Geogrid-Confined Pervious Geopolymer Concrete Piles With Frp-Pvcconfined Concrete Core: Concept And Behaviour, Haiqiu Zhang, Muhammad N. S Hadi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

The use of fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) as strengthening materials for piles was found to be a promising scheme, due to their high strength-to-weight ratio, high durability and high anti-corrosion ability. This study presents an experimental investigation of a new form of composite piles: geogrid-confined pervious geopolymer concrete piles (GPGCPs) with fibre reinforced polymer (FRP)-polyvinyl chloride (PVC)-confined concrete core (FPCC). The GPGCP with FPCC consists of a circular geogrid outer tube, a FRP-PVC-confined normal geopolymer concrete core, and pervious geopolymer concrete (PGC) filled in between. The reason for applying PGC into piles is to increase the …

Effect Of Water-Based Nanolubricant Containing Nano-Tio2 On Friction And Wear Behaviour Of Chrome Steel At Ambient And Elevated Temperatures, Hui Wu, Fanghui Jia, Jingwei Zhao, Shuiquan Huang, Lianzhou Wang, Sihai Jiao, Han Huang, Zhengyi Jiang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

A novel experimental method was developed through a ball-on-disk tribometer to study the friction and wear behaviour of a chrome steel at temperatures of 25, 200 and 500 °C. Water-based nanolubricants containing different concentrations of nano-TiO2 from 0.4 to 8.0 wt% were used to investigate their effects on friction-reduction and anti-wear mechanisms, in comparison to the benchmarks under dry and water conditions. The results show that the water-based nanolubricants can significantly reduce coefficient of friction (COF) and improve wear resistance of the chrome steel at both ambient and elevated temperatures. In particular, the use of nanolubricant containing an optimal concentration …

Compressive Behaviour Of Partially Frp Confined Concrete: Experimental Observations And Assessment Of The Stress-Strain Models, Weiqiang Wang, M Neaz Sheikh, Ali Qasim Al-Baali, Muhammad N. S Hadi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

This study provides new insight on the compressive behaviour of partially fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) confined concrete with either strain-hardening or strain-softening responses. Fully FRP confined concrete, partially FRP confined concrete with different strip gaps, and unconfined concrete were tested under axial compression. Four types of axial load-axial deformation behaviours were observed for specimens with different strip gaps. Even though a high volumetric ratio of FRP was applied, the confinement effectiveness was negligible when the strip gap exceeded the diameter of the specimens. Moreover, the axial stress-axial strain behaviours of wrapped and non-wrapped concrete were observed to be different, and …

Use Of Synthetic Inclusions For Enhanced Behaviour Of Railway Ballast Under Impact Loading, Fernanda Bessa Ferreira, Buddhima Indraratna

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Ballasted rail tracks form one of the largest worldwide networks catering to passenger and freight transportation. However, track deterioration associated with severe dynamic wheel loads is inevitable over the years leading to high maintenance costs. Geosynthetics and energy-absorbing rubber mats have increasingly been applied in rail track foundations to improve track stability and reduce the life-cycle cost of the railway system. This paper presents the results of an experimental study carried out using a high-capacity drop-weight impact testing apparatus to investigate the deformation and degradation response of railway ballast under impact loading conditions. The effectiveness of the geogrid reinforcement in …

Breakaway Oxidation Behaviour Of Ferritic Stainless Steels At 1150 °C In Humid Air, Xiawei Cheng, Zhengyi Jiang, Brian J. Monaghan, Dongbin Wei, Raymond Longbottom, Jingwei Zhao, Jianguo Peng, Ming Luo, Li Ma, Suzhen Luo, Laizhu Jiang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The breakaway oxidation behaviour of ferritic stainless steels 430, 443 and 445 has been investigatedat 1150◦C in humid air. The oxidation kinetics exhibited significant differences among the three ferriticstainless steels. A uniform and steady growing oxide scale was developed on the 430 steel with an evensteel/oxide interface. Local breakdown of the initially protective oxide scale occurred and oxide noduleswere developed on the 443 and 445 stainless steels, resulting in irregular and rough steel/oxide inter-faces. The breakaway oxidation behaviour was significantly influenced by the microstructure and thecomposition of the oxide scale. The Mn-Cr spinel oxide formed on top of the Cr2O3scale …

