Full-View Three-Dimensional Measurement Of Complex Surfaces, Limei Song, Yuan Ru, Yangang Yang, Qinghua Guo, Xinjun Zhu, Jiangtao Xi Jan 2018

Full-View Three-Dimensional Measurement Of Complex Surfaces, Limei Song, Yuan Ru, Yangang Yang, Qinghua Guo, Xinjun Zhu, Jiangtao Xi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

A full-view three-dimensional (3-D) measurement method for complex surfaces is proposed, where 3-D data for standard balls with different angles are used to calibrate the rotation axes of a turntable and obtain transformation matrices of 3-D data of adjacent views. It can achieve accurate registration of 3-D data of views with different angles and obtains full-view 3-D data for complex surfaces in conjunction with the method for principal point calibration of cameras and modified triple-frequency six-step phase-shifting phase demodulation methods. Experiments show that the developed system based on the proposed method can achieve automatic registration of 3-D data of views ...

Developing Coal Burst Propensity Index Method For Australian Coal Mines, Xiaohan Yang, Ting X. Ren, Lihai Tan, Alex M. Remennikov, Xueqiu He Jan 2018

Developing Coal Burst Propensity Index Method For Australian Coal Mines, Xiaohan Yang, Ting X. Ren, Lihai Tan, Alex M. Remennikov, Xueqiu He

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Coal burst is the violent failure of overstressed coal, and it is often accompanied by sound, coal ejection and seismic events. It is subsequently recognized as a serious safety risk of Australia after double fatalities coal burst happened at Austar Coal Mine. Considering the increasing trend of coal burst severity and frequency with mining depth, it is an urgent task to develop the coal burst risk assessment methods for Australia underground coal mines. Coal burst propensity index method is a widely used method of burst risk evaluation of coal as it is summed up from the coal burst research and ...

Organizing Online Computation For Adaptive Micro Open Education Resource Recommendation, Geng Sun, Tingru Cui, Ghassan Beydoun, Shiping Chen, Dongming Xu, Jun Shen Jan 2017

Organizing Online Computation For Adaptive Micro Open Education Resource Recommendation, Geng Sun, Tingru Cui, Ghassan Beydoun, Shiping Chen, Dongming Xu, Jun Shen

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Our previous work, Micro Learning as a Service (MLaaS), aimed to deliver adaptive micro open education resources (OERs). However, relying solely on the offline computation, the recommendation lacks rationality and timeliness. It is also difficult to make the first recommendation to a new learner. In this paper we introduce the organization of the online computation of the MLaaS. It targets at solving the cold start problem due to the shortage of learner information and real-time updates of the learner-micro OER profile

Are Disaster Early Warnings Effective?, Kerri Worthington, Katina Michael, Peter Johnson, Paul Barnes

Professor Katina Michael

Australia's summer is traditionally a time of heightened preparation for natural disasters, with cyclones and floods menacing the north and bushfires a constant threat in the south. And the prospect of more frequent, and more intense, disasters thanks to climate change has brought the need for an effective early warning system to the forefront of policy-making. Technological advances and improved telecommunication systems have raised expectations that warning of disasters will come early enough to keep people safe. But are those expectations too high? Kerri Worthington reports. Increasingly, the world's governments -- and their citizens -- rely on technology-based early warning ...

Concern People Without Latest Technology Will Miss Fire Warnings, Sally Sara, Ashley Hall, Peter Johnson, Katina Michael Jan 2013

Concern People Without Latest Technology Will Miss Fire Warnings, Sally Sara, Ashley Hall, Peter Johnson, Katina Michael

Professor Katina Michael

But what if the website goes down in the way Victoria's Country Fire Authority website crashed as fires raged a few weeks ago? What about those people who don't own the latest technology? And what happens when the power goes out?

KATINA MICHAEL: Well there's no television, there isn't ability to access the internet potentially.

ASHLEY HALL: Professor Katina Michael is Associate Professor at the School of Information Systems and Technology at the University of Wollongong.

KATINA MICHAEL: I would suggest a long lasting powered radio because we don't want is we don't want ...
