Ontological Meta-Analysis And Synthesis Of Hipaa, Arkalgud Ramaprasad, Thant Syn, Khin Than Win

Thant Syn

We present ontological meta-analysis and synthesis of HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) as a method for reviewing, mapping, and visualizing the research literature in the domain cumulatively, logically, systematically, and systemically. The method will highlight the domain's bright spots which are heavily emphasized, the light spots which are lightly emphasized, the blind spots which have been overlooked, and the blank spots which may never be emphasized. It will highlight the biases and asymmetries in the domain's research; the research can then be realigned to make it stronger and more effective. We present an ontology for HIPAA, map the …

Statistical Analysis Of Overvoltages Due To The Energisation Of A 132 Kv Underground Cable, M Z. Daud, P Ciufo, S Perera

Dr Philip Ciufo

Analysis by means of simulation studies is essential for providing useful information to distribution engineers and researchers regarding high frequency switching transients in cable systems. The behaviour of transients due to switching is strongly dependent on the pole closing span of the circuit breaker and also the closing angle of the power frequency voltage. This behaviour requires the study of overvoltage magnitude distributions to be carried out using a statistical approach. This paper presents an analysis of overvoltage sensitivity due to circuit breaker operations when energising an unloaded 132 kV underground cable system. Based on two approaches, the overvoltage values …

A Sensitivity Analysis Toolkit For The Simplification Of Mv Distribution Network Voltage Management, Fabian Tamp, Philip Ciufo Apr 2015

A Sensitivity Analysis Toolkit For The Simplification Of Mv Distribution Network Voltage Management, Fabian Tamp, Philip Ciufo

Dr Philip Ciufo

As distribution networks become increasingly variable and generation becomes increasingly decentralised, voltage standards are becoming more liable to violation. Accordingly, intelligent voltage management strategies are required to enable standards compliance without unduly increasing network maintenance or infrastructure costs. The relationship between network power and voltages, however, is complex, non-linear and interdependent, and thus is difficult to conceptualise and use for decision-making and control purposes. This paper introduces a software toolkit that simplifies the development of voltage management strategies by the application of sensitivity analysis. Sensitivity analysis reduces complex network relationships to simple linear equations, and thus enables easy and comprehensive …

The paper presents a comparative study performed by the Centre of Medical Radiation Physics (CMRP) on three multichannel Data Acquisition Systems (DAQ) based on different analogue front-ends to suit a wide range of radiotherapy applications. The three front-ends are: a charge-to-frequency converter developed by INFN Torino, an electrometer and a charge-to-digital converter (both commercial devices from Texas Instruments). For the first two (named DAQ A and B), the CMRP has designed the read-out systems whilst the third one (DAQ C) comes with its own evaluation board. For the purpose of the characterization DAQ A and DAQ B have been equipped …

Abdulrahman Daifullah Aljabri

Strip profile control during rolling is required to assure the dimensional quality of rolled thin strip is acceptable for customers. Throughout rolling, the strip profile is controlled by using the advanced shape control rolling mill, such as the combination of work roll crossing and shifting during asymmetrical rolling, the one of the valuable methods to control the strip profile quality in rolling process. In this paper, the influences of cold rolling parameters such as the crossing angle and axial shifting value of work rolls on the strip profile are analysed. The strip shape control is discussed under both symmetrical and …

Rail Track Infrastructure For Enhanced Speed - Analysis Design And Construction Challenges, Buddhima Indraratna, Sanjay Shrawan Nimbalkar, Jayan Sylaja J S Vinod

Buddhima Indraratna

Rail is one of the largest transportation modes offering freight and passenger traffic in rapidly developing nations, including India. Conscious efforts to improve productivity, modernization and technology upgrading have led to an impressive growth in railways. Large-scale physical modeling, sophisticated numerical modeling and full-scale field monitoring often provide significant knowledge to better understand track performance and to extend the current state-of-the-art in design. A series of large-scale laboratory tests were conducted to establish relationships between (i) ballast breakage and train speed, (ii) ballast fouling and strength and (iii) interface strength and geogrids. Comprehensive field trials were carried out on instrumented …

Rectifier Capacitor Filter Stress Analysis When Subject To Regular Voltage Fluctuations, Kun Zhao, Phil Ciufo, Sarath Perera Jan 2014

Rectifier Capacitor Filter Stress Analysis When Subject To Regular Voltage Fluctuations, Kun Zhao, Phil Ciufo, Sarath Perera

Dr Philip Ciufo

Lamp flicker levels which arise as a result of voltage fluctuations can exceed limits set by appropriate standards. New lamp types such as compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) are less sensitive to voltage fluctuations as their flicker characteristics are considerably different compared to those of the traditional incandescent lamp. These differences could support the moderation of the present voltage fluctuation and flicker standards and hence the associated limits. The potential detrimental effects on electrical equipment which may be caused by relaxation of these limits should be investigated before any changes to the present standards take place. The impact of voltage fluctuations …

The Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion Strategies And Analysis Of Current Challenges, Lasantha Meegahapola, Lanka Udawatta, Sanjeeva Witharana Dec 2013

The Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion Strategies And Analysis Of Current Challenges, Lasantha Meegahapola, Lanka Udawatta, Sanjeeva Witharana

Dr Lasantha G Meegahapola

This paper presents different roots of Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) strategies and challenges faced in terms of efficiency and economy of OTEC plants. The conversion strategies primarily focus on open cycle, closed cycle and hybrid plants. The efficiency studies mainly skew towards the effect of plant distance and thermal gradient towards plant efficiency. The economic analysis is based upon the effect of per unit cost for OTEC plant together with other important considerations such as Plant Factor (PF) and offshore distance, which determine the cost of power generation. Some illustrative examples are also provided using the derived equations under …

Comparative Analysis Of Dynamic Line Rating Models And Feasibility To Minimise Energy Losses In Wind Rich Power Networks, Mathew Simms, Lasantha Meegahapola Dec 2013

Comparative Analysis Of Dynamic Line Rating Models And Feasibility To Minimise Energy Losses In Wind Rich Power Networks, Mathew Simms, Lasantha Meegahapola

Dr Lasantha G Meegahapola

Wind power generation has indicated an exponential increase during last two decades and existing transmission network infrastructure is increasingly becoming inadequate to transmit remotely generated wind power to load centres in the network. The dynamic line rating (DLR) is one of the viable solutions to improve the transmission line ampacity during high wind penetration without investing on an additional transmission network. The main objective of this study is to identify the basic differences between two main line rating standards, since transmission network service providers (TNSPs) heavily depend on these two standards when developing their line rating models. Therefore, a parameter …

Transient Stability Analysis Of A Power System With High Wind Penetration, Lasantha Meegahapola, Damian Flynn, Tim Littler Dec 2013

Transient Stability Analysis Of A Power System With High Wind Penetration, Lasantha Meegahapola, Damian Flynn, Tim Littler

Dr Lasantha G Meegahapola

This paper presents transient stability analysis for a power system with high wind penetration. The transient stability has been evaluated based on two stability criteria: rotor angle stability and voltage stability. A modified IEEE-14 bus system has been used as the main study network and simulations have been conducted at several wind power penetration levels, defined as a fraction of total system generation. A wide range of scenarios have been presented based on the wind farm voltage at the point of connection, i.e. low voltage (LV) distribution level and high voltage (HV) transmission level, and the type of wind generator …

Flicker Propagation Analysis In Distribution Networks With Embedded Generation, D Perera, L Meegahapola, S Perera, P Ciufo Dec 2013

Flicker Propagation Analysis In Distribution Networks With Embedded Generation, D Perera, L Meegahapola, S Perera, P Ciufo

Dr Lasantha G Meegahapola

Embedded generators such as wind generators can produce observable voltage fluctuations during variable wind conditions hence flicker. The flicker produced by such intermittent and fluctuating generating sources can propagate to other parts of the distribution network while creating power quality issues in distribution feeders. This study presents a flicker emission analysis for a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind farm and investigate the pertinent factors which influence flicker propagation and attenuation in distribution feeders. Study has shown that voltage fluctuations are significantly influenced by the attenuation characteristics of various load types (i.e. constant power, impedance and current loads) connected to …

Performance Analysis Of Stfc Mb-Ofdm Uwb In Wban Channels, Miftadi Sudjai, Le Chung Tran, Farzad Safaei

Professor Farzad Safaei

This paper investigates the performance of the space-time-frequency coded (STFC) multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing ultra-wideband (MBOFDM UWB) system over wireless body area network (WBAN) channels, using the Alamouti code. Different MIMO configurations and different modulations are used for comparison. The effect of body directions is also assessed by simulation in this paper. Simulation results show that the proposed STFC MB-OFDM UWB system provides a significantly better BER performance, compared to the conventional MB-OFDM system, even from a reasonably low Eb/No range. The simulations also confirm that the body direction affects the system performance significantly due to the availability of …

Location And Tracking Of Mobile Devices: Überveillance Stalks The Streets, Katina Michael, Roger Clarke

Professor Katina Michael

During the last decade, location-tracking and monitoring applications have proliferated, in mobile cellular and wireless data networks, and through self-reporting by applications running in smartphones that are equipped with onboard global positioning system (GPS) chipsets. It is now possible to locate a smartphone-user's location not merely to a cell, but to a small area within it. Innovators have been quick to capitalise on these location-based technologies for commercial purposes, and have gained access to a great deal of sensitive personal data in the process. In addition, law enforcement utilise these technologies, can do so inexpensively and hence can track many …
