The Role Of The University In Urban Regeneration: Reframing The Analytical Approach, Manuel Fernández-Esquinas, Hugo Pinto

Manuel Fernández-Esquinas

This paper sets out a conceptual framework for the analysis of the role played by higher education establishments in urban-renewal initiatives. It is based on an integrated analysis of the uses of the university both as promoters of business innovation and in terms of their civic and social outcomes. This is combined with the dimensions habitually considered in urban regeneration strategies. The paper is organised so as to consider the possible effects of universities’ resources along four axes: physical infrastructure, human resources, governance and social intervention, and economic development. The concluding section discusses options for integrating universities’ capabilities as an …

El Papel De Las Universidades En Las Estrategias De Regeneración Urbana: Una Reconsideración Del Marco Conceptual, Manuel Fernández-Esquinas

Manuel Fernández-Esquinas

Disentangling University-Industry Relationships: Evidence From Firms In A Catch-Up Region, Manuel Fernández-Esquinas, Carmen Merchán-Hernández, Elena Espiniosa-De-Los-Monteros

Manuel Fernández-Esquinas

This article examines the complexity of the links between industry and universities in a peripheral region from the perspective of the firms. It focuses specifically on the diversity of situations in which these university-industry interactions occur. A survey of 737 firms in Andalusia is used for the analysis, reflecting a variety of innovative profiles. The analysis identifies the importance of a wide range of relationships, determines how they are structured and draws a profile of firms according to their links with universities. The results show the multiple channels by which a university system can contribute to firm innovation. They also …

Key Knowledge Providers As Sources Of Business Innovation, Manuel Fernández-Esquinas, Carmen Merchán-Hernández, Irene Ramos-Vielba, Cristina Martínez-Fernández

Manuel Fernández-Esquinas

Studies of innovation are giving increasing attention to the relationships that businesses maintain with different participants in the innovation process. It is generally assumed that interaction with other businesses, universities and government organizations can generate knowledge that will improve the ability to innovate. However, there is little evidence of the specific roles that businesses assign to partners with regard to the provision of knowledge for innovation activities. This paper presents results from research on the dynamics of Triple Helix networks, where such networks provide the basis for building innovation capacity for businesses in catch-up geographical regions. The principal assumption is …

Measuring University–Industry Collaboration In A Regional Innovation System, Irene Ramos-Vielba, Manuel Fernández-Esquinas, Elena Espinosa-De-Los-Monteros

Manuel Fernández-Esquinas

Studies of university–industry collaboration remain subject to important limitations due to the shortage of empirical data and a lack of consistency in that obtained to date. This article puts into practice a set of universities Third Mission indicators in a regional innovation system. Selected indicators previously compiled from literature were reorganized and pre-tested. We have undertaken two face-to-face surveys of 737 firms and 765 heads of research teams, respectively. The results test the validation of indicators and provide a complex map of university–industry linkages as well as some observations on the flexibility needed to address this issue.

Knowledge Intensive Service Activities That Matter For Industry Innovation: Evidences From A Peripheral Region, Manuel Fernández-Esquinas, Cristina Martínez-Fernández, Irene Ramos-Vielba, Carmen Merchán-Hernández

Manuel Fernández-Esquinas

The innovation systems literature has long considered the role of different actors and institutions in the promotion and diffusion of innovation, both in industry systems and in regional systems. An area of increasing attention but where less evidence is found is how open innovation occurs in enterprises located in peripheral regions; specifically which knowledge intensive service activities (KISA) are core for their innovation efforts and how are they co-produced through internal and external sources. This paper discusses innovation related knowledge intensive service activities in enterprises of a region of Southern Spain (Andalucia) and how these activities constitute a system of …

¿Quién Responde A Las Encuestas De Innovación? Problemas Metodológicos Y Calidad De Los En El Estudio De La Innovación Empresarial, Manuel Fernández-Esquinas, Carmen Merchán-Hernández

Manuel Fernández-Esquinas
