Technology On The Factory Floor Iii: Technology Use And Training In Us Manufacturing Firms, Paul Swamidass Aug 1998

Technology On The Factory Floor Iii: Technology Use And Training In Us Manufacturing Firms, Paul Swamidass

Paul Swamidass

This is the third issue of the Technology on the Factory Floor series. The study was sponsored by the Manufacturing Institute and the National Science Foundation. Data for this study of manufacturing technology use was collected from 1,025 manufacturing plant managers during 1997 using a modified survey questionnaire originally used in the 1993 study.

The findings were: Since the 1993 study, inventory turnover increased, rejection and rework reduced, and cycle time and manufacturing costs decreased; overall, there was measurable improvement in manufacturing since 1993. Other findings were: larger plants use technologies more extensively than smaller plants; exporters use more manufacturing …

The Millennium Problem And The Marketplace Of Ideas: Insights Into Freedom, Responsibility, And Technological Development, Scott Devito, Dennis R. Cooley Jun 1998

The Millennium Problem And The Marketplace Of Ideas: Insights Into Freedom, Responsibility, And Technological Development, Scott Devito, Dennis R. Cooley

Scott DeVito

A close analysis of the Y2K problem provides valuable insight into the ethics of technology. We contend that the primary cause of the Y2K problem is a lack of, what John Stuart Mill calls, originality (and the related loss of freedom, diversity, and understanding) in the information technology (IT) industry. If the various IT companies had supported originality, then they would have empowered their employees to respond to the foreseen difficulties associated with the change of millennium long before these difficulties blossomed into the current worldwide problem. We contend that originality, which requires and nourishes both intellectual vigor and diversity, …

Logical Information Modeling Of Web-Accessible Heterogeneous Digital Assets, Kshitij Shah, Amit P. Sheth Apr 1998

Logical Information Modeling Of Web-Accessible Heterogeneous Digital Assets, Kshitij Shah, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

This paper introduces the MREF framework for representing and correlating information at a higher semantic level than is possible with Web-based information systems today. The role that metadata plays in this framework is described, together with a metadata based infrastructure to support our media independent information correlation paradigm. To keep it consistent with evolving standards, broader acceptance and ease of implementation, MREF abstraction is structured on top of RDF and XML. Its central role in the context of the InfoQuilt system, for exploiting heterogeneous digital media using a federated and scalable architecture, is briefly described.

Zebra Image Access System, Srilekha Mudumbai, Kshitij Shah, Amit P. Sheth, Krishnan Parasuraman, Clemens Bertram

Kno.e.sis Publications

The ZEBRA system, which is part of the VisualHarness platform for managing heterogeneous data, supports three types of access to distributed image repositories: keyword based, attribute based, and image content based. A user can assign different weights (relative importance) to each of the three types, and within the last type of access, to each of the image properties. The image based access component (IBAC) supports access based on computable image properties such as those based on spatial domain, frequency domain or statistical and structural analysis. However, it uses a novel black box approach of utilizing a Visual Information Retrieval (VIR) …

A New Regulatory Environment For The Telecommunication Industry, Jerome Lavigne Delville Jan 1998

A New Regulatory Environment For The Telecommunication Industry, Jerome Lavigne Delville

LLM Theses and Essays

The idea of information superhighways has been spurred by consumer demand, technological development and political institutions. These advancements and interests require a regulatory framework to control the operation of, and competition within the telecommunications industry. This paper focuses on government regulation of telecommunication carriers, information services (internet), video-programming and wireless telecommunication (spectrum). This paper also highlights the roles of the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) under the Telecommunications Act of 1996 as compared to previous laws prior to the 1996 Act.

Venetian Beads, Frank Hird Jan 1998

Venetian Beads, Frank Hird

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

Interesting accounts of the manufacture of Venetian glass beads turn up in the most unlikely places. The one reproduced here was published in The Girl's Own Paper for February 1, 1896 (Vol. 17, No. 840, pp. 292-294). In addition to presenting a decent description of the manufacture of drawn and blown beads during the latter part of the 19th century, Mr. Hird gives us details concerning the setting in which the beadmakers and bead stringers worked. Paint peels from the ceilings of the rooms where women make blown beads, and half-dressed men sweat in the heat from the glass furnaces. …

Dressed To Kill: Jade Beads And Pendants In The Maya Lowlands, David M. Pendergast Jan 1998

Dressed To Kill: Jade Beads And Pendants In The Maya Lowlands, David M. Pendergast

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

Jade was a material of paramount importance in ancient Maya life owing to its symbolic significance. The meanings of jade's color lent to the stone, and to those adorned with objects fashioned from it, an unmistakable aura of power. As a result, jade objects figure very prominently in the archaeological record, and their forms and contexts bespeak their ancient meanings. The tracing of the shapes, carving, production techniques, and use history of jades underscores the role of jade in Maya belief, political economy, and personal ornamentation.

