Guidance from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence in the UK was introduced in 2015 to improve the quality of the care pathway of transfers of care home residents to hospital when needed. The Red Bag scheme was developed by Sutton Clinical Commissioning Group in 2016 as a means of improving communication between organisations involved in the process by ensuring residents’ notes and other personal belongings were easily identifiable and kept in one place. This study examines social care workers experiences and knowledge in supporting young people living in residential care cope with the associated trauma of exposure to domestic violence in their pre-care history. Understanding the effect trauma can have on a young person living in residential care is a vital component of social care practice. A qualitative research methodology was implemented to gather the data from social care practitioners working in residential care with young people, involving three focus groups and one semi-structured interview. The field placement is core to the education of social care practitioners and practice teachers’ behaviours influence the learning and development of future practitioners. However the practice teacher role is complex with responsibilities to the agency, clients and the student (Davys & Beddoe, 2000). Twenty practice teachers were interviewed individually about their views of their role, in particular what they saw as most and least important. Based in Tallaght West, CDI is the result of the professionalism, passion and persistence of a group of 23 concerned individuals and organisations living and working in the community who had a vision of a better place for children.
