City On A Hill: A Reflection On Christian Ethic And Human Morality, Mayce Combs
City On A Hill: A Reflection On Christian Ethic And Human Morality, Mayce Combs
Helm's School of Government Conference - American Revival: Citizenship & Virtue
In John Winthrop’s sermon A Model of Christian Charity (1630), he spoke to his congregation of the mission God had called them to. With the creation of a new blended nation, the only way to be exceptional was to reflect the gospel in policy, action, and foremost thought. Philosophers from ancient times to today acknowledge that an individual is made up of the soul and their body. From the soul, comes thought, reason, empathy, and a connection to a divine being who deciphers what is morally unjust. The body is a sinful, self-seeking vessel that does not have the ability …
Global Criminal Justice Practices And Public Safety, Rachel Hwang
Global Criminal Justice Practices And Public Safety, Rachel Hwang
Posters-at-the-Capitol
Popular political discourse in the U.S. assumes that more funding for law enforcement and prison facilities will make civilians safer, presumably by reducing crime and sense of disorder. However, studies have shown that the relationship between these factors may not be as straightforward. With the killing of George Floyd and increased media coverage of police brutality, existing literature focuses mainly on the relationship between police and crime in the U.S. The impact of incarceration (the result of procedural justice) on the community (for whom procedural justice exists) is less known, especially on a global scale. We argue that cycling people …
Political Compromise In America: Why Are Americans So Politically Divided And What Can Be Done To Prevent A Fractured Nation, Zachary Cary
Political Compromise In America: Why Are Americans So Politically Divided And What Can Be Done To Prevent A Fractured Nation, Zachary Cary
Helm's School of Government Conference - American Revival: Citizenship & Virtue
Ask anyone who is politically active what they believe to be the biggest problem in politics today. More often than not, Americans tend to blame the failing parts of society on the stubbornness of the opposing political party. This generally opens up the floor to asking questions about whether individuals are willing to listen to members of the opposing party discuss their points of view, and unfortunately, many will choose not to listen at all, having already decided that they are wrong and there is no possibility of coming to a middle ground between the two points of view. People …
Open Data Indicates That Collegedale Could Be A Bluezone, Tristan Deschamps, Alva Johnson
Open Data Indicates That Collegedale Could Be A Bluezone, Tristan Deschamps, Alva Johnson
Campus Research Day
A blue zone is an indicator of exceptional health in a community. Adventists have a blue zone community in Loma Linda, but there has been little research into other Adventist populated areas that could be blue zones. Therefore, our goal is to show that open data suggests that a blue zone may exist near Southern Adventist University, specifically in Collegedale. This data has been gathered from different federal sources, including, the CDC, the US Census Bureau, the Tennessee Department of Health, official state records, and federal documents that are available to the public.
The Effect Of Covid-19 On Depression In Hispanic Vs. Non-Hispanic Populations In South Jersey, Rana Cheikhali, Daniel Casal
The Effect Of Covid-19 On Depression In Hispanic Vs. Non-Hispanic Populations In South Jersey, Rana Cheikhali, Daniel Casal
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
The COVID-19 pandemic has been challenging for Americans and the world as a whole. It has especially taken a toll on mental health. Studies show that the incidence of depression in the United States was three times greater during the pandemic compared to pre-pandemic times. One specific community in the United States that has been greatly affected by the pandemic is the Hispanic American community. Many Americans across the country have received federal surveys that aim to determine the social and economic impacts of COVID-19. Results revealed that the Hispanic population had the greatest rise in mental illness, with 40% …

A Statistical Study Into Mobile Phone Screen Time Usage Among College Students, Abd'malik Hakeem-Olowu, Akeisha Belgrave
Harrisburg University Research Symposium: Highlighting Research, Innovation, & Creativity
Given that we live in a technological age, it should come as no surprise that the majority, if not all, college students own a mobile device, which they use for school, work, or even recreational purposes. Life would be difficult without relying on a mobile device. Our focus in this study was on cell phones. We surveyed a hundred Harrisburg University students' daily screen time to analyze and make a conclusion if the relationship positively or negatively affects the lifestyle of college students. (Class Project)

