Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

Progressive political theologies can expand and deepen both the strength and the conceptualization of human rights advocacy. However, not all political theologies are an effort to defend human dignity; neither are all understandings and practices of human rights. The validation of progressive political theologies as well as the validation of human rights conceptualizations comes from their capacity to concretely change the lived reality of poor and oppressed peoples of the world.

"The relationship between grime and politics has been an interesting and evolving one. Grime is a genre of music that emerged at the turn of the 21st century in London’s inner boroughs. Early on, its sound was most closely likened to US hip hop and rap. But those in the know appreciate grime’s deep connections to its UK predecessors, which include music from the British underground scene such as garage and jungle, in addition to Jamaican dancehall, electronic/experimental music, and British punk. This article explores whether student-centered discussion is an effective pedagogical method to create a sanctuary type of environment in racial justice courses. Although studies abound about race in university classrooms, none assess the impact of a cross-racial faculty team (Black and White) co-teaching a racial justice course that utilizes a student-centered discussion model. Thus, we build on critical race education scholarship’s insights to examine the impact of a student-centered discussion (SCD) model with a cross-racial faculty team co-teaching a racial justice course.