Experimental Investigation Of The Behaviour Of Concrete Beams Reinforced With Gfrp Bars Under Static And Impact Loading, Matthew Goldston, Alex M. Remennikov, M Neaz Sheikh

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Composite materials, including Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) bars, have been gaining momentum as alternatives to traditional steel reinforcements in civil and structural engineering sectors. FRP materials are non-corrosive, non-conductive, and lightweight and possess high longitudinal tensile strength, which are advantageous for their use in civil infrastructure. This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation into the effects of the use of glass FRP (GFRP) bars as internal reinforcement on the behaviour of concrete beams. Both static and dynamic (impact) behaviours of the beam have been investigated. Twelve GFRP reinforced concrete (RC) beams were designed, cast and tested. Six GFRP …

The Swelling Behaviour Of Lignosulfonate-Treated Expansive Soil, Dennis Pere Alazigha, Buddhima Indraratna, J S. Vinod, Lambert Emeka Ezeajugh

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper presents results regarding the potential of lignosulfonate (LS) to control the swelling of expansive soil. One-dimensional swell tests were performed on untreated and LS-treated remoulded samples of Australian expansive soil from the state of Queensland. The test results indicated that LS has significant influence on the swelling behaviour of this expansive soil. The results were compared with those of identical cement-treated soil samples, and it was found that LS could be a economical and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional alkaline additives. In addition, the behaviour of LS-treated specimens during repeated freezing and thawing cycles was measured. The results …

Biaxial Creep Test Study On The Influence Of Structural Anisotropy On Rheological Behaviour Of Hard Rock, Chuangzhou Wu, Qingsheng Chen, Sudip Basack, Riqing Xu, Zhenming Shi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Rheological characteristics are one of most important properties needed to be considered for the designing and construction for the long term stability and serviceability of underground structures in the rock mass. Up to date, although extensive studies on the rheological properties of rocks are available in the literature, most of existing studies reported the strain-time data for the axial deformation through compression rheological method and did not mention the lateral deformation, and mainly focused on the soft rocks at shallow depth. Thus, very limited attention has been paid to the rheological properties of deep and hard rock, neglecting the effects …

Transient Cfd Modelling Of Low-Temperature Spontaneous Heating Behaviour In Multiple Coal Stockpiles With Wind Forced Convection, Jian Zhang, Yuntao Liang, Ting X. Ren, Zhongwei Wang, Gongda Wang Jan 2016

Transient Cfd Modelling Of Low-Temperature Spontaneous Heating Behaviour In Multiple Coal Stockpiles With Wind Forced Convection, Jian Zhang, Yuntao Liang, Ting X. Ren, Zhongwei Wang, Gongda Wang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Spontaneous heating of coal stockpile has long been a thermal dynamic hazard during coal storage, processing, and transport. A transient non-equilibrium thermal CFD model has been developed to study the low-temperature self-heating behaviour of coal in multiple stockpiles under different prevailing wind conditions. Modelling results from the initial steady wind flow simulation indicate that a wake region can be induced on the leeward side of each coal stockpile. Pressure coefficient drops when the wind stream encounters or leaves a stockpile and the pressure coefficient profiles of multiple stockpiles tend to have more resemblance with a wider spacing. The first stockpile …

Stress-Dilatancy Behaviour Of Compacted Coalwash As A Landfill Option, Ana Heitor, Chazath Kaliboullah, Buddhima Indraratna, Cholachat Rujikiatkamjorn