Melanau Bead Culture: A Vanishing World?, Heidi Munan Jan 1998

Melanau Bead Culture: A Vanishing World?, Heidi Munan

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

Settled on the South China Sea coast of Sarawak, the Melanau comprise an aristocratic society which used to have a strong bead culture, tied to animist religion. Developments in the 19th and 20th centuries have influenced the traditional way of life so that today, only a few Melanau still keep a significant number of beads. Nevertheless, shamen and healers, adherents to the old religion, continue to use beads in healing and purification ceremonies. Bereaved families protect themselves by wearing special beads, and by providing the deceased with beads according to his or her status in the traditional hierarchy. Specific kinds …

A Brief History Of Drills And Drilling, A. John Gwinnett, Leonard Gorelick Jan 1998

A Brief History Of Drills And Drilling, A. John Gwinnett, Leonard Gorelick

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

A microscopic examination of silicone impressions of the perforations of beads, sealstones, and amulets has produced a data base of characteristics that help to define what type of drill was used to make them. This article outlines the various types of drills that have been used from the Palaeolithic period to the present day, and notes what microscopic features characterize each one. Scanning electron micrographs illustrate the minute details that are revealed by the silicone impressions.

Stone Beads And Their Imitations, Robert K. Liu Jan 1998

Stone Beads And Their Imitations, Robert K. Liu

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

Simulations of precious-stone beads began to be made as soon as feasible materials became available. From antiquity onward, we have replicas of stone beads made of glazed stone, faience, and other ceramics, and glass. In contemporary times, glass and plastic have become the predominant substitutes for stone beads, although materials of organic origin, such as bone and tusk, have also been used. Information is presented on the background, materials, and techniques for detecting such simulations, using primarily visual clues provided by macro color photographs.

A History Of Gem Beadmaking In Idar-Oberstein, Si Frazier, Ann Frazier, Glenn Lehrer Jan 1998

A History Of Gem Beadmaking In Idar-Oberstein, Si Frazier, Ann Frazier, Glenn Lehrer

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

Located at the southwestern edge of Germany, Idar-Oberstein is the historic stone-cutting center of Europe. The origins of the industry go back at least 500 years. The industry was originally based on local deposits of agate, jasper, rock crystal, and amethyst but beginning in the 19th century, all kinds of rough gemstones began to be imported from around the world. The industry grew very rapidly from the middle of the 19th century. A great deal of this success was based on the manufacture of agate beads ("African money") for export to Africa and the Middle East. This article not only …

Strictly Level-Decreasing Logic Programs, Pascal Hitzler, Anthony K. Seda Jan 1998

Strictly Level-Decreasing Logic Programs, Pascal Hitzler, Anthony K. Seda

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

We study strictly level-decreasing logic programs (sld-programs) as defined earlier by the present authors. It will be seen that sld-programs, unlike most other classes of logic programs, have both a highly intuitive declarative semantics, given as a unique supported model, and are computationally adequate in the sense that every partial recursive function can be represented by some sld-program P. Allowing for a safe use of cuts, an interpreter based on SLDNF-resolution, as implemented for example in standard Prolog systems, is shown to be sound and complete with respect to this class of programs. Furthermore, we study connections between topological …

Coal Mine Rib Mechanics - An Improved Understanding Of Rib Behaviour And Support Requirements, B Hebblewhite, B Lin, J Galvin, R Walker, Justine D. Calleja

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The role of reinforcement elements in coal mine ribs has not been well understood. Various approaches to rib support and reinforcement are in use in the industry with mixed results. Rib spall is not uncommon and can vary from small nuisance fragments of coal to large scale collapse of the full rib surface, often with serious safety implications. This paper describes the outcomes of an ACARP research project which investigated rib behaviour to identify the geotechnical mechanics involved and then evaluated some prototype reinforcement strategies based on the concept of yielding support elements.

Neural Network Classification And Prior Class Probabilities, Steve Lawrence, Ian Burns, Andrew Back, Ah Chung Tsoi, C Lee Giles Jan 1998

Neural Network Classification And Prior Class Probabilities, Steve Lawrence, Ian Burns, Andrew Back, Ah Chung Tsoi, C Lee Giles

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A commonly encountered problem in MLP (multi-layer perceptron) classification problems is related to the prior probabilities of the individual classes - if the number of training examples that correspond to each class varies significantly between the classes, then it may be harder for the network to learn the rarer classes in some cases. Such practical experience does not match theoretical results which show that MLPs approximate Bayesian a posteriori probabilities (independent of the prior class probabilities). Our investigation of the problem shows that the difference between the theoretical and practical results lies with the assumptions made in the theory (accurate …
