Micah Vandegrift Keynote - Open To Change: Possibilities And Probabilities, Micah Vandegrift
Open Access Week
The grand challenges of our day are being met with grand visions for the future. An opportunity sits at the intersection of climate change, open science, and community engagement. This talk speaks to what is distinctive about that opportunity in 2022, especially in light of the fresh directions in U.S. research policy, and offers a case study in what that might look like. Mr. Vandegrift speaks from experience and his recent research, and provides attendees with a foundation and a forecast.

Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial (FOSS4G) Conference Proceedings
This paper reports on new opportunities for research and education in Free and Open Source Geoinformatics as a translational part of Open Science, enabled by a growing collection of OSGeo conference video recordings at the German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB). Since 2015, OSGeo conference recordings have been included to the collection sphere of TIB in information sciences. Currently, video content from selected national (FOSSGIS), regional (FOSS4G-NA) and global (FOSS4G) conferences is being actively collected. The annual growth exceeds 100 hours of new content relating to the OSGeo software projects and the OSGeo scientific-technical communities. This is seconded …

Fostering Change: Evaluating Digital Scholarship For Professional Credit, Seth Denbo
Open Access Week
As the field of digital humanities becomes an ever more important facet of both research and teaching, we need to find means for ensuring that the work is properly evaluated and that credit is given to the scholars who engage in it. The problems associated with developing this are complex, and new modes of research and publication have proven difficult to incorporate into disciplines that have traditionally put high value on print. Scholarly societies have an important role to play in encouraging creative thought and action about how best to accommodate these new modes within our disciplines.

Multilingual Researchers And Reference Management Habits, Adam H. Lisbon
Multilingual Researchers And Reference Management Habits, Adam H. Lisbon
ACRL New England Chapter Annual Conference
Software is often developed with an implicit bias that people only speak one language, and that language should be English. Reference management software is no different. Scholars often have sources of information in multiple languages, and properly citing them creates a set of additional rules to remember and challenges for software to overcome to properly document the nature of the source materials. Different scholarly journals may have different expectations for how to format non-English sources. The demands can also vary based on the actual language of the source.
The use of reference management software is well documented, but the nature …

Collaborators And Partners: Librarians And Digital Scholarship, Jennifer Snow, Marisol Ramos
ACRL New England Chapter Annual Conference
Digital Scholarship is an important and growing field in which librarians embed themselves in scholarly projects, not just as providers of a service but as partners and collaborators throughout the life-cycle of research. Instead of acting as consultants on the periphery of the research process, librarians can be involved at every stage of the process. They bring valuable skills to the table in terms of technological expertise, subject and research knowledge, preservation considerations, and dissemination pathways. The University of Connecticut Library has consciously sought to grow its digital scholarship program and has undertaken several projects in the last couple of …

Systematically Populating An Ir With Etds: Launching A Retrospective Digitization Project And Collecting Current Etds At The University Of Massachusetts Amherst, Meghan Banach Bergin, Charlotte Roh
Meghan Banach Bergin
The University of Massachusetts Amherst Libraries established their institutional repository (IR), ScholarWorks@UMass Amherst, in 2006, and we began by systematically populating it with electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs). We currently have a little over 4,500 dissertations and theses in our IR, and they are some of the\ most highly used content in our repository. Through a partnership with the Graduate School, we collect and disseminate all of our current master’s theses and doctoral dissertations through ScholarWorks. We recently launched an ambitious project to scan all 24,000 of our print dissertations and theses and upload them to our IR. In this …

E-Resource Acquisitions In Academic Library Consortia, Christine N. Turner

Scholarly publishing is the information marketplace in which academic libraries function, and major shifts in traditional publishing and pricing models are in process. Library consortia have long been viewed as a means of increasing purchasing power and reducing costs. In late 2010, the Five College Libraries (FCL) hired R2 Consulting, LLC to investigate and make recommendations regarding how the Libraries cooperate more closely on the acquisition, management, and delivery of electronic resources. This study examines and evaluates how other academic library consortia are licensing and acquiring electronic books, databases, journals and streaming media. The organizations, activities, processes, history and trends …

Sabbatical Report: Summary Of Survey Results On Digital Preservation Practices At 148 Institutions, Meghan Banach Bergin
Sabbatical Report: Summary Of Survey Results On Digital Preservation Practices At 148 Institutions, Meghan Banach Bergin
Meghan Banach Bergin
The purpose of my sabbatical project was to identify institutions with established digital preservation programs, and investigate how these programs were implemented. To accomplish this task, I conducted a web-based survey that looked into what systems were being used for digital preservation, what services were offered to the campus or user community, staffing and organizational models to support digital preservation programs, as well as the costs associated with these various digital preservation programs. I received a total of 148 responses to the survey. Of the 148 responses, 100 respondents finished the survey. To follow up from the survey, I conducted …
