Previous studies have confirmed significant removal of various trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) by white-rot fungal cultures under sterile batch test conditions. However, little is known about TrOC removal in continuous flow fungal reactors in a non-sterile environment. This study reports the removal of two TrOCs, namely, bisphenol A and diclofenac, by a fungal membrane bioreactor (MBR).

Supplier evaluation has become a significant topic over the past few decades, as companies have become more outsourced oriented. However, previous research on this topic has not paid adequate attention to the limitations associated with the availability of accurate and reliable data relating to the performance of potential suppliers. In an attempt to address this issue, this paper proposes a novel supplier evaluation model that can handle imprecise quantitative and qualitative data. Additionally, Decision Maker's judgement regarding both qualitative and quantitative criteria are incorporated into this model so that a more comprehensive and realistic assessment of supplier performance can be …

Novel Modulation And Control Strategy For Five-Level Anpc Converter With Unbalanced Dc Voltage Applied To A Single-Phase Grid Connected Pv System, Hamid R. Teymour, Danny Sutanto, Kashem M. Muttaqi, Phil Ciufo

Dr Philip Ciufo

This paper proposes a new control strategy and a novel modulation technique for a grid-connected photo-voltaic (PV) system using a single-phase five-level flying capacitor (FC) based active-neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) converter. The proposed modulator can control the FC voltage to follow the requested reference value and simultaneously generate the required ac output voltage regardless of the values of the dc capacitor voltages of the converter. By implementing this method, smaller values of dc-link and flying capacitors can be used even in applications that could experience ripple or transient in the capacitors voltage. In the grid-connected single-phase five-level ANPC, where the capacitors can …

Microbeam Radiation Therapy (MRT) is a radiation treatment technique under development for inoperable brain tumors. MRT is based on the use of a synchrotron generated X-ray beam with an extremely high dose rate ( ~ 20 kGy/sec), striated into an array of X-ray micro-blades. In order to advance to clinical trials, a real-time dosimeter with excellent spatial resolution must be developed for absolute dosimetry. The design of a real-time dosimeter for such a radiation scenario represents a significant challenge due to the high photon flux and vertically striated radiation field, leading to very steep lateral dose gradients. This article analyses …

Novel Experimental Setup For Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometry Ion Detection In Collisions Of Anionic Species With Neutral Gas-Phase Molecular Targets, J C. Oller, L Ellis-Gibbings, F Ferreira Da Silva, Paulo Limao-Vieira, Gustavo Garcia

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We report a novel experimental setup for studying collision induced products resulting from the interaction of anionic beams with a neutral gas-phase molecular target. The precursor projectile was admitted into vacuum through a commercial pulsed valve, with the anionic beam produced in a hollow cathode discharge-induced plasma, and guided to the interaction region by a set of deflecting plates where it was made to interact with the target beam. Depending on the collision energy regime, negative and positive species can be formed in the collision region and ions were time-of-flight (TOF) mass-analysed. Here, we present data on O-2 precursor projectile, …

Increasing demand of electrical energy has leaded to utilization of more and more Distributed generation (DG) sources in distribution systems. Since the locations and capacities of the DG sources connected to the distribution system profoundly impact on reducing system loss and improving system reliability, so placement and sizing indication of DGs is the most substantial process in distribution systems. By adding the reliability objective to this problem, it becomes more complicated than before and it needs to be solved with an accurate algorithm. To this reason, to solve the proposed problem a new approach based on the mixture of two …

Interface Analysis And Hot Deformation Behaviour Of A Novel Laminated Composite With High-Cr Cast Iron And Low Carbon Steel Prepared By Hot Compression Bonding, Zhengyi Jiang, Xingjian Gao, Sheng-Li Li, Hong Mei Zhang, Dengfu Chen, Jian Zhong Xu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A hot compression bonding process was developed to prepare a novel laminated composite consisting of high-Cr cast iron (HCCI) as the inner layer and low carbon steel (LCS) as the outer layers on a Gleeble 3500 thermomechanical simulator at a temperature of 950 °C and a strain rate of 0.001 S-1. Interfacial bond quality and hot deformation behaviour of the laminate were studied by microstructural characterisation and mechanical tests. Experimental results show that the metallurgical bond between the constituent metals was achieved under the proposed bonding conditions without discernible defects and the formation of interlayer or intermetallic layer …

A Novel Mobility-Based Routing Protocol For Semi-Predictable Disruption Tolerant Networks, Saeid Iranmanesh, Kwan-Wu Chin Jan 2015

A Novel Mobility-Based Routing Protocol For Semi-Predictable Disruption Tolerant Networks, Saeid Iranmanesh, Kwan-Wu Chin

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This letter considers routing in delay tolerant networks whereby nodes have semi-predictable mobility patterns within a time period. We propose a mobility-based routing protocol (MBRP) where nodes construct a space-time graph dynamically. As the space-time graph may be incomplete, MBRP presents a heuristic that evaluates encountered nodes based on their recorded mobility patterns in order to disseminate a finite number of bundle replicas. Simulation results, over a service quality metric comprising of delivery, delay and overhead, show that MBRP achieves up to 105 % improvement as compared to four well-known routing protocols. Finally, MBRP is capable of achieving 50 % …

Novel Reversible And Switchable Electrolytes Based On Magneto-Rheology, Jie Ding, Gangrou Peng, Kewei Shu, Caiyun Wang, Tongfei Tian, Wenrong Yang, Yuanchao Zhang, Gordon G. Wallace, Weihua Li

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Replacing organic liquid electrolytes with solid electrolytes has led to a new perspective on batteries, enabling high-energy battery chemistry with intrinsically safe cell designs. However, most solid/gel electrolytes are easily deformed; under extreme deformation, leakage and/or short-circuiting can occur. Here, we report a novel magneto-rheological electrolyte (MR electrolyte) that responds to changes in an external magnetic field; the electrolyte exhibits low viscosity in the absence of a magnetic field and increased viscosity or a solid-like phase in the presence of a magnetic field. This change from a liquid to solid does not significantly change the conductivity of the MR electrolyte. …

Development Of A Novel Variable Stiffness And Damping Magnetorheological Fluid Damper, Shuaishuai Sun, Jian Yang, Weihua Li, Huaxia Deng, Haiping Du, Gursel Alici

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper reports a novel magnetorheological fluid (MRF)-based damper, which synergizes the attributes of variable stiffness and damping through the compact assembly of two MRF damping units and a spring. The magnetic field densities of the two damping units were analyzed. After the prototype of the new MRF damper, a hydraulically actuated MTS machine was used to test the damper's performance, including stiffness variability and damping variability, amplitudedependent responses and frequency-dependent responses. A new mathematical model was developed to describe the variable stiffness and damping MRF damper. The successful development, experimental testing and modeling of this innovative variable stiffness and …

Robust Position Control Of A Novel Series Elastic Actuator Via Disturbance Observer, Emre Sariyildiz, Gong Chen, Haoyong Yu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

This paper proposes a new robust position control method for a novel series elastic actuator (SEA). It is a wellknown fact that SEAs provide many benefits in force control, e.g., lower reflected inertia and impedance, greater shock tolerance, safety, and so on. However, current SEA designs have a common performance limitation due to the compromise on the selection of spring stiffness. The performance of an SEA can be significantly improved by changing the stiffness of the spring; however, designing a variable-stiffness SEA is a quite challenging task. In this paper, a novel variable-stiffness SEA, which can relax the fundamental performance …
