For the acceptance of future network-based media services the technical advancement of the man-machine interface is of great importance. The Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and In- novation Research (ISI) in Karlsruhe has conducted an expert survey on different acceptance factors, on the future development of media usage behavior, on network infrastructure and terminal devices as well as on the expected market development. Drawing on the results we point out perspectives in the light of today’s user needs and the technical possibilities.

This article reviews the shaping forces in the last 30 years of Internet develop- ment. A case in point is the convergence of media, computers and telecom, of which the Internet has always been an important aspect. This historical process, which is widely recognized as at once technical, industrial and political, has been and will continue to be fiercely multi-party and multi-faceted. There are a variety of technical alternatives being fought over.
