Connected Learning Schools Project: Acer Evaluation Report, Tim Friedman, Hamish Coates

Dr Tim Friedman

Between 2006 and 2009, the New South Wales Partners in Learning Project was called Connected Learning Schools. This program began in June 2006 with 10 school teams and 120 teachers, in partnership with Department of Education and Training (DET) New South Wales and the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). Connected Learning Schools investigated how children in years 5-9 can shape their education by changing the emphasis from what they learn to how they learn.

Semantic Knowledge For Famous Names In Mild Cognitive Impairment, M Seidenberg, L Guidotti, Kristy Nielson, J Woodard, S Durgerian, Q Zhang, A Gander, M Franczak, P Antuono, S Rao

Kristy Nielson

Person identification represents a unique category of semantic knowledge that is commonly impaired in Alzheimer’s disease (AD), but has received relatively little investigation in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The current study examined the retrieval of semantic knowledge for famous names from three time epochs (recent, remote, and enduring) in two participant groups: 23 amnestic MCI (aMCI) patients and 23 healthy elderly controls. The aMCI group was less accurate and produced less semantic knowledge than controls for famous names. Names from the enduring period were recognized faster than both recent and remote names in both groups, and remote names …

Auditory Verb Perception Recruits Motor Systems In The Developing Brain: An Fmri Investigation, Josita Maouene, Karin Harman James Dec 2008

Auditory Verb Perception Recruits Motor Systems In The Developing Brain: An Fmri Investigation, Josita Maouene, Karin Harman James

Josita C Maouene

This study investigated neural activation patterns during verb processing in children, using fMRI (functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging). Preschool children (aged 4-6) passively listened to lists of verbs and adjectives while neural activation was measured. Findings indicated that verbs were processed differently than adjectives, as the verbs recruited motor systems in the frontal cortex during auditory perception, but the adjectives did not. Further evidence suggested that different types of verbs activated different regions in the motor cortex. The results demonstrate that the motor system is recruited during verb perception in the developing brain, reflecting the embodied nature of language learning and …

Mixture Of Random Effects For Individual Learning Curves, Sally Wood, Edward Cripps, Robert Wood Dec 2008

Mixture Of Random Effects For Individual Learning Curves, Sally Wood, Edward Cripps, Robert Wood

Sally Wood

In the pyschology literature individuals are often classified as entity theorists or incrementalists. In this paper we explore the different learning behaviours over time of these two groups. To assess learning an individual is assigned a task and their performance on the task is measured over a number of trials. Learning behaviour is modelled as a mixture of two random effects, where the random effects components of the mixture correspond to increased learning and spiralling behaviour. We find significant differences in the learning behaviours of the two groups. Specifically those individuals who are categorized as entity theorists are more likely …

Enhancing Authentic Assessment Through Information Technology, Beth Rubin Dec 2008

Enhancing Authentic Assessment Through Information Technology, Beth Rubin

Beth Rubin

This chapter provides a framework to analyze the opportunities to enhance authenticity when assessment is mediated by information technology (IT), as well as the limitations of IT mediation on authenticity. The potential degree of authenticity is determined by several aspects of the competence being assessed: the chronicity of access to and use of information; the durability of the display; the use of written, oral and non-verbal communication; and computer use. The framework is used to identify IT tools that enable more authentic assessment as well as sample approaches and limitations on authenticity.

The Milieu Of Managerial Work: An Integrative Framework Linking Work Context To Role Requirements., Erich Dierdorff, Robert Rubin, Frederick Morgeson Dec 2008

The Milieu Of Managerial Work: An Integrative Framework Linking Work Context To Role Requirements., Erich Dierdorff, Robert Rubin, Frederick Morgeson

Erich C. Dierdorff

Theoretical and empirical efforts focusing on the interplay between work context and managerial role requirements have been conspicuously absent in the scholarly literature. This paucity exists despite over 60 years of research concerning the requirements of managerial work and with the rather universal recognition that work context meaningfully shapes organizational behavior. The authors developed a theoretical model linking different types of role requirements to different forms of work context. They empirically tested this framework with a nationally representative sample of 8,633 incumbents spanning 52 managerial occupations. Findings from hierarchical linear modeling analyses demonstrated that discrete forms of context (task, social, …

Do Leaders Reap What They Sow? Leader And Employee Outcomes Of Leader Cynicism About Organizational Change., Robert Rubin, Erich Dierdorff, William Bommer, Timothy Baldwin Dec 2008