The Program To Reduce Implicit Bias In Carroll Hospital Center Using The Implicit Association Test, Katherine E. Traynor
Capstone Showcase
Natural brain processes make all individuals susceptible to unconscious bias; however, stressful, fearful, or anger-evoking situations as well as the negative influence of media and social surroundings increase the risk of holding obstructive bias, and there is a greater risk of being negatively impacted by this phenomenon when belonging to a minority population (Rose & Flores, 2020). As a result, high rates of infant mortality (10.2 deaths per 1,000 live births for the Non-Hispanic Black population compared to 4.1 in the White population) and cardiovascular related diseases (190.0 cases per 1,000 in the Non-Hispanic Black population compared to 161.3 in …
Pornography: Social, Emotional And Mental Implications Among Adolescents, William Kelly Canady
Pornography: Social, Emotional And Mental Implications Among Adolescents, William Kelly Canady
National Youth Advocacy and Resilience Conference
This presentation will explain the historical development of pornography. It will highlight four segments: 1- Porn’s impact on brain development of reward pathways, ultimately increasing the appetite for more porn. 2- Porn can be a false substitute for real intimacy, resulting in decreased sexual satisfaction with a real person and increased verbal and physical aggression. 3- Porn promotes sex trafficking, promotes multiple sex partners and reduced STD prevention. 4- A review of interventions available to assist clients in navigating a lifestyle away from pornography.

“I’Ll Have What She’S Having!”: Depictions Of Orgasm In Heterosexual Pornography Labeled For Female Consumption, Kelley Anne Ambrose
Capstone Showcase
This research paper aims to discuss and bring awareness to orgasm representation within heterosexual pornography that is specifically labeled for female consumption. Major areas of focus are on the orgasm gap and clitoral stimulation, sexual satisfaction in heterosexual relationships, and aggressive and violent behaviors depicted in pornography and sexual interactions. These areas are crucial because current research is lacking; it is necessary for more research to be conducted that focuses on orgasm representation and satisfaction. If realistic depictions of sexual intercourse are shown in pornographic content, it may bring expectations for consumers that could lead to higher rates of sexual …
Project-Based Learning In Social Statistics: Direct And Indirect Assessment Of Student Learning Outcomes, Zachary Weland, Nicole Marshall
Project-Based Learning In Social Statistics: Direct And Indirect Assessment Of Student Learning Outcomes, Zachary Weland, Nicole Marshall
Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium
The two co-authors were students in this statistics course last year and initiated this project based on their observation that some of their peers struggled with the course content. Statistics education literature suggests anxiety and low sense of self-efficacy related to learning statistics are significant barriers to student engagement and learning in undergraduate social statistics courses. We designed and implemented a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) intervention in a social statistics course in Spring 2020. Preliminary analyses from our ongoing project includes both direct and indirect assessment of student learning (demonstrated student learning and statistics anxiety and efficacy, respectively) among a sample …
392— Hegemonic Masculinity And The Partisan Gender Gap: Implications For American Democracy, Emily Pascale
392— Hegemonic Masculinity And The Partisan Gender Gap: Implications For American Democracy, Emily Pascale
GREAT Day Posters
There is a growing body of evidence that shows a correlation between gender inequality and economic inequality. Often these highly unequal societies, such as the US, have stringent gender norms that disparately affect how men and women think and behave, including the kinds of political opinions they express. My research will focus on the implications of divergent gender norms for American democracy, particularly for proposals aimed at redressing economic inequality. Because this normative behavior has gendered the perceptions of political parties and policies—such as men cognitively linking redistributive policies to a feminine ethos—these gendered ideas may undermine policies that have …

Nonresident Fathers’ Care-Provision Trajectory: Growth Mixture Modeling Approach, Kwangman Ko
Southeastern Council on Family Relations Conference
The current study identified subgroups of individuals regarding nonresident fathers’ childcare provision by taking the growth mixture modeling approach (GMM) and Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (FFCWS; wave 1 to wave 5). The three-profile model was the most fitted model, where Profile 1 (n = 548, 68.7%) showed the lowest childcare across waves, and Profile 3 (n = 106, 13.3%) was the most involved group, and the Profile 2 (n = 144, 18.0%) showed moderate levels of care provision (see Figure 1). Follow-up analysis revealed that the profiles significantly differed on child gender and …

Visualizing Election Results With Arcgis, Ryan Day
Purdue GIS Day
In 2018, Porter County, Indiana held its municipal elections concurrent with the national midterm elections. Using ArcGIS, the election results for the fourway race for the Duneland School Board at-large seat are mapped. These results are compared to other area election results, voter characteristics, and previous election results to try to visualize the correlation between factors affecting the race, including candidate ideology, geographic base, area demographics, turnout, and national electoral trends. This project serves as a demonstration of how GIS software can improve the understanding of what influences voters and election outcomes.

