Racial minority groups experience disparities in mental health and are prone to having more detrimental outcomes than their white counterparts. Current events have heightened the exposure of racial injustices experienced by communities of Black, Indigenous and people of Color (BIPOC). Given this context, the elimination of mental health disparities in people of Color requires critical attention and diligent work more so now than ever before. Culture, climate, and intrinsic bias leave some institute of higher education more challenged in promoting and supporting education for students of Color. This presentation seeks to provoke deep and meaningful discussion related to issues of respectability within the African American community. More specifically, this presentation seeks to prompt audience members to critically evaluate the social practices of African American people that are deeply-seated in elitism and promote a culture of exclusion. By gaining a deeper knowledge of how racialized policing behaviors negatively affect our community, we aim to provide audience members with strategies for enduring and overcoming this issue.

In my paper, I discuss the means of the deterrence theory, and argue against its original intent and how in my views it is a failed and flawed theory. I discuss the notion of inherent “evil” in people, and how that the deterrence theory cannot simply go against and correct something that I argue is inherent in humans. I discuss the inherent trait to commit crime, or simply the evil nature that can lead to crime that I think is inherent in people. Previous research indicated that there are 64 preferred leadership characteristics. These characteristics were derived from a review of the current literature on leadership, as well as focus groups and structured interviews. These characteristics can be grouped into 6 leadership styles: Imaginative, Constructive, Synergy, Principled, Virtuous, and Alpha Male. The current study aims to investigate how preference for these 6 leadership styles relates to political party affiliation.

Navigating Qualitative Assessments Of Chance: Quantifying Individual Perceptions Of Distinct Expressions, William G. Volante

Human Factors and Applied Psychology Student Conference

Often, humans must rely on their innate ability to describe the perceived chance of an event occurring using qualitative phrases, rather than quantitative values. These qualitative phrases often lead to a spectrum of meaning across individuals. Our aim in this study was two-fold; first, to distinguish a quantitative spectrum for these qualitative phrases, and second, to determine which of these phrases produced the largest variance between individuals. Personal differences were also looked at to determine if personality may play a role in these variations.

Social interaction theory: Social interaction theory provides an explanation of aggressive acts motivated by higher level goals. Hostile aggression may have some rational goal behind it. Social interaction theory provides understanding that aggression is often the result of threats to high self esteem (i.e. Smart condition eliminating quicker than dumb condition), (Anderson and Bushman, 2002).

Neuroticism: According to Big Five Inventory; individuals who are high in Neuroticism show the following traits: Anxiety, angry hostility, depression, self-consciousness, impulsiveness and lack of self confidence (John & Srivastava, 1999).
