OER From Vision to Action
Do you want to know how other universities develop their OER initiatives? This panel of five librarians will discuss their participation in the SPARC Open Education Leadership Program, a two-semester professional development experience aimed at building expertise and capacity to advance open education in academic libraries, and how it helped shape the development of OER initiatives at their institutions. Over two semesters, the program blends online, peer-to-peer, and project-based learning opportunities to develop participants into subject matter experts with the practical know-how to advance open education initiatives on their campuses.
The panelists will discuss how their participation in the SPARC …

Attitudinal, Normative, And Resource Factors Affecting Psychologists’ Intentions To Adopt An Open Data Badge: An Empirical Analysis, Lindsey M. Harper, Youngseek Kim
Librarian Research
The purpose of this research is to investigate the attitudinal, normative, and resource factors affecting psychologists’ adoption of an open data badge. The theory of planned behavior was employed to demonstrate how these factors influence behavioral intentions to adopt an open data badge. This research used a survey method to examine to what extent those attitudinal, normative, resource factors influence psychologists’ behavioral intentions to adopt an open data badge, and therefore engage in data sharing behaviors. A national survey (n = 341) across the field of psychology showed that perceived benefit and perceived risk had significant positive and negative relationships …

I am pleased to transmit the following statistics report on the UNL DigitalCommons, http://digitalcommons.unl.edu
The DigitalCommons is the “institutional repository” for UNL. It’s function is to gather the intellectual output of the university for online public access. It was established in 2005, and now holds 99,000 papers, making it the 3rd largest in the United States, trailing only the University of California system (190,000) and the University of Michigan (120,000). It recently surpassed 50 million downloads, and is the nation’s current leader in that category. Alexa.com reports that the repository …
Global South Scholars Are Missing From European And Us Journals. What Can Be Done About It, Peace A. Medie, Alice Kang
Global South Scholars Are Missing From European And Us Journals. What Can Be Done About It, Peace A. Medie, Alice Kang
Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications
Studies have shown that scholars in the global South are under represented in top international peer-reviewed social and medical sciences journals.
The global South refers to African, Asian, Latin American, and Middle Eastern countries who are also members of the Group of 77. The intergovernmental organisation of mainly developing countries is used to identify countries in the South. The global North includes the Group of 8 and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council. Our own analysis of gender and politics journals shows scholars in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East are missing from leading journals …

Successful scholarly communications outreach centers on a consistent, flexible, and holistic approach. We provide training and support throughout the lifecycle of scholarly communications. Our work has had a strong, positive impact at our college and our institutional repository is the centerpiece of our work.
The value of one-on-one is critical. We reach out to faculty when receiving a Google Scholar alert for new publications. Encouraging self-depositing allows us to train on using the IR and discuss author’s rights and using the SPARC Addendum. We have taken the approach that educating faculty is our ultimate goal.
Buy-in from administration has been …

Finding and evaluating existing open educational resources (OER) offer particular challenges to faculty and librarians. The OER discovery process is distributed across several repositories and search engines. OER searches tend to include a variety of different learning objects presented in a wide range of formats, which can be difficult to evaluate and compare.
This lightning talk will discuss the steps that Linn-Benton Community College took to improve the discovery process for open courses in its institutional repository. It will discuss the steps we took to include these courses in a popular OER search tool and facilitate the evaluation process by …

The Orbis Cascade Alliance’s move to standardize metadata across institutions will greatly enhance our ability to share digital collections across the Alliance and beyond. Perhaps no other fields, though, cause more consternation and confusion than the pair of rights statements required by the Alliance and the Digital Public Library of America.
This presentation will describe the work done by the Alliance's Dublin Core Best Practices Working Group to help member institutions assign standardized rights statements. Examples and explanations of why certain choices were made for both the url and free text statement will also be provided.
Implementing A Campus-Wide Oer Publishing Platform At Uc Berkeley, Maria Gould
Implementing A Campus-Wide Oer Publishing Platform At Uc Berkeley, Maria Gould
Northwest IR User Group
In April 2018, the UC Berkeley Library launched a campus-wide OER publishing platform to provide faculty, staff, and students with a simple and centralized portal for creating and finding OERs and other online works. Originating out of a multi-pronged approach to support and encourage course content affordability measures on campus, the publishing platform came about to address a specific need: while the Library had been incentivizing OER use through grants to faculty, we realized that we lacked an easy way to help people create them. In this presentation, I will share details and insights from our process so that other …

ResearchGate’s recent legal woes regarding publishing giants like Elsevier and American Chemical Society have caught the attention of academic authors, giving open access champions a unique opportunity to engage with University researchers and scientists. This session will describe a workshop for authors’ rights training that incorporates ResearchGate into discussions of copyright (including the use of SHERPA/RoMEO), licensing and copyright transfer negotiation. The workshop also entails a discussion of the perks of participating in both ResearchGate and non-commercial repositories by exploring how the services complement one another.
Attendees of this presentation will come away with ideas for designing their own authors’ …

What is the importance of institutional history and special collections in a digital environment? Should these pieces of history have their own digital platform or be merged with the institutional repository? What role do repositories play in the institutional environment? What impact do digital historical collections have on the stakeholder contingent as well as the global community? The speakers will discuss the rationale behind migrating collections from CONTENTdm to institutional repositories (all using bepress’s Digital Commons platform). Reasons range from subscription costs to file format concerns to increased search optimization. The migratory act will be covered in terms of method …

Understanding The Role Of Institutional Repository In Digital Preservation In Academic Libraries: A Review Of Literature, O. P. Saini
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
One of the leading objectives of the libraries is to provide the latest and timely information to its clientele and keep them updated with the new arrivals related to their subject areas. However, a limited storage capacity of libraries is throwing a challenge before librarians from the beginning of libraries. The latest developments in the libraries for information management, preservation, and dissemination involve a high rate of computer technologies. Institutional Repository (IR) is a new breed which has the potential to store any amount of information in little space and preserve it for a long-term perspective. Therefore, many of the …

The white paper on Business Models for Open Access proposes that there is no single ideal business model for Open Access that can be adopted as standard. It describes the current landscape in which there are multiple approaches to OA publishing, many of which are adopted by OPERAS members to suit their particular circumstances, although the APC and BPC models still predominate especially among commercial publishers. The paper describes the business models adopted by members both from the point of view of publishers, and of service providers such as Knowledge Unlatched, as well as looking at models emerging elsewhere such …