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Coalwash (CW) is granular waste by-product that results from the operation of the local coal mining industry. The reuse and recycling of this material in earthwork construction project as landfill option, is attractive from both economic and environmental perspectives. This paper presents an experimental study on compacted CW material prepared at different relative compaction levels. First the basic materials index properties are described and the stress-dilatancy behaviour is examined through a series of drained triaxial compression tests. The experimental data suggests that the different relative compaction levels exhibit different stress strain behaviour but show some degree of similarity in terms …

Assessment Of Interface Shear Behaviour Of Sub-Ballast With Geosynthetics By Large-Scale Direct Shear Test, Mohammad Mahdi Biabani, Buddhima Indraratna, Sanjay Nimbalkar Jan 2016

Assessment Of Interface Shear Behaviour Of Sub-Ballast With Geosynthetics By Large-Scale Direct Shear Test, Mohammad Mahdi Biabani, Buddhima Indraratna, Sanjay Nimbalkar

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A series of large-scale direct shear test were conducted to study the interface shear strength of subballast reinforced with different types of geomembranes and geogrids. The impact of normal stress (σn), shearing rate (SR), relative density (DR) and open area (OA%) on the behaviour of granular material was investigated in unreinforced and reinforced condition. The results revealed that the performance of material was markedly influenced by σn and OA. The results also showed that geogrids provided a greater value of passive resistance owing to have transverse ribs, but the mobilised passive resistance became smaller with increase in OA. The triaxial …

Brittle Versus Ductile Behaviour Of Nanotwinned Copper: A Molecular Dynamics Study, Linqing Pei, Cheng Lu, Xing Zhao, Liang Zhang, Kuiyu Cheng, Guillaume Michal, A Kiet Tieu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Nanotwinned copper (Cu) exhibits an unusual combination of ultra-high yield strength and high ductility. A brittle-to-ductile transition was previously experimentally observed in nanotwinned Cu despite Cu being an intrinsically ductile metal. However, the atomic mechanisms responsible for brittle fracture and ductile fracture in nanotwinned Cu are still not clear. In this study, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations at different temperatures have been performed to investigate the fracture behaviour of a nanotwinned Cu specimen with a single-edge-notched crack whose surface coincides with a twin boundary. Three temperature ranges are identified, indicative of distinct fracture regimes, under tensile straining perpendicular to the twin …

Grain Size Effect Of Thickness/Average Grain Size On Mechanical Behaviour, Fracture Mechanism And Constitutive Model For Phosphor Bronze Foil, Zhi Fang, Zhengyi Jiang, Xiaogang Wang, Cunlong Zhou, Dongbin Wei, Xianghua Liu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Size effects play a significant role in microforming process, and any dimensional change can have a great impact on materials' mechanical properties. In this paper, the size effects on deformation behaviour and fracture of phosphor foil were investigated in the form of grain size effect: the ratio of materials' thickness (T) to average grain size (D) by micro tensile tests. The ratio was designed to be closed to but larger than, less than and equal to 1, respectively. The results show that the amount of plastic deformation decreases with the decrease of the ratio of T/D, which indicates that the …

Coupled Discrete Element-Finite Difference Method For Analysing The Load-Deformation Behaviour Of A Single Stone Column In Soft Soil, Buddhima Indraratna, Ngoc Trung Ngo, Cholachat Rujikiatkamjorn, Scott W. Sloan

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Experimental studies and numerical modelling of the deformation of soft clay stabilised by stone columns have been conducted over the past few decades. Continuum-based numerical models have provided valuable insight into the prediction of settlement, lateral deformation, and stress and strain-rate dependent behaviour of stone columns at a macroscopic scale, but because they consist of granular material such as crushed rock, gravel, and waste rock aggregates, their behaviour is influenced by inter-particle micromechanics and cannot be modelled properly using these models. In this paper a novel coupled model of the discrete element method (DEM) and finite difference method (FDM) is …

A Study Of The Behaviour Of Fresh And Coal Fouled Ballast Reinforced By Geogrid Using The Discrete Element Method, Ngoc Trung Ngo, Buddhima Indraratna, Cholachat Rujikiatkamjorn

