiveness of CGLE in improving three major outcomes: comfort with caregiving, closure, and caregiver gain. Family caregivers (n = 2,025) participated in programs facilitated by health and human service professionals (n = 142) who completed a CGLE train-the-trainer workshop conducted by The Hospice Institute of the Florida Suncoast. The caregivers completed training rosters and pre- and/or post-surveys. Group differences are reported in baseline characteristics and change in three outcomes for caregivers who completed 1) …
Reproductive Decision Making Among Lesbian Women, Misty Wall
Reproductive Decision Making Among Lesbian Women, Misty Wall
Misty Wall
A non-experimental, survey design was used to determine which factors influence a lesbian woman’s decision to have, or not have, a child. Data was collected via the internet from 373 adult women, who self identify as lesbian. This study was guided by feminist theory and attempts to connect existing empirical literature regarding decision making with the experiences of lesbian women.
Review of existing theoretical and empirical literature regarding decision making and lesbian headed families showed that six factors; family of origin support, extrinsic religiosity, perceived ability to parent, internalized homophobia, perceived impact of motherhood, and fear of prejudice and discrimination …

Screening, Diagnosis, And Treatment Of Depression In Patients With End-Stage Renal Disease, Scott D. Cohen, Lorenzo Norris, Kimberly D. Acquaviva, Rolf A. Peterson, Paul L. Kimmel
Kimberly D. Acquaviva, PhD, MSW
Depression is common in patients with end-stage renal disease and has been linked to increased mortality. Screening for depression in the general medical population remains controversial; however, given the high prevalence of depression and its significant impact on morbidity and mortality, a strong case for depression screening in patients with end-stage renal disease can be made. Several studies have been performed to validate the more common depression screening measures in patients with chronic kidney disease. The Beck Depression Inventory, the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression, the Nine-Question Patient Health Questionnaire, and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale are some …
An Exploratory Study Of The Role Of Kinship Ties In Promoting Resilience Among African American Adult Children Of Alcoholics, J. Camille Hall
An Exploratory Study Of The Role Of Kinship Ties In Promoting Resilience Among African American Adult Children Of Alcoholics, J. Camille Hall
J. Camille Hall, PhD., LCSW
This study utilized a multi-method design that integrated both qualitative and quantitative methods. The study sought to identify differences in kinship social support, self-esteem, and coping responses between African American college students who identify themselves as adult children of alcoholic parents (ACOAs) and adult children of on alcoholic parents (non-ACOAs) at two separate universities. The results indicate that ACOAs utilized more effective coping responses than non-ACOAs and there were no differences in levels of self-esteem and kinship social support. Personal constructs of adult children of alcoholics (ACOAs)’ coping responses while living with an alcoholic parent and/or caregiver were investigated using …
Resilient Parenting: Overcoming Poor Parental Bonding, W. Travis, Terri Combs-Orme
Resilient Parenting: Overcoming Poor Parental Bonding, W. Travis, Terri Combs-Orme
Terri Combs-Orme
This study identified groups of mothers with varying patterns of adaptive functioning and bonds with their own parents. These patterns were related to mothers' parenting of their own children to understand how some mothers avoid repeating the cycle of poor parenting. Data from 210 new mothers were analyzed before hospital discharge about bonding with their caregivers during childhood and six to 12 months later about adaptive functioning, life circumstances, and parenting. Latent cluster analysis identified four distinct groups of mothers with regard to parental bonds and adaptive functioning: positive-adaptive mothers (good bonding and good adaptive functioning), positive-maladaptive mothers (good bonding …

New Mothers’ Psychological Experience And Behavioral Interactions With Their Infants In The First 12 Months, Timothy Page, Terri Combs-Orme, Daphne S. Cain
Terri Combs-Orme
We examined the psychological dimensions of parents’ perceptions of their infant children and their own abilities as parents at two observation points in a racially and socio-economically diverse sample of 174 mothers. Parenting perceptions and life circumstances were hypothesized to predict interactive behavior observed in the home. Baseline assessments were conducted in hospital, within 36 hr of delivery. Follow-up assessments were conducted in their homes when the children were 6 to 12 months old. Of five major psychological constructs studied, only parents’ perceptions of children, represented particularly by empathic responsiveness and absence of role-reversal, predicted the quality of behavioral interactions …
Between Charity, Welfare, And Warfare: A Disability Legal Studies Analysis Of Privilege And Neglect In Israeli Disability Policy, Sagit Mor
Sagit Mor
This article introduces a critical perspective, which I term Disability Legal Studies, a field of critical legal theory that employs disability critique, as developed by Disability Studies. I argue that contemporary writing on disability and the law tends to utilize disability critique in a mere instrumental fashion, mainly to support doctrinal analysis or reform proposals. What is needed, I suggest, is substantial research regarding the constitutive role of law in the production of disability. The article investigates the construction of disability in the field of social welfare, claiming that although welfare has indeed provided some relief to people with disabilities, …

Poverty And The Daily Lives Of Infants, Terri Combs-Orme, Daphne S. Cain
Poverty And The Daily Lives Of Infants, Terri Combs-Orme, Daphne S. Cain
Terri Combs-Orme
It has been amply demonstrated that poor children suffer disadvantages as compared to their more advantaged peers. This paper examines important aspects of infants’ daily experiences in a southeastern city in the United States in order to illustrate differences between poor and non-poor infants. ‘‘Poor’’ infants were compared to their ‘‘non-poor’’ counterparts on the quality of parenting they received; quality of their home environments; relative health and safety; stability, structure, and predictability of their daily lives; and exposure to diverse experiences in the community. Findings reveal that poor infants are at a consistent disadvantage across all domains when compared to …

Validation Of The Caregiving At Life’S End Questionnaire, Jennifer R. Salmon, Jung Kwak, Kimberly D. Acquaviva, Kathleen A. Egan, Katherine E. Brandt
Kimberly D. Acquaviva, PhD, MSW
The researchers in this study developed and validated a questionnaire to measure the needs of end-of-life (EOL) caregivers. The model is used to facilitate meaningful and supportive experiences for both the patient and caregiver. The questionnaire was developed using existing scales of meaning, self acceptance, burden, and gain as well as new scales of caregiver comfort, importance of caregiving tasks, and caregiver closure. The sample included 34 current and 17 bereaved caregivers affiliated with The Hospice Institute of the Florida Suncoast. The scales performed well in terms of concurrent validity, internal consistency, and reliability.

Transformative Aspects Of Caregiving At Life's End, Jennifer Salmon, Jung Kwak, Kimberly D. Acquaviva, Katherine Brandt, Kathleen Egan
Kimberly D. Acquaviva, PhD, MSW
We do not know to what extent the needs of caregivers involved with patients at the end of life are being met by care providers and whether caregiving at life’s end can be a positive experience. We used the Hospice Experience Model of Care as a framework for understanding the effect of transformative tasks on caregiving at life’s end. We compared current and bereaved caregivers and then, holding background characteristics constant, tested the independent effects of three transformative mediators: self-acceptance, meaning, and closure, as well as comfort with caregiving on several stressors when explaining differences in caregiver burden and gain. …