This study reports the prevalence of problematic gambling in Santiago de Chile for the period 2015-2018. Two household-based surveys were implemented in the metropolitan area of Santiago de Chile in 2015 and 2018 in order to assess changes on the prevalence, characteristics and severity of gambling (n=1030 each; SE=2,2% for a CI=95%). Severity of gambling was measured using the NODS scale.
Results show that during the analysed period the percentage of at-risk players has increased, passing from 14,3% to 16,1%, among them, we identified a decrease in the prevalence of pathological gamblers, passing from 2,4% to 1,4%. We also identify …
A New Paradigm Of Discrimination And Measures Of Latino Linked Fate, Michael Herndon
A New Paradigm Of Discrimination And Measures Of Latino Linked Fate, Michael Herndon
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Linked fate has long been used as a measure of group consciousness and is an important component of group political behavior. Though applying linked fate to Latinos can be complicated because of a widely diverse set of nationalities and historical contexts, Latinos have shown signs of group cohesion under certain circumstances. Despite this, there is still a sizable gap exploring the theory of linked fate as it pertains to Latinos. Furthermore, there is a near-absence of literature that critically dissects the roles of different kinds of discrimination as they pertain to perceptions of linked fate amongst Latinos. There are distinct …

Factors Of Student Success, Vanessa Beck
Celebration of Learning
The purpose of my study is to understand student success in college. I focused a large amount of my research around extracurricular activities out of the classroom, which include clubs, sports, faculty interaction, employment, and time spent on preparation for classes. In order to understand student success, I sent out a survey to 200 students enrolled in Augustana to evaluate their responses to see what they spent their time doing. I paid close attention to the number of hours students spend on various activities each day. The results allowed me to understand student habits, and how their involvement in extracurriculars, …

Doing Greater Good, While Doing No Individual Harm: A Public Health Approach To Human Trafficking Using A Human Rights-Centered Model, Patrick L. Kerr, Rachel Dash
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
Human trafficking (i.e., modern slavery) includes myriad forms of sex and labor trafficking. Widely ranging estimates of the prevalence of human trafficking are commonly cited; at the same time, accurate data on these phenomena remain elusive, and assumptions rather than empirical evidence about the nature, targets, and proliferation of trafficking often dominate public policy discourse.
In this paper, we describe the ways in which this lack of accurate data on basic prevalence rates has led to key limitations in anti-trafficking work. First, this lack of data prevents a clear understanding of the problem of trafficking. Second, this deficit limits our …
The Effect Of Leader Behavior On After-Action Review Outcomes, Kelly Prange
The Effect Of Leader Behavior On After-Action Review Outcomes, Kelly Prange
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Organizational safety concerns are a critical issue for firefighters. Interventions such as after-action reviews (AARs) may be implemented within firefighter teams to facilitate sensemaking and learning, as well as to foster safety norms. The current study investigated AAR leaders in a Midwest fire department and how their behavior improves individual perceptions of AAR quality, thereby influencing how firefighters perceive team and organizational safety norms. Building upon high-reliability organization theory and theories on the influence of leadership on culture, career firefighters were surveyed to test the mediation model. Results indicated that good AAR leader behaviors promote positive team and organizational safety …
Volunteer Perceptions Of Upward And Downward Communication Facilitate Organizational Commitment, Kelly Prange
Volunteer Perceptions Of Upward And Downward Communication Facilitate Organizational Commitment, Kelly Prange
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Retaining productive volunteers is an essential issue nonprofit organizations face, as volunteers help extend the services of their target populations. The current study examined upward and downward communication and training as important volunteer management practices with respect to facilitating volunteer engagement and commitment. Using social exchange theory as a framework, the present study investigated the reasons why organizations should stress giving volunteers training and open communication and soliciting feedback from volunteers. Doing so may initiate a social exchange relationship in which volunteers receive training and communication from organizations and in turn become more engaged and committed to the organization. As …

This research project looks at the relationships between segregation by socio-economic status, race & ethnicity, and the location of assisted living facilities in the state of Washington. We know that segregation affects a variety of living conditions and life chances and outcomes, such as employment, housing, and school success rates. We lack research, however, on the effects of segregation on the location of assisted living facilities. Are assisted living homes being located in heavily segregated neighborhoods? Assisted living homes are not subject to the standard regulations that a nursing home is, and often the residents of these homes are not …