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Geogrids are widely used in ballasted rail tracks for reinforcement and stabilisation. During train operation, ballast becomes contaminated or fouled due to infiltration of fines from the surface, mud pumping from the subgrade, and degradation, which decreases the performance of the geogrids. This paper presents the results of a laboratory and numerical simulation to study the effect that coal fines have on the interface between ballast and geogrid. The stress-strain behaviour of fresh and fouled ballast reinforced by geogrid was investigated via a series of large scale direct shear tests in the laboratory and numerical simulations using the Discrete Element …

On Asymptotic Behaviour And W 2, P Regularity Of Potentials In Optimal Transportation, Jiakun Liu, Neil Trudinger, Xu-Jia Wang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

© 2014, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg. In this paper we study local properties of cost and potential functions in optimal transportation. We prove that in a proper normalization process, the cost function is uniformly smooth and converges locally smoothly to a quadratic cost x · y, while the potential function converges to a quadratic function. As applications we obtain the interior W2, p estimates and sharp C1, α estimates for the potentials, which satisfy a Monge–Ampère type equation. The W2, p estimate was previously proved by Caffarelli for the quadratic transport cost and the associated standard Monge–Ampère equation.

In this study, a total of 8 columns with 150 mm diameter and 300 mm height were cast and tested under axial compression. The columns were divided into four groups and each group contains two identical columns. The first group had two columns of plain concrete, and the remaining three groups were reinforced with solid, axially perforated …

Constitutive Analysis For Hot Deformation Behaviour Of Novel Bimetal Consisting Of Pearlitic Steel And Low Carbon Steel, Xingjian Gao, Zhengyi Jiang, Dongbin Wei, Huijun Li, Sihai Jiao, Jianzhong Xu, Xiaoming Zhang, Jingtao Han, Dengfu Chen Jan 2014

Constitutive Analysis For Hot Deformation Behaviour Of Novel Bimetal Consisting Of Pearlitic Steel And Low Carbon Steel, Xingjian Gao, Zhengyi Jiang, Dongbin Wei, Huijun Li, Sihai Jiao, Jianzhong Xu, Xiaoming Zhang, Jingtao Han, Dengfu Chen

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

To understand the high temperature flow behaviour of a novel pearlitic steel (PS) and low carbon steel (LCS) bimetal, hot compression tests in a wide range of temperature and strain rate were conducted on a Gleeble 3500 thermo mechanical simulator, and the constitutive model was developed based on the experimental data. The measured true stress-strain curves exhibited three types of variation patterns, which are (i) a plateau type, (ii) single peak type and (iii) multi peaks type. These patterns well displayed the effects of the deformation temperature, strain rate and plastic strain on the flow behaviour of the bimetal. By …

Effects Of Tungsten On The Hydrogen Embrittlement Behaviour Of Microalloyed Steels, Jingwei Zhao, Zhengyi Jiang, Chong Soo Lee Jan 2014

Effects Of Tungsten On The Hydrogen Embrittlement Behaviour Of Microalloyed Steels, Jingwei Zhao, Zhengyi Jiang, Chong Soo Lee

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The effects of tungsten (W) additions (0, 0.1, 0.5 and 1 wt.%) on the hydrogen embrittlement behaviour of microalloyed steels were systematically investigated by means of slow strain rate tests on circumferentially notched cylindrical specimens, and the mechanism of hydrogen-induced embrittlement was discussed. W addition is found to increase the activation energy of hydrogen desorption. Microstructural features affect the hydrogen embrittlement behaviour and fracture modes of microalloyed steels. It is suggested that the hydrogen-induced embrittlement in the studied microalloyed steels with different W additions is caused by the combined effects of decohesion and internal pressure in the presence of hydrogen.

