One branch of aggression research has concentrated on the elicitation of aggressive behavior by means of exteroceptive stimulation. Electric shock or similar painful stimuli (Ulrich & Azrin, 1962) are well known to produce fighting in the laboratory rat. This basic method has allowed experimental analysis of a wide scope of associated variables.

Ulrich and Azrin (1962) investigated several different parameters. They found that laboratory rats increased their fighting behavior as the frequency of shocks increased from 0.1 to 38 shocks per minute. With frequency fixed, the fighting response rate resembled an inverted U-shaped curve when shock intensity was increased from …

Introduction

The study of the determinants of alcoholism, one of the most perplexing diseases of mankind, entered its most fruitful era of discovery in the laboratory of the animal researcher. A pioneering study of the determinants of alcohol consumption by Richter (1940) indicated that laboratory rats show a preference for alcohol over water beginning at 1.8 per cent ethanol (v/v) solution, and continue to prefer alcohol over water up to a 6 per cent ethanol (v/v) solution. Richter made two important contributions to alcohol research which had broader implications than the presentation of an index of alcohol consumption in rats. …

For example, college board scores, high school rank, and high school grades are widely used a predictors of academic success. Since the publishing of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children in 1949, the majority of the validation don procedures have been correlations of the WISC with other intelligence teats or with achievement tests. As Littell (1960) indicated in his review of the research, both methods have yielded high correlations and are responsible in part for the wide acceptance of the WISC. To a certain extent the everyday incidents of life occur in a chaotic and orderless fashion. But in such an unpredictable world people must predict such events even if they present themselves at random. This suggestion by Restle (1961) is especially relevant to an experiment by Pattie (1964a) in the area of human binary prediction. This study seemed to indicate that individuals search for and believe in orderly, predictable solutions in apparently orderless, random situations. This study investigated the variables measured by the verification scale of the Kuder Preference Record-Voca tiona l and the falsification scale of the GuilfordZimmerman Temperament Survey. Responses of an experimental group of Protestant seminary students were compared with those of a control group of general psychology students. These groups were shown to be different in self-perceived values and attitudes, as defined by results on the Allport Vernon Lindzey Study of Values and the Guilford-Zimmerman Temperament Survey, with the experimental group presenting the more altruistic outlook. The purpose of this research was to compare the Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities and the Parsons Language Sample in assessing the linguistic functioning of institutionalized mentally retarded children. A stratified sample of mentally retarded children was administered both the ITPA and PLS in counterbalanced order. The results were correlated through the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient and the correlation matrix analyzed through a principle-components factor analysis. The ITPA, PLS comparison produced high correlation coefficients with the exception of the Intraverbal Gesture sub-test of the PLS. The factor analysis of the correlation matrix revealed one or more sub-tests had high loadings …

Bugelski and Sharlock in commenting on McGeoch's statements had this to say, "The concept of mediation is of great potential value for the psychological analysis of learning, thinking, and insight."