Do Leaders Reap What They Sow? Leader And Employee Outcomes Of Leader Cynicism About Organizational Change., Robert Rubin, Erich Dierdorff, William Bommer, Timothy Baldwin

Erich C. Dierdorff

Despite increased attention given to the attitude of organizational cynicism, few studies have examined the impact of leader cynicism in organizations. The present study sought to investigate relationships between leader cynicism about organizational change (CAOC) and outcomes relevant to both the leader (performance and organizational citizenship behavior ratings) and his/her employees (employee organizational commitment and CAOC). Using data from 106 manufacturing managers, leader CAOC was found to negatively influence both leader and employee outcomes. Of particular importance, transformational leader behavior was found to fully mediate these relationships and thus served as an important explanatory mechanism. A discussion concerning the potential …

Categorical Structure Among Shared Features In Networks Of Early-Learned Nouns, Thomas Hills, Mounir Maouene, Josita Maouene, Adam Sheya, Linda Smith Dec 2008

Categorical Structure Among Shared Features In Networks Of Early-Learned Nouns, Thomas Hills, Mounir Maouene, Josita Maouene, Adam Sheya, Linda Smith

Josita C Maouene

The shared features that characterize the noun categories that young children learn first are a formative basis of the human category system. To investigate the potential categorical information contained in the features of early-learned nouns, we examine the graph-theoretic properties of noun–feature networks. The networks are built from the overlap of words normatively acquired by children prior to 2½ years of age and perceptual and conceptual (functional) features acquired from adult feature generation norms. The resulting networks have small-world structure, indicative of a high degree of feature overlap in local clusters. However, perceptual features – due to their abundance and …

Grasping And Lifting Different Materials, Gavin Buckingham, Jonathan Cant, Melvyn Goodale Dec 2008

Grasping And Lifting Different Materials, Gavin Buckingham, Jonathan Cant, Melvyn Goodale

Gavin Buckingham

The material from which an object is made can determine how heavy it feels (Seashore, 1899). Interestingly, a metal block that has been adjusted to have the same size and mass as a polystyrene block will feel lighter than the polystyrene block. We recently showed that participants experiencing this material-weight illusion’ (MWI) do not apply forces that match their perceptual experience of heaviness ‐ just like in the size‐weight illusion ( Flanagan & Beltzner, 2000).

Our previous study showed that forces on early trials were scaled to each participant’s expectations of how much a particular block should weigh ‐ excessive …

Correspondence: Help-Negation, Coralie Wilson Dec 2008

Correspondence: Help-Negation, Coralie Wilson

Coralie J Wilson

It is positive that preliminary findings from the 2007 National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing suggest that more Australians than in 1997 are seeking help for common mental disorders. However, the 2007 Survey also suggests that two in three Australians who had common forms of mental disorder and 41% of those with serious thoughts of suicide during the last year did not seek or engage in professional help for their condition [1]. Even more concerning are the preliminary results suggesting that 86% of those who didn’t seek help for their common mental disorders thought they didn’t need any type …

Bosses’ Perceptions Of Family-Work Conflict And Women’S Promotability: Glass Ceiling Effects, Grace Lemmon Dec 2008

Bosses’ Perceptions Of Family-Work Conflict And Women’S Promotability: Glass Ceiling Effects, Grace Lemmon

Grace Lemmon

We examine one potential reason for the persistence of the glass ceiling: bosses' perceptions of female subordinates' family-work conflict. Person categorization and social role theories are used to examine whether bosses (both male and female) perceive women as having greater family-work conflict and therefore view them as mismatched to their organizations and jobs. The results support our model: bosses' perceptions of family-work conflict mediated the relationships between subordinate sex and perceptions of person-organization fit, person-job fit, and performance. Both types of fit were related to promotability (nomination for promotion and manager-assessed promotability). We discuss implications for practice and future research. …

Early Semantic Networks: Preferential Attachment Or Preferential Acquisition?, Josita Maouene Dec 2008

Early Semantic Networks: Preferential Attachment Or Preferential Acquisition?, Josita Maouene

Josita C Maouene

Analyses of adult semantic networks suggest a learning mechanism involving preferential attachment: A word is more likely to enter the lexicon the more connected the known words to which it is related. We introduce and test two alternative growth principles: preferential ac- quisition—words enter the lexicon not because they are related to well-connected words, but because they connect well to other words in the learning environment—and the lure of the associates—new words are favored in propor- tion to their connections with known words. We tested these alternative principles using longitudinal analyses of de- veloping networks of 130 nouns children learn …