Dem Simulation Of The Behaviour Of Geogrid Stabilised Ballast Fouled With Coal, Ngoc Trung Ngo, Buddhima Indraratna, Cholachat Rujikiatkamjorn

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Geogrids are commonly used in railway construction for reinforcement and stabilisation. When railway ballast becomes fouled due to ballast breakage, infiltration of coal fines, dust and subgrade soil pumping, the reinforcement effect of geogrids decreases significantly. This paper presents results obtained from Discrete Element Method (DEM) to study the interface behaviour of coal-fouled ballast reinforced by geogrid subjected to direct shear testing. In this study, irregularly-shaped aggregates (ballast) were modelled by clumping together 10-20 spheres in appropriate sizes and positions. The geogrid was modelled by bonding a large number of small spheres together to form the desired grid geometry and …

Behavior Of Fresh And Fouled Railway Ballast Subjected To Direct Shear Testing: Discrete Element Simulation, B Indraratna, N T Ngo, C Rujikiatkamjorn, J S. Vinod

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper presents the three-dimensional discrete element method (DEM) that was used to study the shear behaviour of fresh and coal fouled ballast in direct shear testing. The volumetric changes and stress-strain behaviour of fresh and fouled ballast were simulated and compared with the experimental results. 'Clump logic' in Particle Flow Code (PFC3D) incorporated in a MATLAB Code was used to simulate irregular shaped particles in which groups of ten to twenty spherical balls were clumped together in appropriate sizes to simulate ballast particles. Fouled ballast with various Void Contaminant Index (VCI), ranging from 20%VCI to 70%VCI, were modelled by …

An Experimental Investigation On The Deformation And Degradation Behaviour Of Geogrid-Reinforced Ballast, Sd. K Karimullah Hussaini, B Indraratna, J S. Vinod

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Railroad ballast, owing to its unbounded granular nature, spreads laterally when subjected to large vertical axle loads, which influences the track stability. In this view, large-scale cyclic tests have been conducted on ballast to explore the role of geogrid in controlling the lateral deformation of ballast and hence improving the track performance. Fresh latite ballast having a mean particle size of 35 mm and geogrids with different aperture sizes was used for the investigations. Tests were conducted using a modified process simulation test (MPST) apparatus at a loading frequency of 20 Hz, with geogrid placed at the subballast-ballast interface and …

Behaviour Of Clay-Fouled Ballast Under Cyclic Loading, Nayoma Tennakoon, Buddhima Indraratna

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Expansion of the rail network in congested coastal Australia compels track construction on soft clayey subgrade, including fine-grained estuarine soils. In such low-lying areas, where the water table is close to the ground surface, the saturated soft subgrade is often subjected to pumping (mud slurry) under the application of cyclic wheel loads, thereby causing fouling of the overlying ballast. This technical note presents the results of a series of large-scale, drained, cyclic, triaxial tests conducted on clay-fouled ballast. The impact of fouling on the stress-strain behaviour, resilient modulus and degradation of ballast is discussed.

Influence Of Pallets On The Behaviour And Design Of Steel Drive-In Racks, Benoit Gilbert, Lip H. Teh, Romain X. Badet, Kim Rasmussen

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper analyses the influence of horizontal bracing restraints provided by the friction between pallet bases and rail beams on the static behaviour and design of steel drive-in storage racks. The pallet bracing restraints are shown to significantly influence the structural behaviour of the rack, and their effect on the bending moment distribution of the uprights is studied in the paper. The 2D single upright model proposed by Godley is improved in this study by including the restraints provided by the plan flexural stiffness of the rail beams and the friction between the pallets and rail beams. The improved 2D …

Aspects Related To The Small Strain Shear Modulus Behaviour Of Compacted Soils Subjected To Wetting And Drying, Ana Heitor, Buddhima Indraratna, Cholachat Rujikiatkamjorn

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The dynamic properties of a soil are routinely investigated to describe its engineering behavior under repeated loading. Although the effect of suction on the dynamic response of soils is significant, there have been limited studies in which the post-compacted changes in suction induced by wetting and drying cycles have been considered. In this paper, aspects related to the dynamic properties with special reference to the small strain shear modulus of compacted soils subjected to wetting and drying are described. Further evidence on the dynamic response in terms of small strain shear modulus (G0) of a compacted soil subjected to wetting-drying …
