Before pursuing an international career, members of the LGBTQIA+ community must be aware of the hardship that may be exacerbated by living and working abroad. This study addresses the trends in laws, including employment and anti-discrimination laws, that provide and restrict certain rights of members of the LGBTQIA+ community in eight countries. These nations, both progressive and discriminatory, include the United States, England, Switzerland, Germany, Taiwan, China, the Philippines and Kazakhstan. Eight LGBTQIA+ business professionals spoke on their experiences living and working in each of these countries and provided advice to members of the community wishing to pursue an international …

This work will explore and detail the methods of Chinese espionage used to steal information and technology from other countries using researchers, scientists, and academics. It will describe how this type of espionage is conducted, who is targeted, what types of information and technology are stolen, why this is the chosen method and the components of the successes and failures of this method of espionage. It will specifically focus on the Chinese Thousand Talents Program, recently officially identified by the United States as a form of Chinese espionage.

A Political Ecology Of Information: Media And The Dilemma Of State Power In China, Michael L. Miller

In this dissertation, I employ a Weberian concept of social power in order to theorize the challenges posed by, and the varieties of state response to, the dilemma of state power: the need of all states to empower societies with social capacities that may, in turn, threaten state interests. Through a comparison of traditional and new forms of media in China, I show that rather than posing qualitatively new types of challenges to authoritarian states, new media exacerbate the dilemma of state power. With GDP growth for the 2016 fiscal year reported at 6.7%, it appears that the Chinese economy has departed from the three-decade period in which GDP growth averaged plus-10%. While both academic journals and media outlets have accredited this slowdown to a variety of factors, existing research has failed to conflate the economic and political factors into a comprehensive explanation. Consequently, this thesis examines the causative factors behind the slowing of the Chinese economy though the analysis of three contesting plausibility probes centered on the impact of corruption, statism, and structural economic change. This paper addresses the exploitative relationship seen amongst core-periphery areas as described in world systems theory through analyzing relations between Argentina and China as well as other trade partners. Looking at trends in trade, including general commodity trade statistics and trade of primary versus non-primary products, this study aims to demonstrate the growing treatment of Argentina as a periphery in relation to China as a core in contrast to Argentina’s relatively fixed status with the rest of its trade partners. Recent years have seen an emerging civil society in an authoritarian China. The authoritarian embrace of civil society challenges the conventional wisdom that civil society is closely linked to democracy. In Beijing, the rhetoric of civil society linked less to democracy than to modernization. However, does civil society development have any impact on democratization in authoritarian regimes?
